Title: Solvent-induced selectivity of Williamson etherification in the pursuit of amides resistant against oxidative degradation
This article reports two discoveries. (1) 2-Methoxyethanol induces unprecedented selectivity for etherification of 5-hydroxy-2-nitrobenzic acids without forming undesired esters. (2) Such compounds are precursors for amides showing unusual robustness against oxidative degradation, essential for molecular electrets that transfer strongly oxidizing holes at about −6.4 eV vs. vacuum.  more » « less

  2. In Lake Erie, toxin-forming harmful algal blooms (HABs) occur following high concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ). Correlation between H 2 O 2 concentrations and HABs revealed knowledge gaps on the controls of H 2 O 2 production in Lake Erie. One way H 2 O 2 is produced is upon absorption of sunlight by the chromophoric fraction of dissolved organic matter (CDOM). Rates of this photochemical production of H 2 O 2 may increase in proportion to the apparent quantum yield of H 2 O 2 ( Φ H 2 O 2 ,λ ) from CDOM. However, the Φ H 2 O 2 ,λ for H 2 O 2 production from CDOM remains too poorly constrained to predict the magnitude and range of photochemically produced H 2 O 2 , particularly in freshwaters like Lake Erie. To address this knowledge gap, the Φ H 2 O 2 ,λ was measured approximately biweekly from June–September 2019 in the western basin of Lake Erie along with supporting analyses ( e.g. , CDOM concentration and composition). The average Φ H 2 O 2 ,λ in Lake Erie was within previously reported ranges. However, the Φ H 2 O 2 ,λ varied 5-fold in space and time. The highest Φ H 2 O 2 ,λ was observed in the Maumee River, a tributary of Lake Erie. In nearshore waters of Lake Erie, the Φ H 2 O 2 ,λ decreased about five-fold from June through September. Integration of the controls of photochemical production of H 2 O 2 in Lake Erie show that the variability in rates of photochemical H 2 O 2 production was predominantly due to the Φ H 2 O 2 ,λ . In offshore waters, CDOM concentration also strongly influenced photochemical H 2 O 2 production. Together, the results confirm prior work suggesting that photochemical production of H 2 O 2 contributes but likely cannot account for all the H 2 O 2 associated with HABs in Lake Erie.

  3. Reactions of the bicompartmental bis(phenolato) compound 6,6′-methylenebis(2-((bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amino)methyl)-4-chlorophenol)hemihydrate (H 2 L ½H 2 O) with 3d metal( ii ) ions afforded novel fully structurally characterized bridged acetato dinuclear complexes [Mn 2 (HL)(μ 1,2 -OAc) 2 ]PF 6 (1) [Zn 2 (HL)(μ 1,2 -OAc)(H 2 O) 0.75 (MeOH) 0.25 ](PF 6 ) 2 ·0.45(H 2 O) (5) and [Cd 2 (HL)(μ 1,1,2 -OAc)(OAc)(H 2 O)]PF 6 ·H 2 O (6) as well as the polymeric bridged-azido tetranuclear catena -[Cu 4 (HL) 2 (μ 1,1 -N 3 ) 2 (μ 1,3 -N 3 ) 2 ](NO 3 ) 2 ·5H 2 O (4). The complex [Cu 4 (HL) 2 (ClO 4 ) 3 (H 2 O) 5 ](ClO 4 ) 3 ·5H 2 O (2) was partially characterized. In addition, three more dinuclear complexes [Cu 2 (H 2 L)(NO 3 ) 2 (H 2 O) 2 ](NO 3 ) 2 (3), [Cu 2 (HL)(OAc)(CH 3 OH)](PF 6 ) 2 (7) and [Cu 2 (HL)(NCS) 2 ]NO 3 ·2H 2 O (8) were also isolated. All complexes were characterized by CHN elemental analysis, IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy, ESI-MS, conductivity measurements and X-ray single crystal crystallography for compounds 1, 4, 5 and 6, where the bis(phenolato) ligand displayed different deprotonation (H 2 L, HL − and L 2− ). The magnetic susceptibility measurements over the temperature range 2–300 K revealed very weak antiferromagnetic coupling in dimanganese( ii ) 1 ( J = −1.64(1) cm −1 ) and almost negligible magnetic interaction in dicopper( ii ) 2 ( J = 0(3) cm −1 ). In the azido catena -[Cu 4 (HL) 2 (μ 1,1 -N 3 ) 2 (μ 1,3 -N 3 ) 2 ](NO 3 ) 2 ·5H 2 O (4) complex, the J value of −133(3) cm −1 was obtained upon moderate-to-strong antiferromagnetic coupling through the di-μ 1,3 -N 3 -bridged dicopper( ii ) unit with no magnetic interaction between the two copper( ii ) ions in the di-μ 1,1 -N 3 -bridged unit.

  4. Abstract

We recently reported a detailed investigation of the collision‐induced dissociation (CID) of [UO2(NO3)3]and [UO2(NO3)2(O2)]in a linear ion trap mass spectrometer (J. Mass Spectrom. DOI:10.1002/jms.4705). Here, we describe the CID of [UO2(NO3)(O2)]which is created directly by ESI, or indirectly by simple elimination of O2from [UO2(NO3)(O2)2]. CID of [UO2(NO3)(O2)]creates product ions as atm/z332 andm/z318. The former may be formed directly by elimination of O2, while the latter required decomposition of a nitrate ligand and elimination of NO2. DFT calculations identify a pathway by which both product ions can be generated, which involves initial isomerization of [UO2(NO3)(O2)]to create [UO2(O)(NO2)(O2)], from which elimination of NO2or O2will leave [UO2(O)(O2)]or [UO2(O)(NO2)], respectively. For the latter product ion, the composition assignment of [UO2(O)(NO2)]rather than [UO2(NO3)]is supported by ion‐molecule reaction behavior, and in particular, the fact that spontaneous addition of O2, which is predicted to be the dominant reaction pathway for [UO2(NO3)]is not observed. Instead, the species reacts with H2O, which is predicted to be the favored pathway for [UO2(O)(NO2)]. This result in particular demonstrates the utility of ion‐molecule reactions to assist the determination of ion composition. As in our earlier study, we find that ions such as [UO2(O)(NO2)]and [UO2(O)(O2)]form H2O adducts, and calculations suggest these species spontaneously rearrange to create dihydroxides.

    The water reactivity of the boroauride complex ([Au(B 2 P 2 )][K(18-c-6)]; (B 2 P 2 , 9,10-bis(2-(diisopropylphosphino)-phenyl)-9,10-dihydroboranthrene) and its corresponding two-electron oxidized complex, Au(B 2 P 2 )Cl, are presented. Au(B 2 P 2 )Cl is tolerant to H 2 O and forms the hydroxide complex Au(B 2 P 2 )OH in the presence of H 2 O and triethylamine. [Au(B 2 P 2 )]Cl and [Au(B 2 P 2 )]OH are poor Lewis acids as judged by the Gutmann–Becket method, with [Au(B 2 P 2 )]OH displaying facile hydroxide exchange between B atoms of the DBA ring as evidenced by variable temperature NMR spectroscopy. The reduced boroauride complex [Au(B 2 P 2 )] − reacts with 1 equivalent of H 2 O to produce a hydride/hydroxide product, [Au(B 2 P 2 )(H)(OH)] − , that rapidly evolves H 2 upon further H 2 O reaction to yield the dihydroxide compound, [Au(B 2 P 2 )(OH) 2 ] − . [Au(B 2 P 2 )]Cl can be regenerated from [Au(B 2 P 2 )(OH) 2 ] − via HCl·Et 2 O, providing a synthetic cycle for H 2 evolution from H 2 O enabled by O–H oxidative addition at a diboraanthracene unit.
