Cybersecurity threats continue to increase and are impacting almost all aspects of modern life. Being aware of how vulnerabilities and their exploits are changing gives helpful insights into combating new threats. Applying dynamic topic modeling to a time-stamped cybersecurity document collection shows how the significance and details of concepts found in them are evolving. We correlate two different temporal corpora, one with reports about specific exploits and the other with research-oriented papers on cybersecurity vulnerabilities and threats. We represent the documents, concepts, and dynamic topic modeling data in a semantic knowledge graph to support integration, inference, and discovery. A critical insight into discovering knowledge through topic modeling is seeding the knowledge graph with domain concepts to guide the modeling process. We use Wikipedia concepts to provide a basis for performing concept phrase extraction and show how using those phrases improves the quality of the topic models. Researchers can query the resulting knowledge graph to reveal important relations and trends. This work is novel because it uses topics as a bridge to relate documents across corpora over time.

            Bias and polarization are not just about placing misinformation on the Web but also involve concerted efforts to change how we navigate it. One of the strongest points of Wikipedia is to allows readers to easily navigate a topic, through its hyperlinks structure. Thus, it is crucial to ensure a user to have the same probability of being exposed to knowledge that expresses different viewpoints concerning the given topic. In this work, we investigate whether the topology and polarization of a topic-induced-graph (e.g. U.S. Politics induced network) has an impact on users' navigation paths making them biased toward one of the possible topic perspectives. Modeling users behaviour and exploiting Wikipedia clickstreams, we analyze users exposure to different leaning during their sessions, thus the chance of being trapped within a knowledge bubble presenting a unique viewpoint about the topic, and differences among users that start their navigation from articles representing different perspectives.

            Navigation assistive technologies have been designed to support individuals with visual impairments during independent mobility by providing sensory augmentation and contextual awareness of their surroundings. Such information is habitually provided through predefned audio-haptic interaction paradigms. However, individual capabilities, preferences and behavior of people with visual impairments are heterogeneous, and may change due to experience, context and necessity. Therefore, the circumstances and modalities for providing navigation assistance need to be personalized to different users, and through time for each user. We conduct a study with 13 blind participants to explore how the desirability of messages provided during assisted navigation varies based on users' navigation preferences and expertise. The participants are guided through two different routes, one without prior knowledge and one previously studied and traversed. The guidance is provided through turn-by-turn instructions, enriched with contextual information about the environment. During navigation and follow-up interviews, we uncover that participants have diversifed needs for navigation instructions based on their abilities and preferences. Our study motivates the design of future navigation systems capable of verbosity level personalization in order to keep the users engaged in the current situational context while minimizing distractions.more » « less

            With the increasing use of virtual simulated environments and immersive technologies in STEM education and workforce training, it is becoming increasingly important to study and understand how learners’ interactions and navigation in virtual environments affect their learning and skill development. In this paper, we quantify and assess the effect of learners’ navigation in an immersive simulated environment on learning outcomes, where navigation is characterized by the total time spent in the simulation and time allocations to different areas within the virtual environment. We implement a set of immersive simulation-based learning (ISBL) modules in an undergraduate computer science course with eighteen students and record their screen as they navigate in the simulation environment to perform the tasks needed to complete the ISBL assignments. We use a video analytics tool to process and analyze the videos and collect statistics related to a set of navigation-related measures for each student. We also use surveys to collect data on students’ demographics, prior knowledge and experience, personality, experiential learning, and self-assessment of learning. We then perform a set of multivariable regression analyses to characterize and explain the relationship between navigation measures and constructs assessed via survey instruments to determine how/if users’ navigation in the simulated environment can be a predictor of their learning outcomes. The results indicate that the total time spent in the simulation and the distribution of time allocations among different areas within the simulated environment are predictors of experiential learning and students’ self-assessment of learning.more » « less

            Communicating about some vital topics---such as sexuality and health---is treated as taboo and subjected to censorship. How can we construct knowledge about these topics? Wikipedia is home to numerous high-quality knowledge artifacts about taboo topics like sexual organs and human reproduction. How did these artifacts come into being? How is their existence sustained? This mixed-methods comparative project builds on previous work on taboo topics in Wikipedia and draws from qualitative and quantitative approaches. We follow a sequential complementary design, developing a narrative articulation of the life of taboo articles, comparing them to nontaboo articles, and examining some of their quantifiable traits. We find that taboo knowledge artifacts develop through multiple successful collaboration styles and, unsurprisingly, that taboo subjects are the sites of conflict. We identify and describe six themes in the development of taboo knowledge artifacts. These artifacts needresilient leadershipandengaged organizationsto thrive under conditions oflimited identifiabilityanddisjointed sensemaking, while contributors simultaneously engage inemergent governanceandimagining public audiences. Our observations have important implications for supporting public knowledge work on controversial subjects such as taboos and more generally.more » « less

            Dataset discovery can be performed using search (with a query or keywords) to find relevant data. However, the result of this discovery can be overwhelming to explore. Existing navigation techniques mostly focus on linkage graphs that enable navigation from one data set to another based on similarity or joinability of attributes. However, users often do not know which data set to start the navigation from. RONIN proposes an alternative way to navigate by building a hierarchical structure on a collection of data sets: the user navigates between groups of data sets in a hierarchical manner to narrow down to the data of interest. We demonstrate RONIN, a tool that enables user exploration of a data lake by seamlessly integrating the two common modalities of discovery: data set search and navigation of a hierarchical structure. In RONIN, a user can perform a keyword search or joinability search over a data lake, then, navigate the result using a hierarchical structure, called an organization , that is created on the fly. While navigating an organization, the user may switch to the search mode, and back to navigation on an organization that is updated based on search. This integration of search and navigation provides great power in allowing users to find and explore interesting data in a data lake.more » « less
