{"Abstract":["This dataset uses trajectory data from a large set of drifters to extract and analyze displacement signals associated with coherent eddies in the Gulf of Mexico, using a multivariate wavelet ridge analysis as presented in Lilly and Pérez-Brunius (2021). The data includes eddy displacement signals for all ridges, as well as the time-varying ellipse parameters and estimated ellipse center location. The instantaneous frequency is also included, as is the instantaneous bias estimate derived by Lilly and Olhede (2012). The data are organized as appended trajectory data that can be readily separated through the use of the "ids" field. The ridge length (\\(L\\)),and ridge-averaged circularity (\\(\\overline{\\xi}\\)) are also included, as is measure of statistical significance denoted by (\\(\\rho\\)). New Species of Malleastrum (Meliaceae) from Madagascar
Three new species of Malleastrum (Baill.) J.-F. Leroy are described from Madagascar and compared to the most similar of the 22 other accepted species in the genus. Malleastrum acuminatum V. Pérez & J. S. Mill., M. longifoliolatum V. Pérez & J. S. Mill., and M. obovatum V. Pérez & J. S. Mill. are described, differences from the most similar species are presented, and their conservation status is discussed.

Three previously described species, U. tuxcacuensis (Pinedo-Escatel & Aguilar-Pérez, 2019) comb. nov., U. youajla (Pinedo-Escatel, 2019) comb. nov., and U. xajxayakamej (Pinedo-Escatel, 2019) comb. nov. are transferred to Usanus. Two new species, U. xochipalensis sp. nov. and U. igualaensis sp. nov. from Guerrero, are described and illustrated. An updated key to all known species of Usanus is provided.more » « less

Ceratozamia (Zamiaceae, Cycadales), is a member one of the most endangered seed plant groups. Species of Ceratozamia grow from near sea level up to 2,100 meters in Mexico and Mesoamerica. We present a modern taxonomic treatment of Ceratozamia , based on fieldwork combined with detailed study of herbarium specimens in and from Mexico and Central America. This new revision is based on incorporation of morphological, molecular and biogeographic data that have been previously published in circumscriptions of species complexes by our group. Detailed morphological descriptions of the 36 species of Ceratozamia are provided and relevant characters for the genus are discussed and described. A majority are endemic to Mexico and are concentrated at high elevations in mountainous areas. Synonymies, lectotypifications, etymologies, taxonomic notes, distribution maps, illustrations and detailed species-level comparisons are included, as well as a dichotomous key for identification of all species. Data on distributional ranges and habitats of all species are summarized. Ceratozamia osbornei D.W.Stev., Mart.-Domínguez & Nic.-Mor., sp. nov. is described from evergreen tropical forests of Belize and we highlight new populations and distributional ranges for C. subroseophylla Mart.-Domínguez & Nic.-Mor. and C. vovidesii Pérez-Farr. & Iglesias in the Mesoamerican region.more » « less

This chapter provides an overview of the procedures and methods employed for coring operations and in the shipboard laboratories of the R/V JOIDES Resolution during International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 397. The laboratory information applies only to shipboard work described in the Expedition Report section of the Expedition 397 Proceedings of the International Ocean Discovery Program volume that includes the shipboard sample registry, imaging and analytical instruments, core description tools, and the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) database. The shipboard workflow followed standard IODP procedures (as previously described by, e.g., Huber et al., 2019; Winckler et al., 2021; Planke et al., 2023), with revisions and refinements as described in this chapter. Methods used by investigators for shore-based analyses of Expedition 397 data will be documented in separate publications. Abstract The atmospheric electric field is an important research parameter in understanding storm electrification and energy exchange between lightning and the atmosphere across the globe. The near‐surface electric field can range from a few V/m (order of 10–100 V/m), mainly produced by the currents in the global electric circuit and local charge perturbations, to tens of kV/m in the presence of electrified clouds. The electric field mill (EFM), a variable capacitance electrometer, has been the instrument of choice in the atmospheric electricity community studying phenomena associated with the atmospheric electric field. The EFM is particularly useful in following storm movement and evolution, monitoring the fair‐weather electric field at distant locations, and measuring the vertical electric field inside clouds with EFM deployments on balloons. In this paper, we describe a new electric field mill ground‐based design, which focuses on lowering the manufacturing and operational costs of doing research with an array of EFM instruments while maintaining the scientific capabilities offered by past designs and commercially available devices. The theory of operation, data processing, and calibration of the instrument are also described. Example data from the first generation of these new field mills, deployed in the RELAMPAGO campaign in Argentina, are presented here. The RELAMPAGO deployment and data set illustrate important strengths of this design, for example, cost, autonomy, longevity, and measurement quality.more » « less
