Title: A sandwich-type cluster containing Ge@Pd3 planar fragment flanked by aromatic nonagermanide caps
Abstract Sandwich-type clusters with the planar fragment containing a heterometallic sheet have remained elusive. In this work, we introduce the [K(2,2,2-crypt)] 4 {(Ge 9 ) 2 [ η 6 -Ge(PdPPh 3 ) 3 ]} complex that contains a heterometallic sandwich fragment. The title compound is structurally characterized by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction, which reveals the presence of an unusual heteroatomic metal planar fragment Ge@Pd 3 . The planar fragment contains a rare formal zerovalent germanium core and a peculiar bonding mode of sp 2 -Ge@(PdPPh 3 ) 3 trigonal planar structure, whereas the nonagermanide fragments act as capping ligands. The chemical bonding pattern of the planar fragment consists of three 2c-2e Pd-Ge σ-bonds attaching Pd atoms to the core Ge atom, while the binding between the planar fragment and the aromatic Ge 9 ligands is provided by six 2c-2e Pd-Ge σ-bonds and two delocalized 4c-2e σ-bonds. The synthesized cluster represents a rare example of a sandwich compound with the heteroatomic metal planar fragment and inorganic aromatic capping ligands.  more » « less

  1. We report a new design of polymer phenylacetylene (PA) ligands and the ligand exchange methodology for colloidal noble metal nanoparticles (NPs). PA-terminated poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) can bind to metal NPs through acetylide (M-CC-R) that affords a high grafting density. The ligand−metal interaction can be switched between σ bonding and extended π backbonding by changing grafting conditions. The σ bonding of PEG−PA with NPs is strong and it can compete with other capping ligands including thiols, while the π backbonding is much weaker. The σ bonding is also demonstrated to improve the catalytic performance of Pd for ethanol oxidation and prevent surface absorption of the reaction intermediates. Those unique binding characteristics will enrich the toolbox in the control of colloidal surface chemistry and their applications using polymer ligands.

  2. Nonagermanide clusters are widely used in inorganic synthesis and are actively studied by experimentalists and theoreticians. However, chemical bonding of such versatile species is still not completely understood. In our work we deciphered a bonding pattern for various experimentally obtained nonagermanide species. We localized the electron density via the AdNDP algorithm for the model structures ([Ge 9 ] 4− , [Ge 9 {P(NH 2 ) 2 } 3 ] − , Cu[Ge 9 {P(NH 2 ) 2 } 3 ] and Cu(NHC)[Ge 9 {P(NH 2 ) 2 } 3 ]) and obtained a simple and chemically intuitive bonding pattern which can explain the variety of active sites and the existence of both D 3h and C 4v geometries for such clusters. Moreover, the [Ge 9 ] 4− core is found to be a unique example of an inorganic Zintl cluster with multiple local σ-aromaticity.

  3. Abstract

A unique thorium‐thorium bond was observed in the crystalline tri‐thorium cluster [{Th(η8‐C8H8)(μ3‐Cl)2}3{K(THF)2}2], though the claim of σ‐aromaticity for Th3bond has been questioned. Herein, a new type of core–shell syngenetic bonding model is proposed to describe the stability of this tri‐thorium cluster. The model involves a 3c–2e bond in the Th3core and a multicentered (ThCl2)3charge‐shift bond with 12 electrons scattering along the outer shell. To differentiate the strengths of the 3c–2e bond and the charge‐shift bond, the block‐localized wavefunction (BLW) method which falls into the ab initio valence bond (VB) theory is employed to construct a strictly core/shell localized state and its contributing covalent resonance structure for the Th3core bond. By comparing with the σ‐aromatic H3+and nonaromatic Li3+, the computed resonance energies and extra cyclic resonance energies confirm that this Th3core bond is truly delocalized and σ‐aromatic.

  5. The title three-dimensional metal–organic framework (MOF) compound, {(NH 4 ) 2 [Zn 2 (C 9 H 3 O 6 ) 2 ]·2C 5 H 9 NO} n , features an anionic framework constructed from Zn 2+ cations and benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (BTC) organic anions. Charge balance is achieved by outer sphere ammonium cations formed by degradation of di- n -butylamine in the solvothermal synthesis of the compound. Binuclear {Zn 2 (COO) 2 } entities act as the framework's secondary building units. Each Zn II atom has a tetrahedral coordination environment with an O 4 set of donor atoms. The three-dimensional framework adopts a rutile-type topology and channels are filled in an alternating fashion with ordered and disordered 1-methylpyrrolidin-2-one solvent molecules and ammonium cations. The latter are held in the channels via four N—H...O hydrogen bonds, including three with the benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate ligands of the anionic framework and one with a 1-methylpyrrolidin-2-one solvent molecule.
