Title: Minimizing Pilot Overhead in Cell-Free Massive MIMO Systems via Joint Estimation and Detection
We propose a joint channel estimation and data detection (JED) algorithm for cell-free massive multi-user (MU) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Our algorithm yields improved reliability and reduced latency while minimizing the pilot overhead of coherent uplink transmission. The proposed JED method builds upon a novel non-convex optimization problem that we solve approximately and efficiently using forward- backward splitting. We use simulation results to demonstrate that our algorithm achieves robust data transmission with more than 3x reduced pilot overhead compared to orthogonal training in a 128 antenna cell-free massive MU-MIMO system in which 128 users transmit data over 128 time slots.  more » « less

  1. Millimeter-wave (mmWave) cell-free massive multiuser (MU) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems combine the large bandwidths available at mmWave frequencies with the improved coverage of cell-free systems. However, to combat the high path loss at mmWave frequencies, user equipments (UEs) must form beams in meaningful directions, i.e., to a nearby access point (AP). At the same time, multiple UEs should avoid transmitting to the same AP to reduce MU interference. We propose an interference-aware method for beam alignment (BA) in the cell-free mmWave massive MU-MIMO uplink. In the considered scenario, the APs perform full digital receive beamforming while the UEs perform analog transmit beamforming. We evaluate our method using realistic mmWave channels from a commercial ray-tracer, showing the superiority of the proposed method over omnidirectional transmission as well as over methods that do not take MU interference into account.

  2. Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) enjoys great advantage in 5G wireless communication systems owing to its spectrum and energy efficiency. However, hundreds of antennas require large volumes of pilot overhead to guarantee reliable channel estimation in FDD massive MIMO system. Compressive sensing (CS) has been applied for channel estimation by exploiting the inherent sparse structure of massive MIMO channel but suffer from high complexity. To overcome this challenge, this paper develops a hybrid channel estimation scheme by integrating the model-driven CS and data-driven deep unrolling technique. The proposed scheme consists of a coarse estimation part and a fine correction part to respectively exploit the inter- and intraframe sparsities of channels to greatly reduce the pilot overhead. Theoretical result is provided to indicate the convergence of the fine correction and coarse estimation net. Simulation results are provided to verify that our scheme can estimate MIMO channels with low pilot overhead while guaranteeing estimation accuracy with relatively low complexity.

  3. Wireless systems must be resilient to jamming attacks. Existing mitigation methods require knowledge of the jammer’s transmit characteristics. However, this knowledge may be difficult to acquire, especially for smart jammers that attack only specific instants during transmission in order to evade mitigation. We propose a novel method that mitigates attacks by smart jammers on massive multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) basestations (BSs). Our approach builds on recent progress in joint channel estimation and data detection (JED) and exploits the fact that a jammer cannot change its subspace within a coherence interval. Our method, called MAED (short for MitigAtion, Estimation, and Detection), uses a novel problem formulation that combines jammer estimation and mitigation, channel estimation, and data detection, instead of separating these tasks. We solve the problem approximately with an efficient iterative algorithm. Our simulation results show that MAED effectively mitigates a wide range of smart jamming attacks without having any a priori knowledge about the attack type.

  4. In this paper, we consider channel estimation problem in the uplink of filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) systems. We propose a pilot structure and a joint multiuser channel estimation method for FBMC. Opposed to the available solutions in the literature, our proposed technique does not rely on the flat-channel condition over each subcarrier band or any requirement for placing guard symbols between different users’ pilots. Our proposed pilot structure reduces the training overhead by interleaving the users’ pilots in time and frequency. Thus, we can accommodate a larger number of training signals within the same bandwidth and improve the spectral efficiency. Furthermore, this pilot structure inherently leads to a reduced peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) compared with the solutions that use all the subcarriers for training. We analytically derive the Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB) and mean square error (MSE) expressions for our proposed method. We show that these expressions are the same. This confirms the optimality of our proposed method, which is numerically evaluated through simulations. Relying on its improved spectral efficiency, our proposed method can serve a large number of users and relax pilot contamination problem in FBMC-based massive MIMO systems. This is corroborated through simulations in terms of sum-rate performance for both single cell and multicell scenarios.

  5. Wireless systems must be resilient to jamming attacks. Existing mitigation methods based on multi-antenna processing require knowledge of the jammer's transmit characteristics that may be difficult to acquire, especially for smart jammers that evade mitigation by transmitting only at specific instants. We propose a novel method to mitigate smart jamming attacks on the massive multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) uplink which does not require the jammer to be active at any specific instant. By formulating an optimization problem that unifies jammer estimation and mitigation, channel estimation, and data detection, we exploit that a jammer cannot change its subspace within a coherence interval. Theoretical results for our problem formulation show that its solution is guaranteed to recover the users' data symbols under certain conditions. We develop two efficient iterative algorithms for approximately solving the proposed problem formulation: MAED, a parameter-free algorithm which uses forward-backward splitting with a box symbol prior, and SO-MAED, which replaces the prior of MAED with soft-output symbol estimates that exploit the discrete transmit constellation and which uses deep unfolding to optimize algorithm parameters. We use simulations to demonstrate that the proposed algorithms effectively mitigate a wide range of smart jammers without a priori knowledge about the attack type.
