Title: Crystallographic and Theoretical Evidences of Anion⋅⋅⋅Anion Interaction
Abstract Planar (HgCl3)anions are stacked fairly closely together in a slipped parallel arrangement within several crystal structures. Quantum chemical analysis shows evidence of strong noncovalent spodium bonds between the Hgπ‐hole of one unit and the Cl atom of an adjacent unit. Anion⋅⋅⋅anion spodium bonds work in tandem with crystal packing forces.  more » « less

  1. Abstract 3‐Hydroxypiperidinium pentaiodide was synthesized by a facile reaction in concentrated aqueous HI. Its crystal structure comprises 3‐hydroxypiperidinium cations and pentaiodide anions, the latter having geometry ofcis‐shaped chains composed of I2and I3building units. The analysis of interatomic distances, Raman spectroscopy data, and results of DFT calculations, including non‐covalent interaction analysis, showed that the title compound exhibits a complex pattern of covalent and non‐covalent interactions. Those include I−I covalent bonds and I⋅⋅⋅I halogen bonds within the I5anion as well as (N)H⋅⋅⋅I and (O)H⋅⋅⋅I hydrogen bonds and even weaker (C)H⋅⋅⋅I van‐der‐Waals interactions between the cations and anions.

  2. Abstract The 9‐borataphenanthrene anion is easily accessed by deprotonation of a 9,10‐dihydro‐9‐boraphenanthrene and its diverse reactivity is investigated. Alkylation occurs at the carbon atom adjacent to boron, and room temperature hydroboration occurs across the B=C bond. The π‐manifold of the central BC5ring coordinates to chromium in an η6fashion while only the B=C unit binds η2to gold, indicating versatility of the 9‐borataphenanthrene anion as a ligand. Supporting calculations rationalize the reactivity and aromaticity is corroborated by nucleus‐independent chemical shift (NICS) indices.

  3. Abstract We describe two novel hybrid receptors combining a phosphorus‐/nitrogen‐containing (PN) phosphonamidate heterocycle with urea recognition units in an arylethynyl backbone. Structural, spectroscopic and computational studies reveal that the origin of superior binding for hydrogen sulfate (HSO4) anion is correlated with the formation of strong hetero‐complementary hydrogen bonds with the phosphonamidate motif. We further demonstrate that the hybrid host system is capable of capturing/transporting the HSO4anion from an aqueous, biphasic system.

  4. Abstract Charge‐separated metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are a unique class of MOFs that can possess added properties originating from the exposed ionic species. A new charge‐separated MOF, namely, UNM‐6 synthesized from a tetrahedral borate ligand and Co2+cation is reported herein. UNM‐6 crystalizes into the highly symmetricP43nspace group with fourfold interpenetration, despite the stoichiometric imbalance between the B and Co atoms, which also leads to loosely bound NO3anions within the crystal structure. These NO3ions can be quantitatively exchanged with various other anions, leading to Lewis acid (Co2+) and Lewis base (anions) pairs within the pores and potentially cooperative catalytic activities. For example, UNM‐6‐Br, the MOF after anion exchange with Branions, displays high catalytic activity and stability in reactions of CO2chemical fixation into cyclic carbonates.

  5. The asymmetric unit in the title salt, (C8H20N)2[SnCl4(C7H4Cl2F3)2], features a di-isobutylammonium cation in a general position and a diorganotin tetrachloride dianion,i.e. tetrachloridobis(3-trifuoromethylphenyl)stannate(IV), located on a centre of inversion; the SnIVatom is octahedrally coordinated. In the crystal, charge-assisted N+—H...Cl hydrogen bonds along with C—H...F contacts occur within supramolecular layers that interdigitate along thea-axis direction.
