As Virtual Reality (VR) gains traction in education, its potential to support neurodivergent learners in cybersecurity training remains underexplored. This emerging technology report examines how VR can bridge the gap between STEM education and cybersecurity training for neurodivergent individuals, highlighting both its promise and the challenges that must be addressed. While VR-based cybersecurity simulations offer immersive, hands-on learning experiences that align with neurodivergent strengths, existing implementations often overlook critical accessibility considerations. This emerging technology report reviews current VR-based cybersecurity training systems, and provides insights and limitations in how they are supporting neurodivergent users. This report also addresses key challenges in this area of research such as cybersickness, the lack of neurodivergent representation in VR development, and the difficulty in creating realistic cybersecurity simulations. Given the rapid evolution of VR in cybersecurity education, ensuring accessibility requires intentional design choices and co-development with neurodivergent learners. We conclude by identifying research gaps and advocating for a more inclusive approach to VR-based cybersecurity education that fosters diversity within the field.

A Review on Virtual Reality Skill Training Applications
This study aimed to discuss the research efforts in developing virtual reality (VR) technology for different training applications. To begin with, we describe how VR training experiences are typically created and delivered using the current software and hardware. We then discuss the challenges and solutions of applying VR training to different application domains, such as first responder training, medical training, military training, workforce training, and education. Furthermore, we discuss the common assessment tests and evaluation methods used to validate VR training effectiveness. We conclude the article by discussing possible future directions to leverage VR technology advances for developing novel training experiences.

This study investigates how individual predispositions toward Virtual Reality (VR) affect user experiences in collaborative VR environments, particularly in workplace settings. By adapting the Video Game Pursuit Scale to measure VR predisposition, we aim to establish the reliability and validity of this adapted measure in assessing how personal characteristics influence engagement and interaction in VR. Two studies, the first correlational and the second quasi-experimental, were conducted to examine the impact of environmental features, specifically the differences between static and mobile VR platforms, on participants’ perceptions of time, presence, and task motivation. The findings indicate that individual differences in VR predisposition significantly influence user experiences in virtual environments with important implications for enhancing VR applications in training and team collaboration. This research contributes to the understanding of human–computer interaction in VR and offers valuable insights for organizations aiming to implement VR technologies effectively. The results highlight the importance of considering psychological factors in the design and deployment of VR systems, paving the way for future research in this rapidly evolving field.more » « less

null (Ed.)As coastal communities around the globe contend with the impacts of climate change including coastal hazards such as sea level rise and more frequent coastal storms, educating stakeholders and the general public has become essential in order to adapt to and mitigate these risks. Communicating SLR and other coastal risks is not a simple task. First, SLR is a phenomenon that is abstract as it is physically distant from many people; second, the rise of the sea is a slow and temporally distant process which makes this issue psychologically distant from our everyday life. Virtual reality (VR) simulations may offer a way to overcome some of these challenges, enabling users to learn key principles related to climate change and coastal risks in an immersive, interactive, and safe learning environment. This article first presents the literature on environmental issues communication and engagement; second, it introduces VR technology evolution and expands the discussion on VR application for environmental literacy. We then provide an account of how three coastal communities have used VR experiences developed by multidisciplinary teams—including residents—to support communication and community outreach focused on SLR and discuss their implications.more » « less
