  1. Abstract

We present13CO(J= 1 → 0) observations for the EDGE-CALIFA survey, which is a mapping survey of 126 nearby galaxies at a typical spatial resolution of 1.5 kpc. Using detected12CO emission as a prior, we detect13CO in 41 galaxies via integrated line flux over the entire galaxy and in 30 galaxies via integrated line intensity in resolved synthesized beams. Incorporating our CO observations and optical IFU spectroscopy, we perform a systematic comparison between the line ratio12/13I[12CO(J=10)]/I[13CO(J=10)]and the properties of the stars and ionized gas. Higher12/13values are found in interacting galaxies compared to those in noninteracting galaxies. The global12/13slightly increases with infrared colorF60/F100but appears insensitive to other host-galaxy properties such as morphology, stellar mass, or galaxy size. We also present azimuthally averaged12/13profiles for our sample up to a galactocentric radius of 0.4r25(∼6 kpc), taking into account the13CO nondetections by spectral stacking. The radial profiles of12/13are quite flat across our sample. Within galactocentric distances of 0.2r25, the azimuthally averaged12/13increases with the star formation rate. However, Spearman rank correlation tests show the azimuthally averaged12/13does not strongly correlate with any other gas or stellar properties in general, especially beyond 0.2r25from the galaxy centers. Our findings suggest that in the complex environments in galaxy disks,12/13is not a sensitive tracer for ISM properties. Dynamical disturbances, like galaxy interactions or the presence of a bar, also have an overall impact on12/13, which further complicates the interpretations of12/13variations.

  2. Abstract

Three binuclear species [LCoIII2(μ‐Pz)2](ClO4)3(1), [LNiII2(CH3OH)2Cl2]ClO4(2), and [LZnII2Cl2]PF6(3) supported by the deprotonated form of the ligand 2,6‐bis[bis(2‐pyridylmethyl) amino‐methyl]‐4‐methylphenol were synthesized, structurally characterized as solids and in solution, and had their electrochemical and spectroscopic behavior established. Species13had their water reduction ability studied aiming to interrogate the possible cooperative catalytic activity between two neighboring metal centers. Species1and2reduced H2O to H2effectively at an applied potential of −1.6 VAg/AgCl, yielding turnover numbers of 2,820 and 2,290, respectively, after 30 minutes. Species3lacked activity and was used as a negative control to eliminate the possibility of ligand‐based catalysis. Pre‐ and post‐catalytic data gave evidence of the molecular nature of the process within the timeframe of the experiments. Species1showed structural, rather than electronic cooperativity, while species2displayed no obvious cooperativity. DFT methods complemented the experimental results determining plausible mechanisms.

  3. Metallothioneins (MTs) are a ubiquitous class of small metal-binding proteins involved in metal homeostasis and detoxification. While known for their high affinity for d 10 metal ions, there is a surprising dearth of thermodynamic data on metals binding to MTs. In this study, Zn 2+ and Cu + binding to mammalian metallothionein-3 (MT-3) were quantified at pH 7.4 by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). Zn 2+ binding was measured by chelation titrations of Zn 7 MT-3, while Cu + binding was measured by Zn 2+ displacement from Zn 7 MT-3 with competition from glutathione (GSH). Titrations in multiple buffers enabled a detailed analysis that yielded condition-independent values for the association constant ( K ) and the change in enthalpy (Δ H ) and entropy (Δ S ) for these metal ions binding to MT-3. Zn 2+ was also chelated from the individual α and β domains of MT-3 to quantify the thermodynamics of inter-domain interactions in metal binding. Comparative titrations of Zn 7 MT-2 with Cu + revealed that both MT isoforms have similar Cu + affinities and binding thermodynamics, indicating that Δ H and Δ S are determined primarily by the conserved Cys residues. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis and low temperature luminescence measurements of Cu-replete samples showed that both proteins form two Cu 4 + –thiolate clusters when Cu + displaces Zn 2+ under physiological conditions. Comparison of the Zn 2+ and Cu + binding thermodynamics reveal that enthalpically-favoured Cu + , which forms Cu 4 + –thiolate clusters, displaces the entropically-favoured Zn 2+ . These results provide a detailed thermodynamic analysis of d 10 metal binding to these thiolate-rich proteins and quantitative support for, as well as molecular insight into, the role that MT-3 plays in the neuronal chemistry of copper.
