Even casual observations of a crow in flight or a shark swimming demonstrate that animal propulsive structures bend in patterned sequences during movement. Detailed engineering studies using controlled models in combination with analysis of flows left in the wakes of moving animals or objects have largely confirmed that flexibility can confer speed and efficiency advantages. These studies have generally focused on the material properties of propulsive structures (propulsors). However, recent developments provide a different perspective on the operation of nature's flexible propulsors, which we consider in this Commentary. First, we discuss how comparative animal mechanics have demonstrated that natural propulsors constructed with very different material properties bend with remarkably similar kinematic patterns. This suggests that ordering principles beyond basic material properties govern natural propulsor bending. Second, we consider advances in hydrodynamic measurements demonstrating suction forces that dramatically enhance overall thrust produced by natural bending patterns. This is a previously unrecognized source of thrust production at bending surfaces that may dominate total thrust production. Together, these advances provide a new mechanistic perspective on bending by animal propulsors operating in fluids – either water or air. This shift in perspective offers new opportunities for understanding animal motion as well as new avenues for investigation into engineered designs of vehicles operating in fluids.

ABSTRACT -
Scaling laws for the thrust production and energetics of self-propelled or fixed-velocity three-dimensional rigid propulsors undergoing pitching motions are presented. The scaling relations extend the two-dimensional scaling laws presented in Moored & Quinn ( AIAA J. , 2018, pp. 1–15) by accounting for the added mass of a finite-span propulsor, the downwash/upwash effects from the trailing vortex system of a propulsor and the elliptical topology of shedding trailing-edge vortices. The novel three-dimensional scaling laws are validated with self-propelled inviscid simulations and fixed-velocity experiments over a range of reduced frequencies, Strouhal numbers and aspect ratios relevant to bio-inspired propulsion. The scaling laws elucidate the dominant flow physics behind the thrust production and energetics of pitching bio-propulsors, and they provide guidance for the design of bio-inspired propulsive systems.more » « less

null (Ed.)In this work we investigate the effects of two distinct actuation methods on the hydrodynamics of elastic rectangular plates oscillating at resonance. Plates are driven by plunging motion at the root or actuated by a distributed internal bending moment at Reynolds numbers between 500 and 4000. The latter actuation method represents internally actuated smart materials and emulates the natural ability of swimming animals to continuously change their shapes with muscles. We conduct experiments with plunging elastic plates and piezoelectric plate actuators that are simulated using a fully coupled three-dimensional computational model based on the lattice Boltzmann method. After experimental validation the computational model is employed to probe plate hydrodynamics for a wide range of parameters, including large oscillation amplitudes which prompts nonlinear effects. The comparison between the two actuation methods reveals that, for the same level of tip deflection, externally actuated plates significantly outperform internally actuated plates in terms of thrust production and hydrodynamic efficiency. The reduced performance of internally actuated plates is associated with their suboptimal bending shapes which leads to a trailing edge geometry with enhanced vorticity generation and viscous dissipation. Furthermore, the difference in actuation methods impacts the inertia coefficient characterizing the plate oscillations, especially for large amplitudes. It is found that the inertia coefficient strongly depends on the tip deflection amplitude and the Reynolds number, and actuation method, especially for larger amplitudes.more » « less

Abstract This paper describes the preparation, physical properties, and electric bending actuation of a new class of active materials—ionic liquid crystal elastomers (iLCEs). It is demonstrated that iLCEs can be actuated by low‐frequency AC or DC voltages of less than 1 V. The bending strains of the unoptimized first iLCEs are already comparable to the well‐developed ionic electroactive polymers. Additionally, iLCEs exhibit several novel and superior features, such as the alignment that increases the performance of actuation, the possibility of preprogrammed actuation patterns at the level of the cross‐linking process, and dual (thermal and electric) actuations in hybrid samples. Since liquid crystal elastomers are also sensitive to magnetic fields and can also be light sensitive, iLCEs have far‐reaching potentials toward multiresponsive actuations that may have so far unmatched properties in soft robotics, sensing, and biomedical applications.

A self-powered, and self-actuating lithium ion battery (LIB) has the potential to achieve large deformation while still maintaining actuation force. The energy storage capability allows for continual actuation without an external power source once charged. Reshaping the actuator requires a nonuniform distribution of charge and/or bending stiffness. Spatially varying the state of charge and bending stiffness along the length of a segmented unimorph configuration have the effect of improving the tailorability of the deformed actuator. In this paper, an analytical model is developed to predict the actuation properties of the segmented unimorph beam to determine its usefulness as an actuator. The model predicts the free deflection, blocked deflection, and blocked force at the tip as a function of spatially varying state of charge and bending stiffness. The main contribution of the paper is the development of blocked deflection over the length of the segmented unimorph, which has not yet been considered in the literature. The model is verified using experimental data and commercial finite element analysis.more » « less
