Title: Human-Centered and Psychological Concepts in Undergraduate Engineering Project Documentation
The success of engineering and design is facilitated by a working understanding of human thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. In this study, we explored how undergraduate engineering students included such human-centered and psychological concepts in their project documentation. Although, we observed a range of concepts related to design processes, teams, cognition, and motivation, these concepts appeared infrequently and superficially. We discuss how this analysis and approach may help to identify topics that could be leveraged for future human-centered engineering instruction.  more » « less

  1. Human needs and goals are integral to engineering, but human-centered engineering requires understanding principles and methods from the social sciences. Instruction is needed to introduce engineering students to these concepts. This study explored (a) students’ initial attitudes toward human systems engineering (HSE) and the bridging of psychology and engineering and (b) how attitudes shifted over one semester. Undergraduate students responded to a survey of their attitudes and conceptions at the beginning (n = 215) and end (n = 146) of a semester. Students reported high perceived value for human-centered engineering, and these attitudes remained stable or increased. Students gained in their perceived understanding of psychological concepts and user-centered design, their ability to define HSE, and ability to articulate the value of human-centered engineering. Introductory coursework in Human Systems Engineering may thus help to prepare engineering students to appreciate the psychological underpinnings of their work and engage in human-centered engineering.

  2. The success of a design is not determined solely by its technical aspects. A design must work for the people who will be using it and in the context in which it will be used. Human-centered design approaches suggest strategies to remind engineering designers of the people impacted by their design decisions. While many of these strategies can be used within and across multiple design phases, during the act of sketching concepts during concept generation, there are few explicit strategies for centering people. We investigate possible impact from a simple intervention during a concept generation task through a between-subjects experiment. Working alone is a single design session, half of a group of mechanical engineering students were asked to explicitly “represent people” within their conceptual sketches. Afterwards, all students reviewed each of their concepts to answer, “Who is this idea for? Who do you imagine would use it?” Those who received the intervention requiring representation of people within concept sketches produced significantly longer reflections with greater depth compared to the control group. Adding drawings of people to sketches resulted in more consideration of the social and physical context of use and of the user's personal preferences and values. Depicting people in generated concepts substantially reduced claims a design is "for everyone,” suggesting explicit representation of potential users produced more thoughtful consideration of diversity among potential users.

  3. Learning critical concepts that are centered on the analysis, design, and maintenance of transportation infrastructure systems poses a measure of difficulty for undergraduates in engineering. Therefore, hands-on learning pedagogy should be an excellent precursor to increase understanding of these concepts, since the pedagogy incorporates real-life experience in the delivery. This paper describes how a hands-on learning pedagogy called experiment-centric pedagogy (ECP) has been used to teach these concepts to undergraduate students at a historically Black university. The research questions are as follows: (1) How well can ECP improve students’ understanding of concepts essential to the analysis and design of transportation infrastructure systems? (2) How has the ECP facilitated the achievement of the learning objectives of these concepts? and (3) Does an ECP increase the engagement of undergraduate students in their transportation infrastructure engineering learning and lead to measurable lasting gains? To answer these research questions, ECP was implemented and assessed when used to teach the concepts of stress and strain utilized in the analysis of bridges and other transportation infrastructure, sound used in the development and design of noise barriers, moisture content in controlling compaction of highway infrastructure systems, and degradation of infrastructure systems exposed to various environmental settings. Assessment results from 92 undergraduates reveal an increase in students’ motivation and cognitive understanding of the relevant concepts, as well as learning gains and an improved success rate compared to the traditional method of teaching.

  4. One of the key challenges facing the engineering design community is how to effectively measure the nebulous construct of design novelty. The community has adopted two vastly different approaches to solving this problem; a more quantitative approach that relies on feature-trees and a more subjective approach that uses human raters. The goal of this study was to identify a method for using human raters as a means of calibrating feature-tree based novelty metrics in engineering design. This was accomplished through a study where four raters were asked to follow a think-out-loud protocol while they physically created idea maps for 10 design concepts based on the similarity of these concepts. Content analysis was used to identify the relative importance of idea properties that informed judgements of concept similarity. This analysis was then compared to the weights used in traditional feature-tree based novelty methods. These results of this study can be used to calibrate existing metrics against expert ratings to provide justification for the categorizes used in the creation of a feature tree in engineering design research and also justify the weights used in the computation of design novelty.

As artificial intelligence (AI) increasingly enters K-12 classrooms, what do teachers and students see as the roles of human versus AI instruction, and how might educational AI (AIED) systems best be designed to support these complementary roles? We explore these questions through participatory design and needs validation studies with K-12 teachers and students. Using human-centered design methods rarely employed in AIED research, this work builds on prior findings to contribute: (1) an analysis of teacher and student feedback on 24 design concepts for systems that integrate human and AI instruction; and (2) participatory speed dating (PSD): a new variant of the speed dating design method, involving iterative concept generation and evaluation with multiple stakeholders. Using PSD, we found that teachers desire greater real-time support from AI tutors in identifying when students need human help, in evaluating the impacts of their own help-giving, and in managing student motivation. Meanwhile, students desire better mechanisms to signal help-need during class without losing face to peers, to receive emotional support from human rather than AI tutors, and to have greater agency over how their personal analytics are used. This work provides tools and insights to guide the design of more effective human–AI partnerships for K-12 education.
