Have you ever wondered how your friends impact how you see the world? Or how you are able to keep track of the many different people in your life? To study these questions, scientists have begun to look at people’s social networks and their brains at the same time. In this article, we introduce this area of study and discuss how scientists use ideas from both neuroscience and mathematics to examine these questions. We also highlight some recent discoveries that reveal both how our brains support our ability to socialize with others and how our relationships with other people are related to how we use our brains.

Focusing and Accelerating Light with the Same Flat Lens
We demonstrate how a simple 1D flat lens can be utilized to not only focus light but to generate non-paraxial accelerating beams. We further report how illumination angle and wavelength degrees of freedom allow dynamic transition between these two functionalities.

In this paper, we make a case for the importance of teaching secondary school level algebra to students with learning disabilities (LD). Furthermore, we illustrate how they struggle and present best-practices on how they are best supported. We demonstrate effective ways of how teachers can show students with LD how to solve challenging algebra problems. In particular, we depict how educators can help learners with LD show their work on paper in ways that support their thinking processes as they engage with challenging algebra problems.more » « less

In this paper we explore the implementations of an activity designed to engage students in an embodied simulation of an artistically expressive Agent-based modeling environment. We compare how two facilitators implemented the same activity, analyzing how they co-developed differing substrates with their students. We argue that instructors facilitated different embodied agent-based perspectives, which led students to develop considerably different conceptualizations of how these agents interact and how to code in this environment.more » « less

Artistic computing learning environments have been of central importance in the exploration of how to support equity and inclusion in computing. Explorations within e-textiles, music, and interactive media, for example, have created diverse opportunities for learning how to program while creating culturally relevant artifacts. However, there is a gap in our understanding of the design processes of learners in these constructionist environments, including how the computational artifacts and their components impact the learning processes and the ways they build meaning and agency with computing. We advocate for research to attend more closely to the materiality of the computational materials to understand how they impact the social and cultural dimensions in which students are learning. In this paper, we present an analysis of 6 high school learners’ experiences within a co-designed arts and computing curriculum. Our analyses highlight how the materiality of the components impacted the ways in which learners developed personal and epistemological connections to computing based on how it enabled them to connect to their interests, represent their ideas, engage with their community, and overcome or navigate around challenges to get to their final designs. We demonstrate how centralizing the materiality in the design of computational construction kits can inform how we support agency and engagement with computing.more » « less

A recent surge of users migrating from Twitter to alternative platforms, such as Mastodon, raised questions regarding what migration patterns are, how different platforms impact user behaviors, and how migrated users settle in the migration process. In this study, we elaborate how we investigate these questions by collecting data over 10,000 users who migrated from Twitter to Mastodon within the first ten weeks following Elon Musk's acquisition of Twitter. Our research is structured in three primary steps. First, we develop algorithms to extract and analyze migration patters. Second, by leveraging behavioral analysis, we examine the distinct architectures of Twitter and Mastodon to learn how different platforms shape user behaviors on each platform. Last, we determine how particular behavioral factors influence users to stay on Mastodon. We share our findings of user migration, insights, and lessons learned from the user behavior study.more » « less
