Abstract This study explores the intersection of Theory of Mind (ToM) abilities and driving performance among novice drivers, with a focus on autistic individuals. The purpose is to investigate how ToM deficits may impact driving behaviors and decision-making, ultimately informing the development of tailored interventions and training programs for autistic drivers. We conducted a series of driving simulations using a custom-built driving simulator, capturing multimodal data including driving performance metrics, attention allocation, and physiological responses. Participants were categorized based on NEPSY scores, which assess ToM abilities, and self-reported autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis. Driving tasks were designed to simulate real-world scenarios, particularly focusing on intersections and merging, where ToM skills are crucial for safe navigation. Our analysis revealed differences in driving behaviors among participants with varying ToM abilities as determined through the NEPSY. Participants with lower NEPSY scores exhibited less smooth driving behaviors, increased risk-taking tendencies, and differences in attention allocation compared to those with higher scores. Alternatively, individuals with ASD displayed comparable driving patterns overall. ToM abilities influence driving behaviors and decision-making, particularly in complex social driving scenarios. Tailored interventions addressing ToM deficits and stress management could improve driving safety and accessibility for autistic individuals. This study underscores the importance of considering social cognitive factors in driving education and licensure pathways, aiming for greater inclusivity and accessibility in transportation systems.

Social Class Predicts Emotion Perception and Perspective-Taking Performance in Adults
“Theory of Mind” (ToM; people’s ability to infer and use information about others’ mental states) varies across cultures. In four studies ( N = 881), including two preregistered replications, we show that social class predicts performance on ToM tasks. In Studies 1A and 1B, we provide new evidence for a relationship between social class and emotion perception: Higher-class individuals performed more poorly than their lower-class counterparts on the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test, which has participants infer the emotional states of targets from images of their eyes. In Studies 2A and 2B, we provide the first evidence that social class predicts visual perspective taking: Higher-class individuals made more errors than lower-class individuals in the Director Task, which requires participants to assume the visual perspective of another person. Potential mechanisms linking social class to performance in different ToM domains, as well as implications for deficiency-centered perspectives on low social class, are discussed.

Although theory of mind (ToM) is seen as a primary contributor to pragmatic language use in autistic individuals, less work has considered the influence of structural language. This study examines grammaticality judgements, ToM (Reading the Eyes in the Mind, Social Attribution Test), and pragmatic language (a de novo measure based on Pragmatic Language Scales), and their associations, in three groups with heterogenous abilities: Current autism (n = 36); those with a history of autism spectrum disorder, who no longer display symptoms ( “loss of autism diagnosis”, LAD; n = 32), and non-autistic (n = 36) adolescents and adults with fluent verbal skills. Results showed pragmatic difficulties in autism, relative to both other groups, difficulties in affective ToM relative to both other groups, and difficulties in structural language relative to neurotypical controls; LAD individuals showed no impairments. While pairwise associations of structural language and matrix reasoning with pragmatic language were observed, ToM was the only unique predictor of pragmatic language when all measures were included in the models. Results suggest complex interactions among pragmatic and structural language, and ToM, and that pragmatic language improves meaningfully with broad changes in broad aspects of autism when individuals lose the autism diagnosis.more » « less

When reading narratives, human readers rely on their Theory of Mind (ToM) to infer not only what the characters know from their utterances, but also whether characters are likely to share common ground. As in human conversation, such decisions are not infallible but probabilistic, based on the evidence available in the narrative. By responding on a scale (rather than Yes/No), humans can indicate commitment to their inferences about what characters know (ToM). We use two prompting approaches to explore (i) how well LLM judgments align with human judgments, and (ii) how well LLMs infer the author’s intent from utterances intended to project knowledge in narratives.more » « less

Abstract Many studies have claimed to find that reading fiction leads to improvements in social cognition. But this work has left open the critical question of whether any type of narrative, fictional or nonfictional, might have similar effects. To address this question, as well as to test whether framing a narrative as fiction matters, the current studies presented participants ( N = 268 in Study 1; N = 362 in Study 2) with literary fiction texts, narrative nonfiction texts, expository nonfiction texts, or no texts. We tested their theory-of-mind abilities using the picture-based Reading the Mind in the Eyes task and a text-based test of higher-order social cognition. Reading anything was associated with higher scores compared to reading nothing, but the effects of framing and text type were inconsistent. These results suggest that prior claims regarding positive effects of reading fiction on mentalizing should be seen as tenuous; other mechanisms may be driving previously published effects.more » « less

This study evaluated how a robot demonstrating a Theory of Mind (ToM) influenced human perception of social intelligence and animacy in a human-robot interaction. Data was gathered through an online survey where participants watched a video depicting a NAO robot either failing or passing the Sally-Anne false-belief task. Participants (N = 60) were randomly assigned to either the Pass or Fail condition. A Perceived Social Intelligence Survey and the Perceived Intelligence and Animacy subsections of the Godspeed Questionnaire were used as measures. The Godspeed was given before viewing the task to measure participant expectations, and again after to test changes in opinion. Our findings show that robots demonstrating ToM significantly increase perceived social intelligence, while robots demonstrating ToM deficiencies are perceived as less socially intelligent.more » « less
