  1. The Covid-19 pandemic has majorly influenced the research around smart city applications and data management. One big topic for Smart City Applications are the novel traffic patterns. Traffic is going back to values near pre-pandemic and adding further traffic via delivery services that arose during the pandemic and are here to stay. Fast data solutions, efficient software frameworks and sensors as well as novel concepts such as semantic advancements are needed to address such challenges. The minitrack presents semantic complex event processing for processing sensor data. The panel addresses current trends evolving from new traffic patterns in cities and rural areas as well as trends in data streaming.

  2. This research paper describes the design of a pill dispensing device that can assist people with physical or cognitive limitations in taking their prescribed medications. The design is based on the communication between two devices for the purpose of dispensing pills at a scheduled time and identifying if these pills had been properly consumed within a specified time frame. The two devices are based on Arduino RP2040 connect microcontrollers and implement several sensors in the aid of dispensing and detecting of pill consumption. The sensors implemented are an IMU, and distances sensors, such as an ultrasonic sensor and an IR proximity sensor, additionally a real time clock module and stepper motor have been included in the design for the scheduling and dispensing of the pills. The two devices will communicate using Bluetooth for low energy devices (BLE) and the purpose of the devices is to provide aid to the intended target audience in achieving a healthier lifestyle.

    Abstract In this paper, we present a large-scale measurement study of the smart TV advertising and tracking ecosystem. First, we illuminate the network behavior of smart TVs as used in the wild by analyzing network traffic collected from residential gateways. We find that smart TVs connect to well-known and platform-specific advertising and tracking services (ATSes). Second, we design and implement software tools that systematically explore and collect traffic from the top-1000 apps on two popular smart TV platforms, Roku and Amazon Fire TV. We discover that a subset of apps communicate with a large number of ATSes, and that some ATS organizations only appear on certain platforms, showing a possible segmentation of the smart TV ATS ecosystem across platforms. Third, we evaluate the (in)effectiveness of DNS-based blocklists in preventing smart TVs from accessing ATSes. We highlight that even smart TV-specific blocklists suffer from missed ads and incur functionality breakage. Finally, we examine our Roku and Fire TV datasets for exposure of personally identifiable information (PII) and find that hundreds of apps exfiltrate PII to third parties and platform domains. We also find evidence that some apps send the advertising ID alongside static PII values, effectively eliminating the user’s ability to opt out of ad personalization.

  4. Advances and innovations in materials science and engineering have always played a substantial role in civil engineering, building structural design, and construction. In recent years, extensive effort has been devoted to the applications of stimuli-responsive smart materials and nanostructures in buildings. These smart materials used in the built environment can be defined as those offering specific functional and adaptable properties in response to thermal, optical, structural, and environmental stimuli. Not only do these materials enhance the overall performance of new building construction but also promise safer structures, longer durability of building elements, efficient building energy savings, greater environmental sustainability, and even higher indoor user comfort. Given the increasing imperatives for the above, we have organized this themed special issue that focuses on smart buildings and construction materials. The main aim of this special issue is to encapsulate the current interest and state of research related to the smart materials in building and construction applications, underpinning current and future challenges in building energy, environmental sustainability, and structural safety and durability.
