  1. We advance the characterization of complexity in quantum many-body systems by examiningW W -states embedded in a spin chain. Such states show an amount of non-stabilizerness or “magic”, measured as the Stabilizer Rényi Entropy, that grows logarithmically with the number of qubits/spins. We focus on systems whose Hamiltonian admits a classical point with extensive degeneracy. Near these points, a Clifford circuit can convert the ground state into aW W -state, while in the rest of the phase to which the classical point belongs, it is dressed with local quantum correlations. Topological frustrated quantum spin-chains host phases with the desired phenomenology, and we show that their ground state’s Stabilizer Rényi Entropy is the sum of that of theW W -states plus an extensive local contribution. Our work reveals thatW W -states/frustrated ground states display a non-local degree of complexity that can be harvested as a quantum resource and has no counterpart in GHZ states/non-frustrated systems.

Recently, non-metallic materials which are resilient- to-corrosion, low cost, and light weight have been exploited in many industrial sectors. A common application of them is in the form of pipes. Due to the fact that the traditional NDT methods are mostly effective for metallic pipes, here, a microwave holographic imaging combined with standardized minimum norm (SMN) is proposed for inspection of multiple concentric nonmetallic pipes. To reduce the complexity of the system, we aim at using the narrowest possible frequency band by using an array of receiver antennas. The validity of the proposed imaging method is demonstrated via simulation and experimental results.

  3. Abstract Intermediate filaments (IFs) formed by vimentin are less understood than their cytoskeletal partners, microtubules and F‐actin, but the unique physical properties of IFs, especially their resistance to large deformations, initially suggest a mechanical function. Indeed, vimentin IFs help regulate cell mechanics and contractility, and in crowded 3D environments they protect the nucleus during cell migration. Recently, a multitude of studies, often using genetic or proteomic screenings show that vimentin has many non‐mechanical functions within and outside of cells. These include signaling roles in wound healing, lipogenesis, sterol processing, and various functions related to extracellular and cell surface vimentin. Extracellular vimentin is implicated in marking circulating tumor cells, promoting neural repair, and mediating the invasion of host cells by viruses, including SARS‐CoV, or bacteria such asListeriaandStreptococcus. These findings underscore the fundamental role of vimentin in not only cell mechanics but also a range of physiological functions. Also see the video abstract herehttps://youtu.be/YPfoddqvz-g.

  4. The non-orientable 4-genus of a knot [Formula: see text] in [Formula: see text] is defined to be the minimum first Betti number of a non-orientable surface [Formula: see text] smoothly embedded in [Formula: see text] so that [Formula: see text] bounds [Formula: see text]. We will survey the tools used to compute the non-orientable 4-genus, and use various techniques to calculate this invariant for non-alternating 11 crossing knots. We will also view obstructions to a knot bounding a Möbius band given by the double branched cover of [Formula: see text] branched over [Formula: see text].
