Title: Stipends Successfully Swell Circle
The efficacy of stipends in drawing new teachers to participate in a Math Teachers’ Circle and encouraging previous participants to attend meetings regularly was investigated in this study. A kickoff event was planned to start the year with more fanfare than usual. Stipends were advertised for teachers who attended at least three meetings.     This paper explores how a professional learning community (PLC) redesigns high school mathematics lessons towards a shared commitment. We describe the nature of a PLC’s collective curricular vision to illuminate how teachers can come to new understandings as a group in order to shift the ways students experience mathematics. Using the curricular noticing framework (attending, interpreting, and responding), we analyzed the meetings of a PLC with six teachers as they individually presented lessons to be redesigned with a focus on the group’s shared commitment. Findings indicate three ways ideas were introduced that led to expansive responses, which suggests this analytic approach could identify ways in which a PLC can work towards new curricular decisions.

  5. This paper will share the development and refinement of a coaching program for high school computer science teachers focused on equity. Two midwest organizations developed coach professional development, selected teachers (coachees), and facilitated a coaching program during the academic year. Two cohorts of the coaching program, serving 20 coaches and 30 coachees, were offered over the course of two and a half years. Working as a researcher-practitioner partnership, the organizations used evaluation and research data to inform improvements during the program offerings and between the first and second cohort. The paper will describe the coaching professional development content and format, the coach professional learning community and activities, and the coach-coachee meetings and other supports and changes made.
