Synthesis of new chromium(II) complexes with chelating bis(alkoxide) ligand [OO]Ph (H2[OO]Ph = [1,1′:4′,1′’-terphenyl]-2,2′’-diylbis(diphenylmethanol)) and their subsequent reactivity in the context of catalytic production of carbodiimides from azides and isocyanides are described. Two different Cr(II) complexes are obtained, as a function of the crystallization solvent: mononuclear Cr[OO]Ph(THF)2 (in toluene/THF, THF = tetrahydrofuran) and dinuclear Cr2([OO]Ph)2 (in CH2Cl2/THF). The electronic structure and bonding in Cr[OO]Ph(THF)2 were probed by density functional theory calculations. Isolated Cr2([OO]Ph)2 undergoes facile reaction with 4-MeC6H4N3, 4-MeOC6H4N3, or 3,5-Me2C6H3N3 to yield diamagnetic Cr(VI) bis(imido) complexes; a structure of Cr[OO]Ph(N(4-MeC6H4))2 was confirmed by X-ray crystallography. The reaction of Cr2([OO]Ph)2 with bulkier azides N3R (MesN3, AdN3) forms paramagnetic products, formulated as Cr[OO]Ph(NR). The attempted formation of a Cr–alkylidene complex (using N2CPh2) instead forms chromium(VI) bis(diphenylmethylenehydrazido) complex Cr[OO]Ph(NNCPh2)2. Catalytic formation of carbodiimides was investigated for the azide/isocyanide mixtures containing various aryl azides and isocyanides. The formation of carbodiimides was found to depend on the nature of organoazide: whereas bulky mesitylazide led to the formation of carbodiimides with all isocyanides, no carbodiimide formation was observed for 3,5-dimethylphenylazide or 4-methylphenylazide. Treatment of Cr2([OO]Ph)2 or H2[OO]Ph with NO+ leads to the formation of [1,2-b]-dihydroindenofluorene, likely obtained via carbocation-mediated cyclization of the ligand.

Synthesis and structure of a new bulky bis(alkoxide) ligand on a terphenyl platform
A new sterically bulky chelating bis(alkoxide) ligand 3,3′-([1,1′:4′,1′′-terphenyl]-2,2′′-diyl)bis(2,2,4,4-tetramethylpentan-3-ol), (H 2 [OO] tBu ), was prepared in a two-step process as the dichloromethane monosolvate, C 36 H 50 O 2 ·CH 2 Cl 2 . The first step is a Suzuki–Miyaura coupling reaction between 2-bromophenylboronic acid and 1,4-diiodobenzene. The resulting 2,2′′-dibromo-1,1′:4′,1′′-terphenyl was reacted with t BuLi and hexamethylacetone to obtain the desired product. The crystal structure of H 2 [OO] tBu revealed an anti conformation of the [CPh 2 (OH)] fragments relative to the central phenyl. Furthermore, the hydroxyl groups point away from each other. Likely because of this anti – anti conformation, the attempts to synthesize first-row transition-metal complexes with H 2 [OO] tBu were not successful.

Treatment of Mn(N(SiMe3)2)2(THF)2 with bulky chelating bis(alkoxide) ligand [1,1′:4′,1′′-terphenyl]-2,2′′-diylbis(diphenylmethanol) (H2[O-terphenyl-O]Ph) formed a seesaw manganese(II) complex Mn[O-terphenyl-O]Ph(THF)2, characterized by structural, spectroscopic, magnetic, and analytical methods. The reactivity of Mn[O-terphenyl-O]Ph(THF)2 with various nitrene precursors was investigated. No reaction was observed between Mn[O-terphenyl-O]Ph(THF)2 and aryl azides. In contrast, the treatment of Mn[O-terphenyl-O]Ph(THF)2 with iminoiodinane PhINTs (Ts = p-toluenesulfonyl) was consistent with the formation of a metal-nitrene complex. In the presence of styrene, the reaction led to the formation of aziridine. Combining varying ratios of styrene and PhINTs in different solvents with 10 mol% of Mn[O-terphenyl-O]Ph(THF)2 at room temperature produced 2-phenylaziridine in up to a 79% yield. Exploration of the reactivity of Mn[O-terphenyl-O]Ph(THF)2 with various olefins revealed (1) moderate aziridination yields for p-substituted styrenes, irrespective of the electronic nature of the substituent; (2) moderate yield for 1,1′-disubstituted α-methylstyrene; (3) no aziridination for aliphatic α-olefins; (4) complex product mixtures for the β-substituted styrenes. DFT calculations suggest that iminoiodinane is oxidatively added upon binding to Mn, and the resulting formal imido intermediate has a high-spin Mn(III) center antiferromagnetically coupled to an imidyl radical. This imidyl radical reacts with styrene to form a sextet intermediate that readily reductively eliminates the formation of a sextet Mn(II) aziridine complex.more » « less

null (Ed.)The effects of sequential n-doping on a high-electron-mobility naphthalene-diimide-based copolymer poly[( N , N ′-bis(2-decyltetradecyl)-naphthalene-1,8:4,5-bis(dicarboximide)-2,6-diyl)-(selenophene-2,5-diyl)-(benzo[ c ][1,2,5]thiadiazole-4,7-diyl)-(selenophene-2,5-diyl)], PNBS, are reported. Grazing-incidence XRD measurements show that PNBS doped with 2,2′-bis(4-(dimethylamino)phenyl)-1,1′,3,3′-tetramethyl-2,2′,3,3′-tetrahydro-1 H ,1′ H -2,2′-bibenzo[ d ]imidazole, (N-DMBI) 2 , has increased order relative to both the pristine polymer and a film doped with ruthenium pentamethylcyclopentadienyl mesitylene dimer. Films of PNBS optimally doped with (N-DMBI) 2 show electrical conductivities approaching 2 mS cm −1 in air. Temperature-dependent electrical measurements suggest that the polaronic charge carriers are highly localized, which is consistent with the moderate conductivity values obtained.more » « less

Abstract Highly congested derivatives of biphenyl were prepared by double Diels‐Alder reactions of cyclopentadienones with substituted butadiynes. The reaction of 2,3,5‐tri(tert‐butyl)cyclopentadienone (5) and diphenylbutadiyne (3) gave only the single adduct, 1‐(phenylethynyl)‐2‐phenyl‐3,5,6‐tri‐tert‐butylbenzene (6), and even extreme conditions gave no second addition. When tetracyclone (4) was added to bis(trimethylsilyl)butadiyne (8), two additions were achieved, but one silyl group was lost either during, or immediately following, the second addition to give 2‐(trimethylsilyl)‐2′,3,3′,4,4′,5,5′,6‐octaphenylbiphenyl (11). However, when 3,4‐diphenyl‐2,5‐dimethylcyclopentadienone (12) was added to8, the fully substituted 2,2′‐bis(trimethylsilyl)‐4,4′,5,5′‐tetraphenyl‐3,3′,6,6′‐tetramethylbiphenyl (14) was formed. The X‐ray structures of compounds11and14show them to be quite crowded, but the central biphenyl rings do not exhibit the distortions previously observed in decaphenylbiphenyl. In an alternative approach, arynes were added to 5,5′‐bis(4‐chlorophenyl)‐3,3′,4,4′‐tetraphenyl‐2,2′‐bis(cyclopentadienone) (18). Simple benzyne added twice to give 4,4′‐bis(4‐chlorophenyl)‐2,2′,3,3′‐tetraphenyl‐1,1′‐binaphthyl (19) in low yield, but tetraphenylbenzyne, generated from tetraphenylanthranilic acid, added only once.more » « less

Reactions of the bicompartmental bis(phenolato) compound 6,6′-methylenebis(2-((bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amino)methyl)-4-chlorophenol)hemihydrate (H 2 L ½H 2 O) with 3d metal( ii ) ions afforded novel fully structurally characterized bridged acetato dinuclear complexes [Mn 2 (HL)(μ 1,2 -OAc) 2 ]PF 6 (1) [Zn 2 (HL)(μ 1,2 -OAc)(H 2 O) 0.75 (MeOH) 0.25 ](PF 6 ) 2 ·0.45(H 2 O) (5) and [Cd 2 (HL)(μ 1,1,2 -OAc)(OAc)(H 2 O)]PF 6 ·H 2 O (6) as well as the polymeric bridged-azido tetranuclear catena -[Cu 4 (HL) 2 (μ 1,1 -N 3 ) 2 (μ 1,3 -N 3 ) 2 ](NO 3 ) 2 ·5H 2 O (4). The complex [Cu 4 (HL) 2 (ClO 4 ) 3 (H 2 O) 5 ](ClO 4 ) 3 ·5H 2 O (2) was partially characterized. In addition, three more dinuclear complexes [Cu 2 (H 2 L)(NO 3 ) 2 (H 2 O) 2 ](NO 3 ) 2 (3), [Cu 2 (HL)(OAc)(CH 3 OH)](PF 6 ) 2 (7) and [Cu 2 (HL)(NCS) 2 ]NO 3 ·2H 2 O (8) were also isolated. All complexes were characterized by CHN elemental analysis, IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy, ESI-MS, conductivity measurements and X-ray single crystal crystallography for compounds 1, 4, 5 and 6, where the bis(phenolato) ligand displayed different deprotonation (H 2 L, HL − and L 2− ). The magnetic susceptibility measurements over the temperature range 2–300 K revealed very weak antiferromagnetic coupling in dimanganese( ii ) 1 ( J = −1.64(1) cm −1 ) and almost negligible magnetic interaction in dicopper( ii ) 2 ( J = 0(3) cm −1 ). In the azido catena -[Cu 4 (HL) 2 (μ 1,1 -N 3 ) 2 (μ 1,3 -N 3 ) 2 ](NO 3 ) 2 ·5H 2 O (4) complex, the J value of −133(3) cm −1 was obtained upon moderate-to-strong antiferromagnetic coupling through the di-μ 1,3 -N 3 -bridged dicopper( ii ) unit with no magnetic interaction between the two copper( ii ) ions in the di-μ 1,1 -N 3 -bridged unit.more » « less
