null (Ed.)A bstract The inclusive J/ ψ elliptic ( v 2 ) and triangular ( v 3 ) flow coefficients measured at forward rapidity (2 . 5 < y < 4) and the v 2 measured at midrapidity (| y | < 0 . 9) in Pb-Pb collisions at $$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $$ s NN = 5 . 02 TeV using the ALICE detector at the LHC are reported. The entire Pb-Pb data sample collected during Run 2 is employed, amounting to an integrated luminosity of 750 μ b − 1 at forward rapidity and 93 μ b − 1 at midrapidity. The results are obtained using the scalar product method and are reported as a function of transverse momentum p T and collision centrality. At midrapidity, the J/ ψ v 2 is in agreement with the forward rapidity measurement. The centrality averaged results indicate a positive J/ ψ v 3 with a significance of more than 5 σ at forward rapidity in the p T range 2 < p T < 5 GeV/ c . The forward rapidity v 2 , v 3 , and v 3 /v 2 results at low and intermediate p T ( p T ≲ 8 GeV/ c ) exhibit a mass hierarchy when compared to pions and D mesons, while converging into a species-independent curve at higher p T . At low and intermediate p T , the results could be interpreted in terms of a later thermalization of charm quarks compared to light quarks, while at high p T , path-length dependent effects seem to dominate. The J/ ψ v 2 measurements are further compared to a microscopic transport model calculation. Using a simplified extension of the quark scaling approach involving both light and charm quark flow components, it is shown that the D-meson v n measurements can be described based on those for charged pions and J/ ψ flow.more » « less

Experimental studies of the collisions of heavy nuclei at relativistic energies have established the properties of the quark–gluon plasma (QGP), a state of hot, dense nuclear matter in which quarks and gluons are not bound into hadrons1–4. In this state, matter behaves as a nearly inviscid fluid5 that efficiently translates initial spatial anisotropies into correlated momentum anisotropies among the particles produced, creating a common velocity field pattern known as collective flow. In recent years, comparable momentum anisotropies have been measured in small-system proton–proton (p+p) and proton–nucleus (p+A) collisions, despite expectations that the volume and lifetime of the medium produced would be too small to form a QGP. Here we report on the observation of elliptic and triangular flow patterns of charged particles produced in proton–gold (p+Au), deuteron–gold (d+Au) and helium–gold (3He+Au) collisions at a nucleon–nucleon centre-of-mass energy sNN−−−√ = 200 GeV. The unique combination of three distinct initial geometries and two flow patterns provides unprecedented model discrimination. Hydrodynamical models, which include the formation of a short-lived QGP droplet, provide the best simultaneous description of these measurements.more » « less

QLBT: a linear Boltzmann transport model for heavy quarks in a quark-gluon plasma of quasi-particles
Abstract We develop a new heavy quark transport model, QLBT, to simulate the dynamical propagation of heavy quarks inside the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Our QLBT model is based on the linear Boltzmann transport (LBT) model with the ideal QGP replaced by a collection of quasi-particles to account for the non-perturbative interactions among quarks and gluons of the hot QGP. The thermal masses of quasi-particles are fitted to the equation of state from lattice QCD simulations using the Bayesian statistical analysis method. Combining QLBT with our advanced hybrid fragmentation-coalescence hadronization approach, we calculate the nuclear modification factor
and the elliptic flow$$R_\mathrm {AA}$$ of$$v_2$$ D mesons at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider. By comparing our QLBT calculation to the experimental data on theD meson and$$R_\mathrm {AA}$$ , we extract the heavy quark transport parameter$$v_2$$ and diffusion coefficient$$\hat{q}$$ in the temperature range of$$D_\mathrm {s}$$ , and compare them with the lattice QCD results and other phenomenological studies.$$1-4~T_\mathrm {c}$$ -
A bstract The production of prompt D 0 , D + , and D *+ mesons was measured at midrapidity (| y | < 0.5) in Pb–Pb collisions at the centre-of-mass energy per nucleon–nucleon pair $$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $$ s NN = 5 . 02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The D mesons were reconstructed via their hadronic decay channels and their production yields were measured in central (0–10%) and semicentral (30–50%) collisions. The measurement was performed up to a transverse momentum ( p T ) of 36 or 50 GeV/c depending on the D meson species and the centrality interval. For the first time in Pb–Pb collisions at the LHC, the yield of D 0 mesons was measured down to p T = 0, which allowed a model-independent determination of the p T -integrated yield per unit of rapidity (d N/ d y ). A maximum suppression by a factor 5 and 2.5 was observed with the nuclear modification factor ( R AA ) of prompt D mesons at p T = 6–8 GeV/c for the 0–10% and 30–50% centrality classes, respectively. The D-meson R AA is compared with that of charged pions, charged hadrons, and J /ψ mesons as well as with theoretical predictions. The analysis of the agreement between the measured R AA , elliptic ( v 2 ) and triangular ( v 3 ) flow, and the model predictions allowed us to constrain the charm spatial diffusion coefficient D s . Furthermore the comparison of R AA and v 2 with different implementations of the same models provides an important insight into the role of radiative energy loss as well as charm quark recombination in the hadronisation mechanisms.more » « less

null (Ed.)A bstract We study inclusive jet suppression and modifications in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) with a transport-based model. The model includes vacuum-like parton shower evolution at high-virtuality, a linearized transport for jet-medium interactions, and a simple ansatz for the jet-induced hydrodynamic response of the medium. Model parameters are calibrated to nuclear modification factors for inclusive hadron $$ {R}_{AA}^h $$ R AA h and single inclusive jets $$ {R}_{AA}^j $$ R AA j with cone size R = 0 . 4 in 0–10% central Au-Au and Pb-Pb collisions measured at the RHIC and LHC. The calibrated model consistently describes the cone-size dependent $$ {R}_{AA}^j $$ R AA j ( R ), modifications to inclusive jet fragmentation functions and jet shape. We discuss the origin of these modifications by analyzing the medium-induced jet energy flow in this model and elucidate the interplay of hard parton evolution and jet-induced medium response. In particular, we demonstrate that the excess of soft hadrons at p T ∼ 2 GeV/ c in jet fragmentation function and jet shape at large $$ r=\sqrt{\Delta {\eta}^2+\Delta {\phi}^2} $$ r = Δ η 2 + Δ ϕ 2 are consequences of both soft medium-induced gluon radiation and jet-induced medium excitation.more » « less
