Title: Revisiting the multi-monopole point of SU(N) $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 2 gauge theory in four dimensions
A bstract Motivated by applications to soft supersymmetry breaking, we revisit the expansion of the Seiberg-Witten solution around the multi-monopole point on the Coulomb branch of pure SU( N ) $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 2 gauge theory in four dimensions. At this point N − 1 mutually local magnetic monopoles become massless simultaneously, and in a suitable duality frame the gauge couplings logarithmically run to zero. We explicitly calculate the leading threshold corrections to this logarithmic running from the Seiberg-Witten solution by adapting a method previously introduced by D’Hoker and Phong. We compare our computation to existing results in the literature; this includes results specific to SU(2) and SU(3) gauge theories, the large- N results of Douglas and Shenker, as well as results obtained by appealing to integrable systems or topological strings. We find broad agreement, while also clarifying some lingering inconsistencies. Finally, we explicitly extend the results of Douglas and Shenker to finite N , finding exact agreement with our first calculation.  more » « less

  1. A bstract We consider the Seiberg-Witten solution of pure $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 2 gauge theory in four dimensions, with gauge group SU( N ). A simple exact series expansion for the dependence of the 2( N − 1) Seiberg-Witten periods a I ( u ) , a DI ( u ) on the N − 1 Coulomb-branch moduli u n is obtained around the ℤ 2 N -symmetric point of the Coulomb branch, where all u n vanish. This generalizes earlier results for N = 2 in terms of hypergeometric functions, and for N = 3 in terms of Appell functions. Using these and other analytical results, combined with numerical computations, we explore the global structure of the Kähler potential K = $$ \frac{1}{2}{\sum}_I $$ 1 2 ∑ I Im( $$ \overline{a} $$ a ¯ I a DI ), which is single valued on the Coulomb branch. Evidence is presented that K is a convex function, with a unique minimum at the ℤ 2 N -symmetric point. Finally, we explore candidate walls of marginal stability in the vicinity of this point, and their relation to the surface of vanishing Kähler potential.

A bstract New renormalisation group flows of three-dimensional Chern-Simons theories with a single gauge group SU( N ) and adjoint matter are found holographically. These RG flows have an infrared fixed point given by a CFT with $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 3 supersymmetry and SU(2) flavour symmetry. The ultraviolet fixed point is again described by a CFT with either $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 2 and SU(3) symmetry or $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 1 and G 2 symmetry. The gauge/gravity duals of these RG flows are constructed as domain-wall solutions of a gauged supergravity model in four dimensions that enjoys an embedding into massive IIA supergravity. A concrete RG flow that brings a mass deformation of the $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 2 CFT into the $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 3 CFT at low energies is described in detail.

  3. A bstract In flux compactifications of type IIB string theory with D3 and seven-branes, the negative induced D3 charge localized on seven-branes leads to an apparently pathological profile of the metric sufficiently close to the source. With the volume modulus stabilized in a KKLT de Sitter vacuum this pathological region takes over a significant part of the entire compactification, threatening to spoil the KKLT effective field theory. In this paper we employ the Seiberg-Witten solution of pure SU( N ) super Yang-Mills theory to argue that wrapped seven-branes can be thought of as bound states of more microscopic exotic branes. We argue that the low-energy worldvolume dynamics of a stack of n such exotic branes is given by the ( A 1 , A n− 1 ) Argyres-Douglas theory. Moreover, the splitting of the perturbative (in α ′) seven-brane into its constituent branes at the non-perturbative level resolves the apparently pathological region close to the seven-brane and replaces it with a region of $$ \mathcal{O} $$ O (1) Einstein frame volume. While this region generically takes up an $$ \mathcal{O} $$ O (1) fraction of the compactification in a KKLT de Sitter vacuum we argue that a small flux superpotential dynamically ensures that the 4d effective field theory of KKLT remains valid nevertheless.

  4. A bstract The mass spectrum of 1 + 1-dimensional SU( N ) gauge theory coupled to a Majorana fermion in the adjoint representation has been studied in the large N limit using Light-Cone Quantization. Here we extend this approach to theories with small values of N , exhibiting explicit results for N = 2 , 3, and 4. In the context of Discretized Light-Cone Quantization, we develop a procedure based on the Cayley-Hamilton theorem for determining which states of the large N theory become null at finite N . For the low-lying bound states, we find that the squared masses divided by g 2 N , where g is the gauge coupling, have very weak dependence on N . The coefficients of the 1 /N 2 corrections to their large N values are surprisingly small. When the adjoint fermion is massless, we observe exact degeneracies that we explain in terms of a Kac-Moody algebra construction and charge conjugation symmetry. When the squared mass of the adjoint fermion is tuned to g 2 N/π , we find evidence that the spectrum exhibits boson-fermion degeneracies, in agreement with the supersymmetry of the model at any value of N .

Recently there has been a notable progress in the study of glueball states in lattice gauge theories, in particular extrapolating their spectrum to the limit of large number of colorsN. In this note we compare the largeNlattice results with the holographic predictions, focusing on the Klebanov-Strassler model, which describes a gauge theory with$$ \mathcal{N} $$N= 1 supersymmetry. We note that glueball spectrum demonstrates approximate universality across a range of gauge theory models. Because of this universality the holographic models can give reliable predictions for the spectrum of pure SU(N) Yang-Mills theories with and without supersymmetry. This is especially important for the supersymmetric theories, for which no firm lattice predictions exist yet, and the holographic models remain the most tractable approach. For SU(N) theories with largeNthe lattice non-supersymmetric and holographic supersymmetric predictions for the mass ratios of the lightest states in various sectors agree up to 5–8%, supporting the proposed universality. In particular, both lattice and holography give predictions for the 2++and 1−−mass ratio, consistent with the known constraints on the pomeron and odderon Regge trajectories.
