Title: Using Enhanced Professional Networks to Increase Overall Student Retention
The National Science Foundation awarded funds in 2016 through the Division of Undergraduate Engineering in an S-STEM program to investigate a connection between student support networks and success within STEM fields in higher education. A Web of Support characterization model, based upon work with indigenous populations, was modified using these ‘network’ predictors of success for discrimination at the collegiate matriculation point. Promising students with low socio-economic status that successfully passed screening by the modified admissions process were then interviewed by a committee of academic professionals. If selected for participation in the Rising Scholars program, students were provided with an annual $6,500 four-year scholarship. Students had to agree to follow the program guidelines and provide data to the researchers. The Rising Scholars program was designed to be a ‘high-touch’ path through the undergraduate academic world that incorporated several known best practices in higher education. Incoming Rising Scholar students were matched with students receiving both direct engineering admits and exploratory studies admits that had similar background and academic indicators that matched the Rising Scholar’s profile. First year retention for students in engineering and the Rising Scholars program was significantly better than for exploratory studies. Those trends remained in the second-year data. Rising Scholars have significantly better GPAs moving into their second year, compared to both engineers and exploratory studies students. The significance in GPA over engineering students continues into the second year. These positive results indicate that it would likely be advantageous to transition this program to a multi-university project to more effectively demonstrate the robustness of the process for Rising Scholar students.  more » « less

The National Science Foundation established the Rising Scholars program at Purdue University to promote the cultivation of professional mentor support networks for qualified low socio-economic students in STEM fields. In collaboration between the Agricultural and Biological Engineering Department and the Minority Engineering Program, Rising Scholars students, in three cadres of 21 students total, were recruited from general admissions to the institution, who had previously expressed an initial desire for engineering. These students were provided with a defined path of activities in college designed to enhance their professional mentoring networks among STEM specialists. Rising Scholars students were provided with a partial scholarship and intensive academic guidance. These students participated in multiple networking and social activities sponsored by the program administrators. Academic results for the Rising Scholars students against their matched pair grouping for graduation rate and GPA will be presented. Students who socialized well and developed stronger social networks within the high-touch, student-centric environment fared better academically and outperformed their matched pair direct-to-engineering admits to the university. Small-to-moderate sized academic engineering departments are well-suited to provide a similar nurturing culture for support and belonging that can help all students succeed.

  2. This study examined the impact of a National Science Foundation-funded support program for academically promising STEM students from low-income backgrounds. The program operates as a collaborative consortium, bringing together three public community colleges and one private university, to support the retention and graduation of program scholars. Using propensity score matching, we compared 169 program scholars to 169 matched non-scholars with similar demographic, academic, and financial characteristics ( Mage = 24.82 years; 41% female; 60% students of color). Participation in the program was associated with favorable academic outcomes, with large to moderate effect sizes. Specifically, program scholars had significantly higher cumulative and STEM-specific grade point averages than their non-scholar counterparts. They also completed significantly more STEM courses and were less likely to withdraw from college than non-scholars. These findings underscore the potential of comprehensive and equity-oriented approaches to STEM education in facilitating academic success for STEM students, particularly those from low-income backgrounds.

  3. Eastern Mennonite University received a 5-year S-STEM award for their STEM Scholars Engaging in Local Problems (SSELP) program. The goal of this place-based, interdisciplinary scholarship program is to increase the number of academically talented, low-income students who graduate in STEM fields and either pursue immediate employment in STEM careers or STEM-related service or continue their STEM education in graduate school. In 2018 and 2019, two cohorts of seven students were recruited to major in biology, chemistry, engineering, computer science, mathematics, or environmental science. A key part of recruitment involved on-campus interviews, during a February Scholarship Day, between STEM faculty and potential scholars. As the yield rate for the event is high (54-66%), the university has continued this practice, funding additional STEM scholarships. In order to retain and graduate the scholars in STEM fields, the SSELP faculty designed and carried out various projects and activities to support the students. The SSELP Scholars participated in a first-year STEM Career Practicum class, a one-credit course that connected students with regional STEM practitioners across a variety of fields. The scholars were supported by peer tutors embedded in STEM classes, and now many are tutors themselves. They participated in collaborative projects where the cohorts worked to identify and solve a problem or need in their community. The SSELP scholars were supported by both faculty and peer mentors. Each scholarship recipient was matched with a faculty mentor in addition to an academic advisor. A faculty mentor was in a related STEM field but typically not teaching the student. Each scholar was matched with a peer mentor (junior or senior) in their intended major of study. In addition, community building activities were implemented to provide a significant framework for interaction within the cohort. To evaluate the progress of the SSELP program, multiple surveys were conducted. HERI/CIRP Freshman Survey was used in the fall of 2018 for the first cohort and 2019 for the second cohort. The survey indicated an upward shift in students’ perception of science and in making collaborative effort towards positive change. Preliminary data on the Science Motivation Questionnaire showed that the SSELP scholars began their university studies with lower averages than their non-SSELP STEM peers in almost every area of science motivation. After over three years of implementation of the NSF-funded STEM Scholars Engaging in Local Problems program, the recruitment effort has grown significantly in STEM fields in the university. Within the two cohorts, the most common majors were environmental science and engineering. While 100% of Cohorts 1 and 2 students were retained into the Fall semester of the second year, two students from Cohort 1 left the program between the third and fourth semesters of their studies. While one student from Cohort 2 had a leave of absence, they have returned to continue their studies. The support system formed among the SSELP scholars and between the scholars and faculty has benefited the students in both their academic achievement as well as their personal growth.

The Rising Scholars program was established by the National Science Foundation to promote the matriculation and retention of qualified low socio-economic students into STEM fields through the cultivation of their mentor support networks. Rising Scholars students were provided with a scholarship and had a defined path of activities in college designed to enhance their professional mentoring network. They were prearranged to participate in a pre-freshman academic bootcamp, an on-going faculty-directed research project, a self-directed research project, and an internship. Students attended seminars and produced written reflections of their various individual experiences on the path to a professional career. Three cadres of 21 students total, who had expressed a previous interest in engineering, were admitted to a general studies program and provided intensive guidance and an active social group. The Rising Scholars students were successful overall at remaining in a STEM discipline, but their path through college also intersected with the COVID pandemic. These results indicated that strongly supported students faired the social disruption better than their less well supported colleagues. Academic results for the Rising Scholars students against their matched pair grouping for graduation rate and GPA will be presented. Several students interviewed after graduation all professed that they believe they would not have graduated from Purdue and probably would not have attended in the first place. In turn, they would not have their current positions without the Rising Scholars Program.

The National Science Foundation established the Rising Scholars program to demonstrate how the cultivation of mentor support networks could promote the matriculation and retention of qualified low socio-economic students into STEM fields. Rising Scholars students are those individuals with low socio-economic status that have distinguished themselves academically in secondary education and wish to move into a collegiate STEM major. The overarching goal of this NSF S-STEM effort was to determine if professional-based mentors could help an individual make-up for a lack of ‘institutional’ collegiate knowledge within their own family and friends. Under this program, twenty-one incoming exploratory studies students, across three years, who had expressed an interest in engineering were provided with a defined path of social and professional activities in college, where they engaged in numerous experiential activities, including on-campus research and internships. The overall goal of this defined path was to introduce the students to potential mentors within technical fields, who might later assist the students with their own careers. Rising Scholars students were sent to the Minority Engineering Program’s Academic Boot Camp, prior to entering school as freshmen, and they were scheduled for annual seminars and continuing social events to provide group cohesiveness. While many elements of keeping the students on the designated path where they could co-mingle with potential mentors was difficult, finding paid work experience for the students was particularly challenging. COVID-19 negatively affected the ability of these students to find professional employment, but some of students truly excelled in collegiate Professional Practice. Anecdotal experiences and data from employment-based activity of the Rising Scholars program are presented. Some students from the program remain actively working toward completing college, but to-date graduation and entry-level employment data are provided.
