Abstract A study of the Higgs boson decaying into bottom quarks (H→$$ b\overline{b} $$ ) and charm quarks (H→$$ c\overline{c} $$ ) is performed, in the associated production channel of the Higgs boson with aWorZboson, using 140 fb−1of proton-proton collision data at$$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector. The individual production ofWHandZHwithH→$$ b\overline{b} $$ is established with observed (expected) significances of 5.3 (5.5) and 4.9 (5.6) standard deviations, respectively. Differential cross-section measurements of the gauge boson transverse momentum within the simplified template cross-section framework are performed in a total of 13 kinematical fiducial regions. The search for theH→$$ c\overline{c} $$ decay yields an observed (expected) upper limit at 95% confidence level of 11.5 (10.6) times the Standard Model prediction. The results are also used to set constraints on the charm coupling modifier, resulting in|κc| <4.2 at 95% confidence level. Combining theH→$$ b\overline{b} $$ andH→$$ c\overline{c} $$ measurements constrains the absolute value of the ratio of Higgs-charm and Higgs-bottom coupling modifiers (|κc/κb|) to be less than 3.6 at 95% confidence level.

Unsupervised machine learning reveals slab hydration variations from deep earthquake distributions beneath the northwest Pacific
Abstract Although transformational faulting in the rim of the metastable olivine wedge is hypothesized as a triggering mechanism of deep-focus earthquakes, there is no direct evidence of such rim. Variations of thebvalue – slope of the Gutenberg-Richter distribution – have been used to decipher triggering and rupture mechanisms of deep earthquakes. However, detection limits prevent full understanding of these mechanisms. Using the Japan Meteorological Agency catalog, we estimatebvalues of deep earthquakes in the northwestern Pacific Plate, clustered in four regions with unsupervised machine learning. Theb-value analysis of Honshu and Izu deep seismicity reveals a kink at magnitude 3.7–3.8, where thebvalue abruptly changes from 1.4–1.7 to 0.6–0.7. The anomalously highbvalues for small earthquakes highlight enhanced transformational faulting, likely catalyzed by deep hydrous defects coinciding with the unstable rim of the metastable olivine wedge, the thickness of which we estimate at$$\sim$$ 1 km.

Abstract We report the first measurement of the inclusivee+e−→$$ b\overline{b} $$ →$$ {D}_s^{\pm } $$ Xande+e−→$$ b\overline{b} $$ → D0/$$ {\overline{D}}^0 $$ Xcross sections in the energy range from 10.63 to 11.02 GeV. Based on these results, we determineσ(e+e−→$$ {B}_s^0{\overline{B}}_s^0 $$ X) andσ(e+e−→$$ B\overline{B} $$ X) in the same energy range. We measure the fraction of$$ {B}_s^0 $$ events at Υ(10860) to befs= ($$ {22.0}_{-2.1}^{+2.0} $$ )%. We determine also the ratio of the$$ {B}_s^0 $$ inclusive branching fractions$$ \mathcal{B} $$ ($$ {B}_s^0 $$ → D0/$$ {\overline{D}}^0 $$ X)/$$ \mathcal{B} $$ ($$ {B}_s^0 $$ →$$ {D}_s^{\pm } $$ X) = 0.416 ± 0.018 ± 0.092. The results are obtained using the data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energye+e−collider.more » « less

Abstract The effective lifetime of the$$ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $$ meson in the decay$$ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0\to \textrm{J}/{\uppsi \textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$ is measured using data collected during 2016–2018 with the CMS detector in$$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV proton-proton collisions at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb−1. The effective lifetime is determined by performing a two-dimensional unbinned maximum likelihood fit to the$$ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $$ meson invariant mass and proper decay time distributions. The resulting value of 1.59 ± 0.07(stat) ± 0.03(syst) ps is the most precise measurement to date and is in good agreement with the expected value.more » « less

Abstract We report measurements of thee+e−→$$ B\overline{B} $$ ,$$ B{\overline{B}}^{\ast } $$ , and$$ {B}^{\ast }{\overline{B}}^{\ast } $$ cross sections at four energies, 10653, 10701, 10746 and 10805 MeV, using data collected by the Belle II experiment. We reconstruct oneBmeson in a large number of hadronic final states and use its momentum to identify the production process. In the first 2 – 5 MeV above$$ {B}^{\ast }{\overline{B}}^{\ast } $$ threshold, thee+e−→$$ {B}^{\ast }{\overline{B}}^{\ast } $$ cross section increases rapidly. This may indicate the presence of a pole close to the threshold.more » « less

Abstract This paper presents a search for dark matter,$$\chi $$ , using events with a single top quark and an energeticWboson. The analysis is based on proton–proton collision data collected with the ATLAS experiment at$$\sqrt{s}=$$ 13 TeV during LHC Run 2 (2015–2018), corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb$$^{-1}$$ . The search considers final states with zero or one charged lepton (electron or muon), at least oneb-jet and large missing transverse momentum. In addition, a result from a previous search considering two-charged-lepton final states is included in the interpretation of the results. The data are found to be in good agreement with the Standard Model predictions and the results are interpreted in terms of 95% confidence-level exclusion limits in the context of a class of dark matter models involving an extended two-Higgs-doublet sector together with a pseudoscalar mediator particle. The search is particularly sensitive to on-shell production of the charged Higgs boson state,$$H^{\pm }$$ , arising from the two-Higgs-doublet mixing, and its semi-invisible decays via the mediator particle,a:$$H^{\pm } \rightarrow W^\pm a (\rightarrow \chi \chi )$$ . Signal models with$$H^{\pm }$$ masses up to 1.5 TeV andamasses up to 350 GeV are excluded assuming a$$\tan \beta $$ value of 1. For masses ofaof 150 (250) GeV,$$\tan \beta $$ values up to 2 are excluded for$$H^{\pm }$$ masses between 200 (400) GeV and 1.5 TeV. Signals with$$\tan \beta $$ values between 20 and 30 are excluded for$$H^{\pm }$$ masses between 500 and 800 GeV.more » « less
