The wavefronts emerging from phase gradient metasurfaces are typically sensitive to incident beam properties such as angle, wavelength, or polarization. While this sensitivity can result in undesired wavefront aberrations, it can also be exploited to construct multifunctional devices which dynamically vary their behavior in response to tuning a specified degree of freedom. Here, we show how incident beam tilt in a one dimensional metalens naturally offers a means for changing functionality between diffraction limited focusing and the generation of non-paraxial accelerating light beams. This attractively offers enhanced control over accelerating beam characteristics in a simple and compact form factor.

Optical control of light polarization in heliconical cholesteric liquid crystals
We show here that light polarization of a beam propagating through a heliconical cholesteric cell can be controlled by tuning the Bragg resonance of the structure. We demonstrate that this control is achieved by varying either the low-frequency electric field or the intensity of a pump beam impinging on the sample. The study confirms the recently reported phenomenon of optical tuning of the heliconical cholesterics and opens the door for the development of simple and efficient polarization modulators controlled electrically or optically.

null (Ed.)Metamaterials represent a class of artificially engineered materials, which exhibit unprecedented properties enabled by their constituent subwavelength unit cells. The effective properties of metamaterials may be dynamically controlled by driving unit cells via different approaches, including photo-doping, electrical gating, or mechanical actuation. With such dynamical tuning mechanisms, the propagation modality of electromagnetic waves may be modulated to achieve functional devices for modulation, beam steering, focusing, and polarization control, among others. In addition, the perfect absorption and near field effect enabled by metamaterials may be used in electromagnetic detectors across the frequency spectrum. Microsystem technology provides a platform to achieve functional metamaterial devices by covering all requisite processes, including fabrication, packaging, and system integration. We report our progress in constructing functional devices by integrating metamaterials with microsystems technology and discuss remaining challenges and the future direction of metamaterial devices.more » « less

Abstract This work investigates the polarization state of light diffracted from uncoated and gold‐coated InP nanowire photonic crystal arrays grown by selective area epitaxy. Experimental data and finite‐difference time‐domain simulations show that both the intensity and the ellipticity of the polarization state of the diffracted light beam can be controlled by the nanowire dimensions and gold coating, while the diffracted angle remains unchanged with respect to variations of these parameters. A nominally 10 nm‐thick gold film deposited around the nanowires enhances the diffraction intensity by plasmonic effects. These results demonstrate that the controlled conversion of incident linearly polarized light to circularly polarized or rotated linearly polarized diffracted light can find applications in photonic integrated circuits. The high sensitivity of the polarization state with respect to alterations of the nanowire dimension opens new prospects in the areas of semiconductor metrology and microchip inspection as well as for submicron particle detection.more » « less

Abstract Germanium selenide (GeSe) is a 2D layered material with an anisotropic crystal structure analogous to black phosphorus (BP). But unlike BP, GeSe is stable under ambient conditions and therefore provides more flexibility in building practical nanoscale devices. The in‐plane anisotropic vibrational, electrical, and optical properties of layered GeSe originating from the low symmetry of its crystal structure are being explored mostly for building polarization‐sensitive optoelectronic devices. However, the nonlinear optical properties of layered GeSe have not been investigated yet. Here, the anisotropic polarization‐dependent third‐harmonic generation (THG) from exfoliated thin GeSe flakes due to the low in‐plane lattice symmetry is reported. Furthermore, it is also shown that the intensity and polarization state of TH emission can be controlled by the polarization state of pump beam. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the crystal's symmetry axes can be rapidly determined by characterizing the intensity profile of TH emission upon the excitation from radially or azimuthally polarized vector beam. The results of this study pave the way for realizing anisotropic nonlinear optical devices such as multiplexers, signal processors, and other prototypes for future on‐chip photonic circuits and optical information processing.more » « less

Abstract Metasurfaces composed of in‐plane subwavelength nanostructures have unprecedented capability in manipulating the amplitude, phase, and polarization states of light. Here, a unique type of direction‐controlled bifunctional metasurface polarizer is proposed and experimentally demonstrated based on plasmonic stepped slit‐groove dimers. In the forward direction, a chiral linear polarizer is enabled which only allows the transmission of a certain incident handedness and converts it into the specified linear polarization. In the backward direction, the metasurface functions as an anisotropic circular polarizer to selectively convert a certain linear polarization component into the desired circularly polarized transmission. The observed direction‐controlled polarization selection and conversion are explained by the spin‐dependent mode coupling process inside the bilayer structure. Anisotropic chiral imaging based on the proposed metasurface polarizer is further demonstrated. The results provide new degrees of freedom to realize future multifunctional photonic integrated devices for structured light conversion, vector beam generation, optical imaging and sensing, and optical communication.more » « less
