Title: Synthesis and Optical Properties of Fluorinated Tetraphenylethylenes**
Abstract

Four extensively fluorinated tetraphenylethylenes (TPE) and one extensively fluorinated triphenylethylene have been synthesized using combinations of copper‐catalyzed C−H functionalization reactions and Stille coupling reactions. Surprisingly, in contrast to the parent TPE, these compounds show little to no aggregation‐induced emission (AIE). Instead, photocyclization into fluorinated phenanthrene products occurs. Effects of solvent and oxygen on the yield and selectivity of this photocyclization have been examined.

The solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) has been identified as a key challenge for Li metal anodes. The brittle and inhomogeneous native SEI generated by parasitic reactions between Li and liquid electrolytes can devastate battery performance; therefore, artificial SEIs (ASEIs) have been proposed as an effective strategy to replace native SEIs. Herein, as a collaboration between academia and industrial R&D teams, a multifunctional (crystalline, high modulus, and robust, Li+ion conductive, electrolyte‐blocking, and solution processable) ASEI material, LiAl‐FBD (where “FBD” refers to 2,2,3,3‐tetrafluoro‐1,4‐butanediol), for improving Li metal battery performance is designed and synthesized. The LiAl‐FBD crystal structure consists of Al3+ions bridged by FBD2–ligands to form anion clusters while Li+ions are loosely bound at the periphery, enabling an Li+ion conductivity of 9.4 × 10–6S cm–1. The fluorinated, short ligands endow LiAl‐FBD with electrolyte phobicity and high modulus. The ASEI is found to prevent side reactions and extend the cycle life of Li metal electrodes. Specifically, pairing LiAl‐FBD coated 50 µm thick Li with industrial 3.5 mAh cm–2NMC811 cathode and 2.8 µL mAh–1lean electrolyte, the Li metal full cells show superior cycle life compared to bare ones, achieving 250 cycles at 1 mA cm–2.

  2. Abstract

Although lithium-ion batteries have transformed energy storage, there is a need to develop battery technologies with improved performance. Fluoride-ion batteries (FIBs) may be promising alternatives in part due to their high theoretical energy density and natural elemental abundance. However, electrode materials for FIBs, particularly cathodes, have not been systematically evaluated, limiting rapid progress. Here, we evaluate ternary fluorides from the Materials Project crystal structure database to identify promising cathode materials for FIBs. Structures are further assessed based on stability and whether fluorination/defluorination occurs without unwanted disproportionation reactions. Properties are presented for pairs of fluorinated/defluorinated materials including theoretical energy densities, cost approximations, and bandgaps. We aim to supply a dataset for extracting property and structural trends of ternary fluoride materials that may aid in the discovery of next-generation battery materials.

  3. Reactions of [Re(NPhF)Cl 3 (PPh 3 ) 2 ] ({NPhF} 2− = p -fluorophenylimide) with a variety of alkyl and aryl isocyanides have been studied. Different reactivity patterns and products have been obtained depending on the steric and electronic properties of the individual ligands. This involves the formation of 1 : 1 and 1 : 2 exchange products of Re( v ) with the general formulae mer -[Re(NPhF)Cl 3 (PPh 3 )(isocyanide)] and cis - or trans -[Re(NPhF)Cl 3 (isocyanide) 2 ]. The stability of the obtained products is correlated with the substitution pattern of the isocyanide ligands. The products have been studied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and spectroscopic methods, including IR and multinuclear NMR spectroscopy as well as mass spectrometry. The use of partially fluorinated starting materials and ligands allows the modulation of the solubilities of the starting materials and the products as well as the monitoring of the reactions by means of 19 F NMR. The attachment of the CF 3 or F substituent on the isocyanides gives control over the steric bulk and the electronic properties of the ligands and, thus, their reactivity.

  4. Abstract

Through continuous efforts in developing a new class of foldamers, homogeneous sulfono‐γ‐AApeptides have been designed and synthesized using tetraphenylethylene (TPE) moieties attached to the backbone as luminogenic sidechains. Based on previous crystal structures, it is found that these foldamers adopted a left‐handed 414‐helix. Due to the constraint of the helical scaffold, the rotation of the TPE moieties is restricted, leading to fluorescent emissive properties with high quantum yields not only at the aggregate state but also in solution. Investigation of the relationship between the structure and fluorescence behavior reveals that emission is induced by the combined effect of the aggregation‐induced emission and the rotated restriction from the backbone. Furthermore, as the packing mode of the luminogens can be precisely adjusted by the helical backbone, these foldamers are found to be circularly polarizable with relatively large luminescence dissymmetry factor. Interestingly, possessing cationic amphipathic structures similar to that of host‐defense peptides, these sulfono‐γ‐AApeptides are able to inhibit the growth of Gram‐positive bacteria, methicillin‐resistantStaphylococcus aureusthrough membrane interactions.

  5. Abstract

Plasmon‐mediated carrier transfer (PMCT) at metal–semiconductor heterojunctions has been extensively exploited to drive photochemical reactions, offering intriguing opportunities for solar photocatalysis. However, to date, most studies have been conducted using noble metals. Inexpensive materials capable of generating and transferring hot carriers for photocatalysis via PMCT have been rarely explored. Here, we demonstrate that the plasmon excitation of nickel induces the transfer of both hot electrons and holes from Ni to TiO2in a rationally designed Ni–TiO2heterostructure. Furthermore, it is discovered that the transferred hot electrons either occupy oxygen vacancies (VO) or produce Ti3+on TiO2, while the transferred hot holes are located on surface oxygens at TiO2. Moreover, the transferred hot electrons are identified to play a primary role in driving the degradation of methylene blue (MB). Taken together, our results validate Ni as a promising low‐cost plasmonic material for prompting visible‐light photochemical reactions.
