Title: Precipitation data from a standard can rain gauge at the LTER weather station, Jornada Basin, southern New Mexico, USA, 1992-ongoing
{"Abstract":["This data package contains precipitation measurements collected from\n a "dipstick" rain gauge (NOAA standard can type) at the\n LTER Weather Station in the Jornada Basin, southern New Mexico, USA.\n The primary purpose of this data set is to validate the LTER Weather\n Station tipping bucket rain gauge data. The dipstick rain gauge\n (DSRG) data is measured at least weekly during scheduled maintenance\n trips to the LTER Weather Station to maintain the evaporation pan\n water levels. During the summer months this may be twice a week.\n Additionally, DSRG data is collected after any rain event that\n requires the collection of the Wetfall/Dryfall precipitation buckets\n which are located about 10 meters from the DSRG. This is usually any\n amount greater than 0.02 inches. DSRG data is also collected after\n very small events when personnel are in the vicinity.   3. Dataset Abstract Meteorological data have been collected on the LTER main site since 1988. Originally, wind direction and speed, total solar radiation, net solar radiation, rainfall, air temperature, and relative humidity were recorded hourly in connection with measurements of evapotranspiration and deep percolation from a 6 m2 in-ground weighing lysimeter. The lysimeter and fetch area were planted to continuous alfalfa. Although the lysimeter is no longer in operation, weather data collection continues. Precipitation was measured with a tipping bucket rain gauge until fall of 1997, when it was replaced with a weighing bucket rain gauge. In 2007 the belford rain gauge was replaced by a NOAH IV weighing bucket gage. All other sensors are electronic, connected to a data logger that is polled remotely. Instruments to measure wind speed and direction are mounted on a tower at 10 m. Light sensors (net solar radiation and photosynthetically active radiation) a thermometer, and an RH probe (with a built-in thermometer) are mounted at about 3 m. This is recorded at an automated meteorological station installed at Jornada LTER NPP M-WELL site.. This climate station is operated by the Jornada LTER Program. IMPORTANT: Rainfall is only recorded when a bucket tip occurs on the tipping bucket rain gauge. If there is missing data due to equipment or other problems, there will be no indication of this within this dataset. The user needs to review precipitation values in the 30 minute or hourly summary datasets to determine if there are missing data in this 1 second detailed precipitation dataset. Reference the package i.d.'s knb-lter-jrn.210437024, knb-lter-jrn.210437039, and knb-lter-jrn.210437054 for the NPP M-WELL met station 30 minute, hourly, and daily summary datasets, respectively. This is an ONGOING dataset.
