Title: The 2021 release of the Quantemol database (QDB) of plasma chemistries and reactions
Abstract

The Quantemol database (QDB) provides cross sections and rates of processes important for plasma models; heavy particle collisions (chemical reactions) and electron collision processes are considered. The current version of QDB has data on 28 917 processes between 2485 distinct species plus data for surface processes. These data are available via a web interface or can be delivered directly to plasma models using an application program interface; data are available in formats suitable for direct input into a variety of popular plasma modeling codes including HPEM, COMSOL, ChemKIN, CFD-ACE+, and VisGlow. QDB provides ready assembled plasma chemistries plus the ability to build bespoke chemistries. The database also provides a Boltzmann solver for electron dynamics and a zero-dimensional model. Thesedevelopments, use cases involving O2, Ar/NF3, Ar/NF3/O2, and He/H2O/O2chemistries, and plans for the future are presented.

  1. Abstract

Ozone, O3, is a strong oxidizing agent often used for water purification. O3is typically produced in dielectric barrier discharges (DBDs) by electron-impact dissociation of O2, followed by three-body association reactions between O and O2. Previous studies on O3formation in low-temperature plasma DBDs have shown that O3concentrations can drop to nearly zero after continued operation, termed the ozone-zero phenomenon (OZP). Including small (<4%) admixtures of N2can suppress this phenomenon and increase the O3production relative to using pure O2in spite of power deposition being diverted from O2to N2and the production of nitrogen oxides, NxOy. The OZP is hypothesized to occur because O3is destroyed on the surfaces in contact with the plasma. Including N2in the gas mixture enables N atoms to occupy surface sites that would otherwise participate in O3destruction. The effect of N2in ozone-producing DBDs was computationally investigated using a global plasma chemistry model. A general surface reaction mechanism is proposed to explain the increase in O3production with N2admixtures. The mechanism includes O3formation and destruction on the surfaces, adsorption and recombination of O and N, desorption of O2and N2, and NOxreactions. Without these reactions on the surface, the density of O3monotonically decreases with increasing N2admixture due to power absorption by N2leading to the formation of nitrogen oxides. With N-based surface chemistry, the concentrations of O3are maximum with a few tenths of percent of N2depending on the O3destruction probability on the surface. The consequences of the surface chemistry on ozone production are less than the effect of gas temperature without surface processes. An increase in the O3density with N-based surface chemistry occurs when the surface destruction probability of O3or the surface roughness was decreased.

  2. Abstract

Low- and intermediate-mass (0.8M<M< 8M) stars that evolve into planetary nebulae (PNe) play an important role in tracing and driving Galactic chemical evolution. Spectroscopy of PNe enables access to both the initial composition of their progenitor stars and products of their internal nucleosynthesis, but determining accurate ionic and elemental abundances of PNe requires high-quality optical spectra. We obtained new optical spectra of eight highly-extincted PNe with limited optical data in the literature using the Low Resolution Spectrograph 2 on the Hobby–Eberly Telescope. Extinction coefficients, electron temperatures and densities, and ionic and elemental abundances of up to 11 elements (He, N, O, Ne, S, Cl, Ar, K, Fe, Kr, and Xe) are determined for each object in our sample. Where available, astrometric data from Gaia eDR3 is used to kinematically characterize the probability that each object belongs to the Milky Way's thin disk, thick disk, or halo. Four of the PNe show kinematic and chemical signs of thin disk membership, while two may be members of the thick disk. The remaining two targets lack Gaia data, but their solar O, Ar, and Cl abundances suggest thin disk membership. Additionally, we report the detection of broad emission features from the central star of M 3–35. Our results significantly improve the available information on the nebular parameters and chemical compositions of these objects, which can inform future analyses.

  3. Abstract

In this paper, we report a molecular beam mass spectrometer study of a time‐modulated radiofrequency (RF)‐driven atmospheric pressure plasma jet in Ar + 1% O2. Time‐resolved measurements of the absolute density of O3during the RF modulation period revealed a temporal increase of O3densities at the start and end of the power modulation. This increase correlates with the increase in O2due to plasma‐induced transient vortices in the gas jet. Pseudo‐one‐dimensional plug flow modeling of the axial species densities as a function of distance match well with the experimentally recorded trends. The obtained results were used to assess the importance of the O flux in previously reported ClOproduction in saline by the same plasma jet.

The current understanding of the carbonation and the prediction of the carbonation rate of alkali-activated concretes is complicatedinter aliaby the wide range of binder chemistries used and testing conditions adopted. To overcome some of the limitations of individual studies and to identify general correlations between mix design parameters and carbonation resistance, the RILEM TC 281-CCC ‘Carbonation of Concrete with Supplementary Cementitious Materials’ Working Group 6 compiled and analysed carbonation data for alkali-activated concretes and mortars from the literature. For comparison purposes, data for blended Portland cement-based concretes with a high percentage of SCMs (≥ 66% of the binder) were also included in the database. The analysis indicates that water/CaO ratio and water/binder ratio exert an influence on the carbonation resistance of alkali-activated concretes; however, these parameters are not good indicators of the carbonation resistance when considered individually. A better indicator of the carbonation resistance of alkali-activated concretes under conditions approximating natural carbonation appears to be their water/(CaO + MgOeq + Na2Oeq + K2Oeq) ratio, where the subscript ‘eq’ indicates an equivalent amount based on molar masses. Nevertheless, this ratio can serve as approximate indicator at best, as other parameters also affect the carbonation resistance of alkali-activated concretes. In addition, the analysis of the database points to peculiarities of accelerated tests using elevated CO2concentrations for low-Ca alkali-activated concretes, indicating that even at the relatively modest concentration of 1% CO2, accelerated testing may lead to inaccurate predictions of the carbonation resistance under natural exposure conditions.

  5. Abstract

A local electric field is induced to engineer the interface of vanadium pentoxide nanofibers (V2O5‐NF) to manipulate the charge transport behavior and obtain high‐energy and durable supercapacitors. The interface of V2O5‐NF is modified with oxygen vacancies (Vö) in a one‐step polymerization process of polyaniline (PANI). In the charge storage process, the local electric field deriving from the lopsided charge distribution around Vö will provide Coulombic forces to promote the charge transport in the resultant Vö‐V2O5/PANI nanocable electrode. Furthermore, an ≈7 nm porous PANI coating serves as the external percolated charge transport pathway. As the charge transfer kinetics are synergistically enhanced by the dual modifications, Vö‐V2O5/PANI‐based supercapacitors exhibit an excellent specific capacitance (523 F g−1) as well as a long cycling lifespan (110% of capacitance remained after 20 000 cycles). This work paves an effective way to promote the charge transfer kinetics of electrode materials for next‐generation energy storage systems.
