Title: High-throughput screening of hypothetical metal-organic frameworks for thermal conductivity
Abstract

Thermal energy management in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is an important, yet often neglected, challenge for many adsorption-based applications such as gas storage and separations. Despite its importance, there is insufficient understanding of the structure-property relationships governing thermal transport in MOFs. To provide a data-driven perspective into these relationships, here we perform large-scale computational screening of thermal conductivitykin MOFs, leveraging classical molecular dynamics simulations and 10,194 hypothetical MOFs created using the ToBaCCo 3.0 code. We found that high thermal conductivity in MOFs is favored by high densities (> 1.0 g cm−3), small pores (< 10 Å), and four-connected metal nodes. We also found that 36 MOFs exhibit ultra-low thermal conductivity (< 0.02 W m−1 K−1), which is primarily due to having extremely large pores (~65 Å). Furthermore, we discovered six hypothetical MOFs with very high thermal conductivity (> 10 W m−1 K−1), the structures of which we describe in additional detail.

The emergence of conductive 2D and less commonly 3D coordination polymers (CPs) and metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) promises novel applications in many fields. However, the synthetic parameters for these electronically complex materials are not thoroughly understood. Here we report a new 3D semiconducting CPFe5(C6O6)3, which is a fusion of 2D Fe‐semiquinoid materials and 3D cubicFex(C6O6)ymaterials, by using a different initial redox‐state of the C6O6linker. The material displays high electrical conductivity (0.02 S cm−1), broad electronic transitions, promising thermoelectric behavior (S2σ=7.0×10−9 W m−1 K−2), and strong antiferromagnetic interactions at room temperature. This material illustrates how controlling the oxidation states of redox‐active components in conducting CPs/MOFs can be a “pre‐synthetic” strategy to carefully tune material topologies and properties in contrast to more commonly encountered post‐synthetic modifications.

An emerging chalcogenide perovskite, CaZrSe3, holds promise for energy conversion applications given its notable optical and electrical properties. However, knowledge of its thermal properties is extremely important, e.g. for potential thermoelectric applications, and has not been previously reported in detail. In this work, we examine and explain the lattice thermal transport mechanisms in CaZrSe3using density functional theory and Boltzmann transport calculations. We find the mean relaxation time to be extremely short corroborating an enhanced phonon–phonon scattering that annihilates phonon modes, and lowers thermal conductivity. In addition, strong anharmonicity in the perovskite crystal represented by the Grüneisen parameter predictions, and low phonon number density for the acoustic modes, results in the lattice thermal conductivity to be limited to 1.17 W m−1 K−1. The average phonon mean free path in the bulk CaZrSe3sample (N → ∞) is 138.1 nm and nanostructuring CaZrSe3sample to ~10 nm diminishes the thermal conductivity to 0.23 W m−1 K−1. We also find that p-type doping yields higher predictions of thermoelectric figure of merit than n-type doping, and values ofZT~0.95–1 are found for hole concentrations in the range 1016–1017 cm−3and temperature between 600 and 700 K.

PbSe is an attractive thermoelectric material due to its favorable electronic structure, high melting point, and lower cost compared to PbTe. Herein, the hitherto unexplored alloys of PbSe with NaSbSe2(NaPbmSbSem+2) are described and the most promising p‐type PbSe‐based thermoelectrics are found among them. Surprisingly, it is observed that below 500 K, NaPbmSbSem+2exhibits unorthodox semiconducting‐like electrical conductivity, despite possessing degenerate carrier densities of ≈1020cm−3. It is shown that the peculiar behavior derives from carrier scattering by the grain boundaries. It is further demonstrated that the high solubility of NaSbSe2in PbSe augments both the thermoelectric properties while maintaining a rock salt structure. Namely, density functional theory calculations and photoemission spectroscopy demonstrate that introduction of NaSbSe2lowers the energy separation between the L‐ and Σ‐valence bands and enhances the power factors under 700 K. The crystallographic disorder of Na+, Pb2+, and Sb3+moreover provides exceptionally strong point defect phonon scattering yielding low lattice thermal conductivities of 1–0.55 W m‐1K‐1between 400 and 873 K without nanostructures. As a consequence, NaPb10SbSe12achieves maximumZT≈1.4 near 900 K when optimally doped. More importantly, NaPb10SbSe12maintains highZTacross a broad temperature range, giving an estimated recordZTavgof ≈0.64 between 400 and 873 K, a significant improvement over existing p‐type PbSe thermoelectrics.

Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) has been predicted to exhibit an in-plane thermal conductivity as high as ~ 550 W m−1K−1at room temperature, making it a promising thermal management material. However, current experimental results (220–420 W m−1K−1) have been well below the prediction. Here, we report on the modulation of h-BN thermal conductivity by controlling the B isotope concentration. For monoisotopic10B h-BN, an in-plane thermal conductivity as high as 585 W m−1K−1is measured at room temperature, ~ 80% higher than that of h-BN with a disordered isotope concentration (52%:48% mixture of10B and11B). The temperature-dependent thermal conductivities of monoisotopic h-BN agree well with first principles calculations including only intrinsic phonon-phonon scattering. Our results illustrate the potential to achieve high thermal conductivity in h-BN and control its thermal conductivity, opening avenues for the wide application of h-BN as a next-generation thin-film material for thermal management, metamaterials and metadevices.
