Understanding and managing data privacy in the digital world can be challenging for sighted users, let alone blind and lowvision (BLV) users. There is limited research on how BLV users, who have special accessibility needs, navigate data privacy, and how potential privacy tools could assist them. We conducted an in-depth qualitative study with 21 US BLV participants to understand their data privacy risk perception and mitigation, as well as their information behaviors related to data privacy. We also explored BLV users’ attitudes towards potential privacy question answering (Q&A) assistants that enable them to better navigate data privacy information. We found that BLV users face heightened security and privacy risks, but their risk mitigation is often insufficient. They do not necessarily seek data privacy information but clearly recognize the benefits of a potential privacy Q&A assistant. They also expect privacy Q&A assistants to possess cross-platform compatibility, support multi-modality, and demonstrate robust functionality. Our study sheds light on BLV users’ expectations when it comes to usability, accessibility, trust and equity issues regarding digital data privacy.

                            Exploring the Needs of Users for Supporting Privacy-Protective Behaviors in Smart Homes
                        
                    
    
            In this paper, we studied people’s smart home privacy-protective behaviors (SH-PPBs), to gain a better understanding of their privacy management do’s and don’ts in this context. We first surveyed 159 participants and elicited 33 unique SH-PPB practices, revealing that users heavily rely on ad hoc approaches at the physical layer (e.g., physical blocking, manual powering off). We also characterized the types of privacy concerns users wanted to address through SH-PPBs, the reasons preventing users from doing SH-PPBs, and privacy features they wished they had to support SH-PPBs. We then storyboarded 11 privacy protection concepts to explore opportunities to better support users’ needs, and asked another 227 participants to criticize and rank these design concepts. Among the 11 concepts, Privacy Diagnostics, which is similar to security diagnostics in anti-virus software, was far preferred over the rest. We also witnessed rich evidence of four important factors in designing SH-PPB tools, as users prefer (1) simple, (2) proactive, (3) preventative solutions that can (4) offer more control.

            Many consumer Internet Things (IoT) devices involve spatial sensors such as cameras and microphones. These affect the privacy of nearby people. A prime example is smart home security cameras. We present our work developing scenarios, use cases, and design proposals for addressing smart camera privacy. Preliminary findings from a concept evaluation with 11 participants is presented. The outcomes of this research through design project foreground the importance and challenges of designing to support the privacy of nearby users. We outline actionable design responses while also raising limitations of technology approaches alone to address these issues.more » « less

            People often rely on their friends, family, and other loved ones to help them make decisions about digital privacy and security. However, these social processes are rarely supported by technology. To address this gap, we developed an Android-based mobile application ("app") prototype which helps individuals collaborate with people they know to make informed decisions about their app privacy permissions. To evaluate our design, we conducted an interview study with 10 college students while they interacted with our prototype. Overall, participants responded positively to the novel idea of using social collaboration as a means for making better privacy decisions. Yet, we also found that users are less inclined to help others and may be only willing to partake in conversations that directly affect themselves. We discuss the potential for embedding social processes in the design of systems that support privacy decision-making, as well as some of the challenges of this approach.more » « less

            Abstract: Improved soil health (SH) is critical in achieving agricultural resilience and miti- gating climate risks. Whether SH management practices are widely used depends greatly on US farmers’ voluntary decision-making. Toward understanding this point, much research has addressed factors that contribute to the adoption (or lack thereof) of SH-promoting practices, but less is known in terms of farmers’ perceptions of SH itself and the corresponding man- agement practices they see as related to achieving SH. To offer introductory insight on this knowledge gap and support better buy-in from farmers toward positive SH outcomes, our research draws upon qualitative interviews with 91 farmers across three key agricultural states in the Midwest (Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan). We develop a more detailed understanding of farmers’ views on SH, and why and how they manage for it. Nearly all interviewed farmers were familiar with the concept of SH and most viewed it favorably. A minority of farmers lacked familiarity with the term “SH” yet still managed for it. Skeptics of SH largely cited uncertainties related to over-zealous messaging by proponents of SH or lack of evidence for the return on investment of SH practices. Overall, farmers’ perceptions of SH largely aligned with the scientific community’s understanding of soils being a dynamic system, though farmers most dominantly defined SH by its biological component. Farmers perceived a host of benefits of SH, most often noting benefits to production, followed by improvements in physical aspects of the soil such as erosion control and increased organic matter. Notably, pro- duction and sustainability benefits were often cited together, suggesting that SH management is increasingly seen as a “win-win” by farmers. Additionally, we found that many farmers view themselves as active participants in SH outcomes and believe their management choices are indicators of positive SH outcomes, regardless of the practices they employ, including some strategies (such as tillage or tile drainage) that do not align with scientifically documented approaches to improving SH. Our findings show that farmers report engaging in an array of SH management practices that target both biotic and abiotic components of soils, and often use multiple practices in tandem to promote SH on their farms. Achieving better SH in agricultural production in the future will require engaging farmers in SH management by tailoring outreach and communication strategies to align with the perspectives and language farmers themselves use to conceptualize SH.more » « less

            Sherr, Micah; Shafiq, Zubair (Ed.)Prior work has consistently found that people have miscomprehensions and misunderstandings about technical terms. However, that work has exclusively studied general populations, usually recruited online. This work investigates the relationship between generational cohorts and their understandings of privacy terms, specifically cohorts of elementary school children (aged 10-11), young adults (aged 18-23), and retired adults (aged 73-92), all recruited offline. We surveyed participants about their understanding of and confidence with technical terms that commonly appear in privacy policies. We then moderated a post-survey focus group with each generational cohort in which participants discussed their reactions to the actual definitions along with their experience with technical privacy terms. We found that young adults had better understandings of technical terms than the other generations, despite all generations reporting being regular Internet users. Participants across all generational cohorts discussed themes of confusion and frustration with technical terms, and older adults particularly reported a sense of being left behind. Our results reinforce the need for improvement in the presentation of information about data use practices. Our results also demonstrate the need for more focused research and attention on the youngest and oldest members of society and their use of the Internet and technology.more » « less
