Title: Environmental inequality and disparities in school readiness: The role of neurotoxic lead
Abstract Developmental science has increasingly scrutinized how environmental hazards influence child outcomes, but few studies examine how contaminants affect disparities in early skill formation. Linking research on environmental inequality and early childhood development, this study assessed whether differences in exposure to neurotoxic lead explain sociodemographic gaps in school readiness. Using panel data tracking a representative sample of 1266 Chicago children (50% female, 16% White, 30% Black, 49% Hispanic, μ  age = 5.2 months at baseline, collected 1994–2002), analyses quantified the contribution of lead contamination to class and racial disparities in vocabulary skills and attention problems at ages 4 and 5. Results suggested that lead contamination explains 15%–25% and 33%–66% of the disparities in each outcome, respectively, although imprecise estimates preclude drawing firm inferences about attention problems.  more » « less

  1. Abstract Although socioeconomic disparities in cognitive ability emerge early in the life course, most research on the consequences of living in a disadvantaged neighborhood has focused on school-age children or adolescents. In this study, we outline and test a theoretical model of neighborhood effects on cognitive development during early childhood that highlights the mediating role of exposure to neurotoxic lead. To evaluate this model, we follow 1,266 children in Chicago from birth through school entry and track both their areal risk of lead exposure and their neighborhoods' socioeconomic composition over time. With these data, we estimate the joint effects of neighborhood poverty and environmental lead contamination on receptive vocabulary ability. We find that sustained exposure to disadvantaged neighborhoods reduces vocabulary skills during early childhood and that this effect operates through a causal mechanism involving lead contamination.

  2. Introduction:Detecting water contamination in community housing is crucial for protecting public health. Early detection enables timely action to prevent waterborne diseases and ensures equitable access to safe drinking water. Traditional methods recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rely on collecting water samples and conducting lab tests, which can be both time-consuming and costly. Methods:To address these limitations, this study introduces a Graph Attention Network (GAT) to predict lead contamination in drinking water. The GAT model leverages publicly available municipal records and housing information to model interactions between homes and identify contamination patterns. Each house is represented as a node, and relationships between nodes are analyzed to provide a clearer understanding of contamination risks within the community. Results:Using data from Flint, Michigan, the model demonstrated higher performance compared to traditional methods. Specifically, the GAT achieved an accuracy of 0.80, precision of 0.71, and recall of 0.93, outperforming XGBoost, a classical machine learning algorithm, which had an accuracy of 0.70, precision of 0.66, and recall of 0.67. Discussion:In addition to its predictive capabilities, the GAT model identifies key factors contributing to lead contamination, enabling more precise targeting of at-risk areas. This approach offers a practical tool for policymakers and public health officials to assess and mitigate contamination risks, ultimately improving community health and safety.

  3. Objectives. To assess the US incarcerated population’s risk of exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). Methods. We assessed how many of the 6118 US carceral facilities were located in the same hydrologic unit code watershed boundaries as known or likely locations of PFAS contamination. We conducted geospatial analyses on data aggregated from Environmental Protection Agency databases and a PFAS site tracker in 2022 to model the hydrologically feasible known and presumptive PFAS contamination sites for nearly 2 million incarcerated people. Results. Findings indicate that 5% (∼310) of US carceral facilities have at least 1 known source of PFAS contamination in the same watershed boundary and that it is at a higher elevation than the facility; also 47% (∼2285) have at least 1 presumptive source. A minimum of 990 000 people are incarcerated in these facilities, including at least 12 800 juveniles. Exposure risks faced by incarcerated youths are disproportionately underassessed. Conclusions. The long-term impacts from potential exposures to PFAS are preventable and exacerbate health inequities among incarcerated populations. Widespread public attention to PFASs can be parlayed into broader environmental monitoring for imprisoned people. BackgroundWhen unaddressed, contamination in child maltreatment research, in which some proportion of children recruited for a nonmaltreated comparison group are exposed to maltreatment, downwardly biases the significance and magnitude of effect size estimates. This study extends previous contamination research by investigating how a dual‐measurement strategy of detecting and controlling contamination impacts causal effect size estimates of child behavior problems. MethodsThis study included 634 children from the LONGSCAN study with 63 cases of confirmed child maltreatment after age 8 and 571 cases without confirmed child maltreatment. Confirmed child maltreatment and internalizing and externalizing behaviors were recorded every 2 years between ages 4 and 16. Contamination in the nonmaltreated comparison group was identified and controlled by either a prospective self‐report assessment at ages 12, 14, and 16 or by a one‐time retrospective self‐report assessment at age 18. Synthetic control methods were used to establish causal effects and quantify the impact of contamination when it was not controlled, when it was controlled for by prospective self‐reports, and when it was controlled for by retrospective self‐reports. ResultsRates of contamination ranged from 62% to 67%. Without controlling for contamination, causal effect size estimates for internalizing behaviors were not statistically significant. Causal effects only became statistically significant after controlling contamination identified from either prospective or retrospective reports and effect sizes increased by between 17% and 54%. Controlling contamination had a smaller impact on effect size increases for externalizing behaviors but did produce a statistically significant overall effect, relative to the model ignoring contamination, when prospective methods were used. ConclusionsThe presence of contamination in a nonmaltreated comparison group can underestimate the magnitude and statistical significance of causal effect size estimates, especially when investigating internalizing behavior problems. Addressing contamination can facilitate the replication of results across studies.

  5. ABSTRACT Ectomycorrhizal and saprotrophic fungi respond differently to changing edaphic conditions caused by atmospheric deposition. Within each guild, responses can vary significantly, reflecting the diversity of species and their specific adaptations to environmental changes. Metal contaminants are often deposited onto earth's surface through atmospheric deposition, yet few studies have assessed the relationship between soil metal contamination and fungal communities. The goal of this study was to understand how soil metal contamination and other edaphic factors vary across the spruce‐fir ecosystem in the Southern Appalachians and influence fungal diversity and function. Here, we characterize soil fungal communities using high‐throughput sequencing of the ITS2 gene region and found that higher soil lead (Pb) concentrations were associated with lower fungal diversity. Ectomycorrhizal fungi were less diverse (specifically hydrophilic ectomycorrhizal functional types) at plots with elevated soil Pb concentrations, while saprotrophic fungi were less diverse at plots with elevated soil carbon:nitrogen ratios. Fungal community composition was significantly influenced by pH, Pb, and spatial factors. This study identifies important relationships between fungal diversity and soil Pb concentrations and indicates variable responses of genera within well‐defined ecological guilds. Our work highlights the need to characterize poorly understood taxonomic groups of fungi and their function prior to further environmental degradation.
