The 2017 NSF INCLUDES “Conference to Advance the Collective Impact of Retention and Continuation Strategies for Hispanics and Other Underrepresented Minorities in STEM Fields” was held at the Kellogg Conference Center on the Gallaudet University campus in Washington, D.C., on March 6-8th, 2017. The conference brought together 74 researchers, higher education administrators, industry representatives, members of professional societies, and other community members from regions across the United States. Participants shared their experiences and expertise in broadening participation in STEM fields and in identifying strategies to improve outcomes for Hispanics, women, and other underrepresented groups in STEM fields. Panels focused on lessons learned about collective impact, the K-12 pipeline to college and the importance of community, Latino student success in two-year institutions, increasing Latino retention in undergraduate STEM programs, recruitment of highly competitive Latinos and other underrepresented minorities into graduate schools and strategies for successful completion of graduate studies, and industry partnerships to identify a diverse workforce. Panel and keynote presentations focused on evidence-based knowledge, leveraging findings from disciplinary and interdisciplinary fields and from differing types of institutions and educational levels to determine whether strategies identified can yield large-scale progress towards INCLUDES goals. In addition, small breakout sessions offered opportunities for attendees to share their ideas on (1) lessons learned from collective impact projects; (2) obstacles confronting students at various points and in different sectors of the education, career, and industry STEM pathways; and (3) best practices for overcoming barriers and ensuring that the strategies identified would be successful in different contexts.

Summary report from the mini-conference on workforce development through research-based, plasma-focused activities
This report is a summary of the mini-conference on Workforce Development Through Research-Based, Plasma-Focused Science Education and Public Engagement held during the 2022 American Physical Society Division of Plasma Physics annual meeting. The motivation for organizing this mini-conference originates from recent studies and community-based reports highlighting important issues with the current state of the plasma workforce. Here, we summarize the main findings presented in the two speaker sessions of the mini-conference, the challenges, and recommendations identified in the discussion sessions and the results from a post-conference survey. We further provide information on initiatives and studies presented at the mini-conference, along with references to further resources.

In this study, we characterized GTAs’ teaching practices in algebra-based introductory physics “mini-studios,” which combine student-centered recitation and inquiry-based labs. We documented both GTA and student actions using an observation protocol adapted from the Laboratory Observation Protocol for Undergraduate STEM (LOPUS). We observed 72 mini-studio sessions led by 11 GTAs over two semesters. We used an agglomerative hierarchical cluster analysis and identified three clusters that described the similarities and differences between individual sessions. Two clusters contained sessions characterized by more interactive GTAs but they varied in the amount of feedback, lecture and whole class questioning the GTA provided. In the third cluster, GTAs tended to wait for students to call on them before engaging. Student behaviors also varied between the clusters, suggesting correlations between student behaviors and GTA instructional styles, in contrast to previous findings with LOPUS in other contexts. The 5th International Workshop on Software Engineering Education for the Next Generation was held on May 16, 2023 in Melbourne, Australia. The workshop was part of the 45th International Conference on Software Engineering. It specifically supported the general theme of Educating the Next Generation of Software Engineers. Building on its predecessors, the workshop used a highly interactive format, structured around eight short paper presentations to generate discussion topics, an activity to select the most interesting topics, and structured breakout sessions. This enabled the participants to discuss the most interesting topics in detail. Participants presented the results of the breakout sessions using mind maps.more » « less

Abstract The conference “Transposable Elements at the Crossroads of Evolution, Health and Disease” was hosted by Keystone Symposia in Whistler, British Columbia, Canada, on September 3–6, 2023, and was organized by Kathleen Burns, Harmit Malik and Irina Arkhipova. The central theme of the meeting was the incredible diversity of ways in which transposable elements (TEs) interact with the host, from disrupting the existing genes and pathways to creating novel gene products and expression patterns, enhancing the repertoire of host functions, and ultimately driving host evolution. The meeting was organized into six plenary sessions and two afternoon workshops with a total of 50 invited and contributed talks, two poster sessions, and a career roundtable. The topics ranged from TE roles in normal and pathological processes to restricting and harnessing TE activity based on mechanistic insights gained from genetic, structural, and biochemical studies.more » « less
