Title: “Wait, Wait, Go Back”: Investigating Social Supports for Homework During Do-design Sessions with Teachers
Teachers use interpersonal classroom skills to support their students’ learning in the classroom, but homework is done in isolation without the affordances of classroom interactions. Here we investigate how a homework tool could empower teachers to utilize their interpersonal classroom skills and provide new ways to support students outside of the classroom. Through three phases of interviews and co-design, we co-designed software for teachers to create their own robot-assisted homework activities. We found that teachers' existing expertise initially led to wrong assumptions about the tool but after viewing an exemplifying stimulus they shifted their mental model of the tool and of homework in general. These findings can help understand (1) how pedagogical expertise may hinder utilization of new tools, and (2) how a catalyst may shift existing perceptions and facilitate the use of new paradigms to support student learning.  more » « less

  1. Educational technologies can provide students with adaptive feedback and guidance, but these systems lack personal interactions that make social and cultural connections to the student's own classroom and prior experiences. Social or companion robots have a high capacity for these types of interactions, but typically require advanced levels of expertise to program. In this study, we examined teachers use of an authoring tool to enable them to leverage their classroom-based expertise to design robot-assisted homework assignments, and explore how seeing a robot enact their designs influences their work. We found that the tool enabled the teachers to create novel social interactions for homework activities that were similar to their classroom interaction patterns. These interaction designs evolved over time and were shaped by the teacher's emerging mental model of the social robot, their concept of the students' perspective of these interactions, and a shift towards informal classroom-like interaction paradigms, thus transforming their view of what they can achieve with homework. We discuss how these findings demonstrate how the context of the activity can influence initial mental models of social activities and suggest practical guidance on designing authoring tools to best facilitate the creation of computer or robot supported social activities, such as homework.

  2. Transferring programming skills learned in the classroom to diverse real-world scenarios is both essential and challenging in computing education. This experience report describes an approach to facilitate learning transfer by fostering adaptive expertise. Students were engaged in co-creating contextualized worked-out examples, including step-by-step solutions. Through three homework assignments in a Spring 2023 database programming course, we observed substantial improvements, where students generated detailed and accurate solutions and enriched their problem-solving contexts from simple phrases to detailed stories, drawn from 17 real-life scenarios. Our results also suggest that the peer assessment process cultivated a supportive learning environment and fostered adaptive expertise. We discuss the lessons learned and draw pedagogical implications for integrating student-generated contextualized materials in other programming courses.

  3. While teachers are consistently asked to investigate new forms of technology, the use of computer-based games provides additional, unique issues. This research describes the changes in 12 elementary teachers' perceptions of games in the classroom after participating in an early algebra game-based intervention. Teachers implemented two computer-based games and one interactive tool as part of their daily mathematics lesson. They were also asked to guide their students through specific supplemental activities for out-of-game learning, which directly related to the content in the games. Surveys, classroom observations, self-reflection logs, and interviews documented teacher-student interaction during Math Snacks games. Findings reflect how the intervention changed teachers' views of games; their orientation to using inquiry in the classroom; their facilitation of technology; and their perception of including students with different abilities in gameplay. Participating teachers saw games as a tool to let students explore and introduce a topic with minimal initial guidance. Some teachers also noted the value of computer-based games in supporting low-performing students' integration and participation with the rest of the class. Teachers reported that students' collaboration and discussion skills were the primary competencies noticed while students were playing. Most of the teachers noted that their role as facilitators is essential n in the students' learning.

  4. Spatial reasoning comprises a set of skills used to mentally visualize, orient, and transform objects or spaces. These skills, which develop in humans through interaction with our physical world and direct instruction, are strongly associated with mathematics achievement but are often neglected in early grades mathematics teaching. To conceptualize ways to increase the representation of spatial reasoning skills in the classroom, we examined the outcomes of cognitive interviews with kin- dergarten through grade two students in which they engaged with one spatial reasoning task. Qualitative analyses of students’ work samples and verbal reasoning responses on a single shape de/composition task revealed evidence of a continuum of sophistication in their responses that supports a previously articulated hypothetical learning progression. Results suggest that teachers may be able to efficiently infer students’ skills in spatial reasoning using a single task and use the results to make instructional decisions that would support students’ mathematical development. The practical implications of this work indicate that additional classroom-based research could support the adoption of such practices that could help teachers efficiently teach spatial reasoning skills through mathematics instruction.

    Orchestration tools may support K-12 teachers in facilitating student learning, especially when designed to address classroom stakeholders’ needs. Our previous work revealed a need for human-AI shared control when dynamically pairing students for collaborative learning in the classroom, but offered limited guidance on the role each agent should take. In this study, we designed storyboards for scenarios where teachers, students and AI co-orchestrate dynamic pairing when using AI-based adaptive math software for individual and collaborative learning. We surveyed 54 math teachers on their co-orchestration preferences. We found that teachers would like to share control with the AI to lessen their orchestration load. As well, they would like to have the AI propose student pairs with explanations, and identify risky proposed pairings. However, teachers are hesitant to let the AI auto-pair students even if they are busy, and are less inclined to let AI override teacher-proposed pairing. Our study contributes to teachers’ needs, preference, and boundaries for how they want to share the task and control of student pairing with the AI and students, and design implications in human-AI co-orchestration tools.
