  1. This paper proposes a framework to explore the op- timization of applications where a distributed set of nodes/sensors, e.g., automated vehicles, collaboratively exchange information over a network to achieve real-time situational-awareness. To that end we propose a reasonable proxy for the usefulness of possibly delayed sensor updates and their sensitivity to the network re- sources devoted to such exchanges. This enables us to study the joint optimization of (1) the application-level update rates, i.e., how often and when sensors update other nodes, and (2), the transmission resources allocated to, and resulting delays associated with, exchanging updates. We first consider a network scenario where nodes share a single resource, e.g., an ad hoc wireless setting where a cluster of nodes, e.g., platoon of vehicles, share information by broadcasting on a single collision domain. In this setting we provide an explicit solution characterizing the interplay between network congestion and situational awareness amongst heterogeneous nodes. We then extend this to a setting where such clusters can also exchange information via a base station. In this setting we characterize the optimal solution and develop a natural distributed algorithm based on exchanging congestion prices associated with sensor nodes’ update rates and associated network transmission rates. Preliminary numerical evaluation provides initial insights on the trade-offs associated with optimizing situational awareness and the proposed algorithm’s convergence.

  2. Human-centric situational awareness and visualization are needed for analyzing the big data in an efficient way. One of the challenges is to create an algorithm to analyze the given data without any help of other data analyzing tools. This research effort aims to identify how graphical objects (such as data-shapes) developed in accordance with an analyst's mental model can enhance analyst's situation awareness. Our approach for improved big data visualization is two-fold, focusing on both visualization and interaction. This paper presents the developed data and graph technique based on forcedirected model graph in 3D. It is developed using Unity 3D gaming engine. Pilot testing was done with different data sets for checking the efficiency of the system in immersive environment and non-immersive environment. The application is able to handle the data successfully for the given data sets in data visualization. The currently graph can render around 200 to 300 linked nodes in real-time.

Persons with learning disabilities (LD) are underrepresented in computer science and information technology fields despite the explosion of related career opportunities and interest. In this study, we examine the use of pair programming as a collaborative intervention in with computer programming and compare students with learning disabilities to students who do not have learning disabilities. We concentrate on situational motivation constructs which tap into the desire to meet goals and acquire skills. We find that students with LD and similar students without LD fare the same. For the both groups, three of the four situational motivation subscales increase after the introduction of pair programming. The use of pair programming holds promise as an educational intervention for all students including those with learning disabilities.

Computer science educators often use multiple creative computing platforms to motivate and support students learning computer science. Arguably, we understand little about the complementary ways in which the various platforms build on students' prior experiences. This study compares two CS+music platforms used by middle school students in a summer camp to understand the unique affordances of each platform at activating and building upon prior music and computing experiences. We assess interest formation through pre and post student surveys and via interviews on the final day of the camp. The findings suggest that using different approaches to CS+music platform design may help engage students with different levels of prior music and coding experience.
