Title: A Model Analysis of the Tidal Engine That Drives Nitrogen Cycling in Coastal Riparian Aquifers
Abstract

In coastal rivers, tides facilitate surface water‐groundwater exchange and strongly coupled nitrification‐denitrification near the fluctuating water table. We used numerical fluid flow and reactive transport models to explore hydrogeologic and biogeochemical controls on nitrogen transport along an idealized tidal freshwater zone based on field observations from White Clay Creek, Delaware, USA. The capacity of the riparian aquifer to remove nitrate depends largely on nitrate transport rates, which initially increase with increasing tidal range but then decline as sediments become muddier and permeability decreases. Over the entire model reach, local nitrification provides a similar amount of nitrate as surface and groundwater contributions combined. More than half (~66%) of nitrate removed via denitrification is produced in situ, while the vast majority of remaining nitrate removed comes from groundwater sources. In contrast, average nitrate removal from surface water due to tidal pumping amounts to only ~1% of the average daily in‐channel riverine nitrate load or 1.77 kg of nitrate along the reach each day. As a result, tidal bank storage zones may not be major sinks for nitrate in coastal rivers but can act as effective sinks for groundwater nitrate. By extension, tidal bank storage zones provide a critical ecosystem service, reducing contributions of groundwater nitrate, which is often derived from septic tanks and fertilizers, to coastal rivers.

  1. Abstract

    Microbial processing of reactive nitrogen in stream sediments and connected aquifers can remove and transform nitrogen prior to its discharge into coastal waters, decreasing the likelihood of harmful algal blooms and low oxygen levels in estuaries. Canonical wisdom points to the decreased capacity of rivers to retain nitrogen as they flow toward the coast. However, how tidal freshwater zones, which often extend hundreds of kilometers inland, process and remove nitrogen remains unknown. Using geochemical measurements and numerical models, we show that tidal pumping results in the rapid cycling of nitrogen within distinct zones throughout the riparian aquifer. Near the fluctuating water table nitrification dominates, with high nitrate concentrations (>10 mg N/L) and consistent isotopic composition. Beneath this zone, isotopes reveal that nitrate is both denitrified and added over the tidal cycle, maintaining nitrate concentrations >3–4 mg N/L. In most of the riparian aquifer and streambed, nitrate concentrations are <0.5 mg N/L, suggesting denitrification dominates. Model results reveal that oxygen delivery to groundwater from the overlying unsaturated soil fuels mineralization and nitrification, with subsequent denitrification in low‐oxygen, high organic matter regions. Depending on flow paths, tidal freshwater zones could be sources of nitrate in regions with permeable sediment and low organic matter content.

  2. Abstract

    Tides in coastal rivers drive river‐groundwater (hyporheic) exchange and provide opportunities for nitrate removal that may improve coastal water quality. Silt and sand layers in coastal floodplain sediments can alter the flow and transformation of nitrate. Our goal was to understand how sediment heterogeneity influences nitrogen dynamics near tidal rivers. Numerical simulations show that oxic, variably saturated sand layers and anoxic, organic‐rich silt layers are sites of nitrification and denitrification, respectively. The exchange of river water and nitrate through heterogeneous sediments increases with sand fraction, as sand lenses become longer and more connected. The amount of nitrate removed from river water also increases but represents a smaller portion of total nitrate exchange through the hyporheic zone, causing removal efficiency to decline. Our results suggest that accurate characterization of aquifer heterogeneity leads to an improved understanding of sites of nutrient transformation within floodplain sediments.

  3. Abstract

    Subterranean estuaries (STEs) form at the land‐sea boundary where groundwater and seawater mix. These biogeochemically reactive zones influence groundwater‐borne nutrient concentrations and speciation prior to export via submarine groundwater discharge (SGD). We examined a STE located along the York River Estuary (YRE) to determine if SGD delivers dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and phosphorus (DIP) to the overlying water. We assessed variations in STE geochemical profiles with depth across locations, times, and tidal stages, estimated N removal along the STE flow path, measured hydraulic gradients to estimate SGD, and calculated potential nutrient fluxes. Salinity, dissolved oxygen (DO), DIN, and DIP varied significantly with depth and season (p < 0.05), but not location or tidal stage. Ammonium dominated the DIN pool deep in the STE. Moving toward the sediment surface, ammonium concentrations decreased as nitrate and DO concentrations increased, suggesting nitrification. Potential sediment N removal rates mediated by denitrification were <8 mmoles N m−2 d−1. The total groundwater discharge rate was 38 ± 11 L m−2 d−1; discharge followed tidal and seasonal patterns. Net SGD nutrient fluxes were 0.065–3.2 and 0.019–0.093 mmoles m−2 d−1for DIN and DIP, respectively. However, microbial N removal in the STE may attenuate 0.58% to >100% of groundwater DIN. SGD fluxes were on the same order of magnitude as diffusive benthic fluxes but accounted for <10% of the nutrients delivered by fluvial advection in the YRE. Our results indicate the importance of STE biogeochemical transformations to SGD flux estimations and their role in coastal eutrophication and nutrient dynamics.

  4. Abstract

    Peak flow events in gaining stream/river channels cause lung model hyporheic exchange with the banks (bank storage), which fosters beneficial reactions as polluted channel water cycles through riparian groundwater. Soil pipes are common along stream/riverbanks, and enhance exchange, yet their effect on reactions such as denitrification is unknown. We used MODFLOW with the Conduit Flow Package to simulate lung model exchange during a peak flow event in a section of stream bank/riparian soil with soil pipes, and MT3D‐USGS to estimate nitrate transport and denitrification. We varied soil matrix hydraulic conductivity (K) and first‐order reaction constant (k), as well as soil pipe density, length, and height above the initial channel water surface elevation (H). The addition of soil pipes enhanced stream bank (riparian) denitrification relative to banks without pipes, e.g., a 76% increase due to adding a single 1.5 m pipe. Denitrification increased linearly with pipe density but exhibited nonlinear trends with other parameters. Sensitivity analysis revealed length and density to be most influential. Soil pipe enhancement of denitrification was governed by hyporheic volume in most cases in our study. Exceptions included (a) coarse soil (K = 10−3 m/s) and (b) lowkandH > 0. Scaling our results to the stream corridor scale estimated that five soil pipes per m cumulatively induced 3% nitrate removal along a 1 km reach. Overall, soil pipes enhanced advection of nitrate into the banks, and also increased residence times of that nitrate under certain conditions, which together enhanced denitrification. This enhancement has implications for excess nitrate management in watersheds.

  5. Abstract

    Urbanization negatively impacts water quality in streams by reducing stream‐groundwater interactions, which can reduce a stream's capacity to naturally attenuate nitrate. Meadowbrook Creek, a first order urban stream in Syracuse, New York, has an inverse urbanization gradient, with heavily urbanized headwaters that are disconnected from the floodplain and downstream reaches that have intact riparian floodplains and connection to riparian aquifers. This system allows assessment of how stream‐groundwater interactions in urban streams impact the net sources and sinks of nitrate at the reach scale. We used continuous (15‐min) streamflow measurements and weekly grab samples at three gauging stations positioned longitudinally along the creek to develop continuous nitrate load estimates at the inlet and outlet of two contrasting reaches. Nitrate load estimates were determined using a USGS linear regression model, RLOADEST, and differences between loads at the inlet and outlet of contrasting reaches were used to quantify nitrate sink and source behaviour year‐round. We observed a nitrate load of 1.4 × 104 kg NO3per water year, on average, at the outlet of the urbanized reach while the nitrate load at the outlet of the downstream, connected reach was 1.0 × 104 kg NO3per water year, on average. We found the more heavily urbanized, hydrologically‐disconnected reach was a net source of nitrate regardless of season. In contrast, stream‐groundwater exchange caused the hydrologically connected reach to be both a source and sink for nitrate, depending on time of year. Both reaches alter nitrate source and sink behaviour at various spatiotemporal scales. Groundwater connection in the downstream, connected reach reduces annual nitrate loads and provides more opportunities for sources and sinks of nitrate year‐round than the hydrologically disconnected stream reach. Mechanisms include groundwater discharge into the stream with variable nitrate concentrations, surface‐water groundwater interactions that foster denitrification, and stream load loss to surrounding near‐stream aquifers. This study emphasizes how loads are important in understanding how stream‐groundwater interactions impact reach scale nitrate export in urban streams.
