Title: Listening to Those That Matter: Deans' Responses to the Barriers that Latiné/x/a/o Contingent faculty at HSI's face.
The authors of this paper hosted a 2-day conference that brought a group of Latiné/x/a/o contingent faculty from the California State University (CSU) system together to better understand the barriers they face in their professional roles and responsibilities while also identifying assets they bring to the classroom and institutions. Contingent faculty face mounting and compounding barriers that have devastating effects, not only on the faculty, but also the students they serve since a majority of contingent faculty are hired to teach first-generation, working class, and students of color. This paper seeks to synthesize a follow-up to the conference in where five STEM deans within CSU system were recruited to do a reading and reflection about the findings connected to the 2-day conference for the contingent faculty. From the dean’s responses, the authors paint a picture on the challenges that also impact deans from making changes for contingent faculty.  more » « less

  1. The Conference for Latinx Contingent Faculty Members convened a group of faculty members in STEM fields at Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) in the California State University System. The two-day event explored the often hidden, or unacknowledged realities of contingent faculty participants, with the purpose of gathering information about barriers and trade-offs these faculty experience professionally and personally that impact their work. This report provides an overview of barriers and challenges that were raised in the conference, and a brief review of the literature of strategies that could address these experiences, and better support Latinx contingent faculty in STEM.

  2. Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) serve a high proportion of students from underrepresented minority groups, particularly within STEM fields. MSIs make up approximately 14 percent of all degree-granting, Title IV-eligible institutions for higher education, and they enroll approximately 30 percent of all undergraduates in the United States. However, in 2018, only 3 percent of all federal obligations for science and engineering research and development provided to institutions of higher education was distributed to MSIs. Federal funding agencies, such as the National Science Foundation (NSF), have recognized the need to diversify their funding portfolios to increase the engagement of under-participating institutions, including MSIs. With this in mind, a conference was held in February 2020, funded by NSF, with the goal to increase the number and competitiveness of proposals from MSI faculty to core programs within NSF’s Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE). While informative, the conference, along with the interest survey sent to potential participants, revealed multiple challenges and barriers MSI faculty face as they attempt to secure and conduct research funding. This work-in-progress paper focuses on the responses to an open-ended question of the conference interest survey focusing on barriers to securing research funding.

  3. Mentoring interventions, particularly mentoring that incorporates networking, have been effective at meeting the professional needs of women and under-represented minority (URM) faculty. However, women, especially URM women, in STEM careers report feeling left out of networks and thus face decreased social and administrative support. The isolation of women, especially URM women, in engineering in the California State University (CSU) System is apparent in the fact that many CSU engineering departments have only a few women faculty and no more than a single URM woman faculty. Thus, despite current mentoring programs at each CSU campus, there is only a few (if any) other women within their engineering department with whom they may discuss shared experiences. As part of the NSF funded ADVANCE Partnership grant, “Kindling Inter-university Networks for Diverse (KIND) Engineering Faculty Advancement in the California State University System”, in order to address this isolation and to provide mentoring and networking opportunities for women engineering faculty in the CSU system, particularly woman who identify as URM, a series of virtual (to enable cross-campus mentoring), small group setting (to incorporate networking) mentoring events was organized. Another aspect of this initiative emphasizes foreign-born (FB) or foreign-trained (FT) women, a unique focus. Although the speed mentoring events are open to all engineering faculty in the CSU system, there is specific emphasis on those who are normally excluded from formal mentoring. In this paper, the post-event survey results which include the demographics of the participants are reported and the importance and impact of these events are discussed.

  4. Contingent, VITAL faculty make up the majority of faculty positions in the United States, and their role is primarily instruction. Yet they often face numerous barriers to participating in professional development and engaging in the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL), activities that can support their instructional effectiveness. This study explores how campuses can facilitate participation of contingent faculty in sustained professional development programs and how these programs can foster their engagement in SoTL.

    The COVID-19 pandemic forced the move from a traditional face-to-face classroom to a remote learning model. The success of the remote learning model is contingent upon several factors including appropriate learning materials. Instructors who were entrenched in the face-to-face teaching method had to make rapid adjustments to deliver learning materials and to engage students remotely. In contrast, instructors who had been using techniques to prepare students virtually before class time meeting were better positioned to pivot to the remote learning approach. The techniques and the materials developed by faculty from mathematics and aerospace engineering at an HBCU for effectively engaging students which include virtual pre class preparation were adapted for the remote learning method during this pandemic. These techniques and materials were made available to faculty to assist their move from face-to-face to remote learning. The approach is shared in this paper. Math and aerospace engineering students’ satisfaction with the approach was measured and the results are also included in this paper.
