Title: ADDRESSING SOCIAL DILEMMAS WITH MASCOTS, INFORMATION, AND GRAPHICS
Reducing nonpoint source pollution is a complex social dilemma involving externalities, information asymmetries, and coordination problems. Using a laboratory experiment, this research investigates how mascots, public information, and data visualization can improve collective group behavior to address a social dilemma. Results show that groups reduce pollution in the experiment when a community mascot expresses negative emotions in response to poor water quality outcomes. Additionally, groups pollute less when they are provided public information about water quality, and abatement is greater when feedback is negatively framed. This study demonstrates how novel nonmonetary incentives can be used to achieve a collective environmental goal. (JELD79, Q25, Q52, Q53, D83)  more » « less

  1. As international efforts to mitigate greenhouse gases continue to fall short of global targets, the scientific community increasingly debates the role of solar geoengineering in climate policy. Given the infancy of these technologies, the debate is not yet whether to deploy solar geoengineering but whether solar geoengineering deserves consideration and research funding. Looming large over this discussion is the moral hazard conjecture – normalizing solar geoengineering will decrease mitigation efforts. Using a controlled experiment of a collective-risk social dilemma that simulates the strategic decisions of heterogeneous groups to mitigate emissions and deploy solar geoengineering, we find no evidence for the moral hazard conjecture. On the contrary, when people in the experiment are given the option to deploy solar geoengineering, average investment in mitigation increases.

  2. Abstract Collective action among public officials is necessary for the effective delivery of many social services, but relatively little is known about how it can be fostered through policy reforms. In this article, we compare cooperation among public officials within decentralized versus centrally‐administered municipalities in Honduras. Leveraging a quasi‐experiment in health sector reform, coupled with behavioral games and social network surveys, we find that decentralization is associated with greater cooperation. When they are able to communicate, health sector workers in decentralized municipalities contribute more to a public good than their centrally‐administered counterparts. This increase in cooperative behavior results in part from the decentralization reform engendering greater numbers of interactions and stronger ties across different levels of government. These findings indicate that institutional reforms like decentralization can favorably reconfigure patterns of social interactions across public organizations, which is an important component of administrative capacity in developing countries.

  3. Casual recommendations for scientists to “be human” and to “bring the public alongside the scientific process” have generated plethora of such interactions on social media. This study explores different self-presentation tactics, like sharing their research successes and failures, or contextualizing their research process, on how scientists and science issues are perceived by the public. In an online between-subjects experiment (N= 1,843), participants rated scientists who shared their failures as more benevolent and open, and as having more integrity, than those who only shared their successes. These perceptions further increased support for science and information-seeking intentions. The findings highlight how scientists’ self-presentation on social media can influence important science communication outcomes.

  4. There are many factors that affect the quality of data received from crowdsourcing, including cognitive biases, varying levels of expertise, and varying subjective scales. This work investigates how the elicitation and integration of multiple modalities of input can enhance the quality of collective estimations. We create a crowdsourced experiment where participants are asked to estimate the number of dots within images in two ways: ordinal (ranking) and cardinal (numerical) estimates. We run our study with 300 participants and test how the efficiency of crowdsourced computation is affected when asking participants to provide ordinal and/or cardinal inputs and how the accuracy of the aggregated outcome is affected when using a variety of aggregation methods. First, we find that more accurate ordinal and cardinal estimations can be achieved by prompting participants to provide both cardinal and ordinal information. Second, we present how accurate collective numerical estimates can be achieved with significantly fewer people when aggregating individual preferences using optimization-based consensus aggregation models. Interestingly, we also find that aggregating cardinal information may yield more accurate ordinal estimates.
