This study aims to investigate the design considerations and tensions in developing data visualization activities that integrate multi-disciplinary, critical, and community-centered approaches to data learning. We do so through conjecture mapping and qualitative analysis in the context of a design-based research study of an informal education program focused on data visualization. We found multiple design considerations tied to each approach, with critical approaches often deprioritized and related to tensions with the other approaches.

Unearthing Tensions in a PAR Project
Learning scientists are increasingly shifting the epistemological and axiological basis of their research towards participatory approaches. In these approaches, tensions are viewed as sites for learning, as they reveal lines of power which can be reconfigured towards more just ends. Vignettes from a PAR project with mathematics teachers, leaders of youth-based community organizations, and university scholars illustrate how tensions around practicality and performativity can be taken up or ignored in the research process, and the implications of these moves for new social arrangements. The importance of digging into tensions is underscored.

Feasible and developmentally appropriate sociotechnical approaches for protecting youth from online risks have become a paramount concern among human-computer interaction research communities. Therefore, we conducted 38 interviews with entrepreneurs, IT professionals, clinicians, educators, and researchers who currently work in the space of youth online safety to understand the different sociotechnical approaches they proposed to keep youth safe online, while overcoming key challenges associated with these approaches. We identified three approaches taken among these stakeholders, which included 1) leveraging artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning to detect risks, 2) building security/safety tools, and 3) developing new forms of parental control software. The trade-offs between privacy and protection, as well as other tensions among different stakeholders (e.g., tensions toward the big-tech companies) arose as major challenges, followed by the subjective nature of risk, lack of necessary but proprietary data, and costs to develop these technical solutions. To overcome the challenges, solutions such as building centralized and multi-disciplinary collaborations, creating sustainable business plans, prioritizing human-centered approaches, and leveraging state-of-art AI were suggested. Our contribution to the body of literature is providing evidence-based implications for the design of sociotechnical solutions to keep youth safe online.more » « less

Background: While advocates for integrating Computational Thinking (CT) into existing K12 classrooms have acknowledged and aimed to address various barriers to implementation, we contend that a more foundational issue—tensions between the epistemology of computing and those of existing disciplines—has largely been overlooked. Studies of contact between heterogeneous disciplinary perspectives in both pedagogical and real world professional settings point to other risks, and harms, that educators may need to consider as they attempt to integrate CT into their teaching. As such, designing for integrated CT pedagogies does not simply require addressing functional problems such as teacher professional learning and limited classroom time, but rather implicates complex epistemological navigations. Objective: This manuscript explores epistemic tensions between Computational Thinking (CT) and K12 humanities and arts disciplines and possibilities for their resolution. Method: Based on a Delphi study with 43 experts from three disciplines—language arts, social studies, and arts—as they engaged in 20 hours of focus group conversations exploring potential approaches to integrating CT these disciplines, analysis focused on identifying perceived epistemic tensions that can arise in the context of instruction and directions for their resolution. Findings: We found 5 epistemic tensions that are explored in detail: contextual reductionism, procedural reductionism, epistemic chauvinism, threats to epistemic identities, and epistemic convergence, as well as a number of potential directions for navigating them. Implications: The study’s findings provide insights that bear on both scholarship and pedagogical design aimed at promoting substantive interdisciplinary learning with CT, and, critically, navigating potential tensions that can arise within it.more » « less

These narratives explore what it might entail to begin school–university partnerships towards the goal of transformative social changes through the voices of two women scholars of color. Using two school–university partnerships as focal cases, we unpack the complexity, tensions, and possibilities that arise through collaborations driven by the objective to promote new and more just forms of science learning within public schools. In this article, we use three key dimensions of participatory design research (namely, critical historicity, power, and relationality) as analytical lenses through which to reflect upon school–university partnerships that we are in the beginning stages of forming. Through this methodology, we shed light on: (a) the historical genealogies of equity-oriented work and (b) the tensions that we encountered as we strived for beginning partnerships with K-12 schools. These narratives unveil the dynamic and contentious nature of forming school–university partnerships that always occurs within a sociopolitical landscape impacted by intersecting and powered identity markers, including those around race, gender, language, culture, and status. We provide specific recommendations for supporting education researchers who aspire to transform the learning of sciences at schools through a collaborative and sustainable partnership. These recommendations include ideas around how to collectively generate goals with schools centered on transformative science learning; attention to the role of language and race in shaping partnership role-remediation; and creating infrastructure for developing school–university partnerships toward transformative social changes, including financial, human and relational resources, as well as new forms of recognition systems.more » « less

Despite increasing awareness about the role of classroom assessments in perpetuating educational inequities, the research community continues to struggle with how to support teachers to design and use classroom assessments for achieving equity. In response to recent calls to better connect learning theory to the design of classroom assessments, we explore the links among contemporary learning theories, classroom assessments, equity, and teachers’ professional learning. Building a conceptual argument that we should shift our attention from assessment tasks to a classroom activity system to better support minoritized students’ learning via classroom assessment, we examine how teachers participate in assessment codesign activities in two research-practice partnerships (RPPs), and then identify emerging tensions in relation to promoting equity. Each RPP drew upon contemporary learning theories—sociocognitive and sociocultural learning theories, respectively—to create a coherent system of curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The examples show that the tensions emerging from each project are at least partially related to the learning theory that led the researchers to set up professional learning settings in a particular way. Our findings suggest that managing these tensions is an inherent part of the work as researchers seek to support equitable student learning. We discuss specific implications for the assessment community.more » « less
