Advances in robotics represent a potential shift in the construction industry. Construction planning is planned based on craft work; it is necessary to emphasize external factors such as construction robotics. Improving constructability can enhance design-phase construction opportunities, thereby expanding the potential scope of robot operations. However, robotics are often neglected concerning constructability. Previous studies on constructability concentrated on human-based construction methods; hence, gaps remain in assessing constructability for robotics. To minimize the barriers in robotic construction, this paper presents a method for using a rule-based framework for robotic constructability assessment checks with the help of BIM. Focusing on CANVAS—a drywall finishing robot—this paper applies a BIM-based object-oriented model integrating with ROS to utilize constructability reasoning about robotic operations. A model of rule-checking for robotics in the case study is demonstrated and tested. The availability of design information in the model containing robotics is discussed, showing the need for assessing robotics-related constructability information to support an automated review of robotic constructability assessment. This paper applies a case study to validate use of the framework for robotic constructability assessment in the design phase, leading to an automated constructability assessment of construction robotics.

Constructability assessment for robotics in construction
Advances in construction robotics represent a potential shift in building design and construction. In general, construction robotics are usually deployed directly onto construction sites without systematically evaluating the design constructability for robotic applications. Literature on constructability suggest that ignoring it during design will cause rework, inefficiency, and higher cost. Although previous studies have widely discussed design constructability, they mainly focus on traditional human craft-based construction methods. Whereas a gap still exists in design constructability assessment for construction robotics. This paper presents an initial analytical framework for constructability assessment for construction robotics during the design phase. Specifically, we summarize factors that impact robotic constructability based on robotic features, design features, work constraints, and piloted an automated constructability checking system for robotics. Additionally, this study takes CANVAS, a drywall finishing robot, as case study to create a framework in simulation environment and the results demonstrate the potential value of the proposed framework.

Challenged by the prevalent workforce shortage, the construction industry is picking up interest in using robotic arms in construction operations, especially in the context of modular construction and prefabrication. However, the lack of systematic investigations into integrating robotic arms with mobile systems to enhance mobility and operational range has been identified as one main research gap. Stationary robotic arms have inherent limitations in their range, making mobility a critical need. To address that issue, in this paper, the authors proposed a mobile construction robotic system to facilitate their use in the automation of timber frame assembly operation. The authors simulated the system to assess the interactions and coordination among its various components, and to identify potential areas for improvement. This study showcased the effectiveness of the new system design in improving the timber construction automation process and reveals its potential for further exploration in the realm of mobile construction robotics.more » « less

Issa, R. (Ed.)The construction industry has traditionally been a labor-intensive industry. Typically, labor cost takes a significant portion of the total project cost. In spite of the good pay, there was a big gap recently between demand and supply in construction trades position. A survey shows that more than 80% of construction companies in the Midwest of US are facing workforce shortage and suffering in finding enough skilled trades people to hire. This workforce shortage is also nationwide or even worldwide in many places. Construction automation provides a potential solution to mitigate this problem by seeking to replace some of the demanding, repetitive, and/or dangerous construction operations with robotic automation. Currently, robots have been used in bricklaying or heavy-lifting operations in the industry, and other uses remain to be explored. In this paper, the authors proposed a feasibility breakdown structure (FBS)-based robotic system method that can be used to test the feasibility of performing target construction operations with specific robotic systems, including a top-down work breakdown structure and a bottom-up set of feasibility analysis components based on literature search and/or simulation. The proposed method was demonstrated in testing the use of a KUKA robot and a Fetch robot to perform rebar mesh construction. Results showed that the overall workflow is feasible, whereas certain limitations presented in path planning. In addition, a smooth and timely information flow from the Fetch robot sensor and computer vision-based control to the two robots for a coordinated path planning and cooperation is critical for such constructability.more » « less

(Ed.)Construction, the last major analog and craft manufacturing industry, is showing early signs of industrialization through the emergence of new robotic and automated systems that can perform construction tasks in situ. While much is understood about the technical and economic challenges to be overcome for widespread adoption of robotics, less is known about the human barriers to adoption, and much less is summarized. Considering the amount of human cooperation required by existing robotic applications, a comprehensive review of barriers that are cognitive or perceptual in nature using a systematic literature assessment methodology is warranted. However, such a review is not straightforward to design. While matters of cognition and perception as pertinent to construction and automation may be queried directly from the literature, there is no certainty that a review based on directly querying abstract phenomena (i.e., perception) could be comprehensive. Thus, systematically reviewing this topic calls for a robust methodology for the design of database queries. In this paper, we perform text analysis with the quanteda package for R in order to (1) understand the language composition of an initial review corpus, and (2) with that understanding design further queries to capture additional articles otherwise not possible through standard query design. Findings indicate that performing text analysis on a systematic review design can produce valuable insight into a review corpus and inform queries that capture additional unique literature relevant to the review.more » « less

Robotics and automation are still considered a novelty in the U.S. construction industry, as compared to manufacturing, despite its proven advantages for production. Due to the continuing advancement of technology needed, there are limited applications of robotics in construction to date. To better identify the potential tasks that would benefit from the use of robotics on construction sites, we consider methods for assessing the craft labor tasks that occur in construction. In this paper, we decompose construction tasks of an observed activity of installation of stone veneer system and compared two systems of categorizing the construction tasks based on value added assessment and lean (waste) assessment of tasks. The analysis compares the two categorization systems using a matrix which highlights consistency in the alignment of value adding tasks, such as final placement, as well as ineffective tasks with type two muda, but discrepancies emerge regarding the idea of contributory tasks related to logistical support of construction activities. The focus of the discussion is derived from the intersection of contributory tasks with type one muda tasks. The contributory tasks offer an opportunity to reduce the use of craft labor for wasteful tasks elimination by leveraging automation and robotics.more » « less
