Title: Lake bathymetry in Inigok, North Slope of Alaska, 2012
This dataset contains lake bathymetry measurements acquired in 2012 on six lakes [INI01, INI03, INI04, INI05, INI06, and INI07] in Inigok region in the North Slope of Alaska. The measurements were conducted with a Garmin GPSMAP 531s using variable settings for Tracking depending on lake size (e.g. time- vs. distance-based). For each lake there is a spreadsheet with latitude, longitude, and lake depth (in meters) for each measurement point.  more » « less

  1. This data was collected over 34 sampling trips during four summers (May-October), 2019-2022. 35 grid boxes were generated over Lake Mendota. Before each sampling effort, sample point locations were randomized within each grid box. Surface measurements were taken with an EXO multi-parameter sonde at a subset of the 35 grid boxes throughout Lake Mendota during each sampling trip. Measurements include temperature, conductivity, chlorophyll, phycocyanin, turbidity, dissolved organic material, ODO, pH, and pressure.

  2. This dataset contains ground penetrating radar (GPR) data acquired between April 27 and 28, 2019, on two drained lake basins (DLBs) [Three Creatures Basin and Deep Basin] and four lakes [Independent Fox Lake, INI01 Lake, INI04 Lake, and Lonely Wolf Lake] at Inigok region in the North Slope of Alaska. The measurements were made using Malå ProEx 800 megahertz (MHz) (GuidelineGeo, Sundbyberg, Sweden) antennas using common offset configuration. Raw GPR data of eight transects are provided in the .RAD3 format, along with the corresponding acquisition parameters (.RAD) and Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates (.COR) files. A spreadsheet with basic information and a Keyhole Markup Language (KML) file indicating the location of each transect are also provided. This dataset can be used to estimate snow properties.

  3. This dataset contains water quality measurements made on Green Lakes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and Lake Albion. Green Lake 4 was initially sampled in 2000 and is ongoing. Ongoing sampling of Green Lakes 1 was started in 2014 and ongoing sampling of Lake Albion was started in 2016. Water samples were collected for analysis of chlorophyll a and nutrient analysis (which is available in glvwatsolu.dm.data) and field measurements for pH, temperature, specific conductivity, dissolved oxygen (DO), % saturation, secchi depth, PAR. Secchi depth is recorded at the 0m row however it is a measurement of depth and so the units are meters. Most samples were collected between 0800 and 1200 MST. The first sampling date each summer occurs shortly after the ice had melted. Data are collected from an inflatable raft at the point of deepest depth or from the lake inlet and outlet when surface flow is present. The majority of chlorophyll-a the measurements were taken at the surface (0m), the metalimnion (3m), and the hypolimnion nine (usually 8-11m). However, additional measurements were taken for side projects of the long-term dataset during several of the years and are included in this dataset. Water samples from the metalimnion or hypolimnion were collected using a Van Dorne sampler, and surface samples were collected as grab samples from the water column surface, the inlet and outlet. Field measurements were conducted using a YSI either DO or multiple probe meter (2014-2017, YSI MPS 556)(2018-ongoing, YSI ProPlus) and a Li-Cor meter with a quantum sensor. Chlorophyll-a was extracted from filtered samples and absorbance was measured before and after acidification to quantify chlorophyll a concentration.

  4. The instrumented raft on Sparkling Lake is equipped with a dissolved oxygen and CO2 sensors, a thermistor chain, and meteorological sensors that provide fundamental information on lake thermal structure, weather conditions, evaporation rates, and lake metabolism. Estimating the flux of solutes to and from lakes requires accurate water budgets. Evaporation rates are a critical component of the water budget of lakes. Data from the instrumented raft on Sparkling Lake includes micrometeorological parameters from which evaporation can be calculated. Raft measurements of relative humidity and air temperature (2m height), wind velocity (2m) ,and water temperatures (from thermistors placed throughout the water column at intervals varying from 0.5 to 3m) are combined with measurements of total long-wave and short-wave radiation data from a nearby shore station to determine evaporation by the energy budget technique. Comparable evaporation estimates from mass transfer techniques are calibrated against energy budget estimates to produce a lake-specific mass transfer coefficient for use in estimating evaporation rates. After correcting for flux to or from the atmosphere and vertical mixing within the water column, high frequency measurements of dissolved gases such as carbon dioxide and oxygen can be used to estimate gross primary productivity, respiration, and net ecosystem productivity, the basic components of whole lake metabolism. Other parameters measured include precipitation, wind direction (beginning in 2008), and barometric pressure (beginning in 2008). Sampling Frequency: one minute with hourly and daily averages provided. Number of sites: 1.

  5. Thaw depth was measured using a steel probe in the Imnavait Creek watershed, near Toolik Lake, Alaska. The thaw grid includes measurements made from the valley bottom (on both sides of the stream), up the hillslope. The thaw grid is near Imnavait water tracks 7 and 8, and measurements have been made from the 2003 season until present. At least two surveys are conducted each summer, on 2 July and on 11 August (plus or minus a couple of days on either side of those dates).
