Abstract β , for a sample of 36 faint star-forming galaxies atz ∼ 9–16 discovered in one of the deepest JWST NIRCam surveys to date, the Next Generation Deep Extragalactic Exploratory Public Survey. We use robust photometric measurements for UV-faint galaxies (down toM UV∼ −16), originally published in Leung et al., and measure values of the UV spectral slope via photometric power-law fitting to both the observed photometry and stellar population models obtained through spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting withBagpipes . We obtain a median and 68% confidence interval forβ from photometric power-law fitting of and from SED fitting, for the full sample. We show that when only two to three photometric detections are available, SED fitting has a lower scatter and reduced biases than photometric power-law fitting. We quantify this bias and find that after correction the median . We measure physical properties for our galaxies withBagpipes and find that our faint ( ) sample is low in mass ( ), fairly dust-poor ( mag), and modestly young ( yr) with a median star formation rate of . We find no strong evidence for ultrablue UV spectral slopes (β ∼ −3) within our sample, as would be expected for exotically metal-poor (Z /Z ⊙< 10−3) stellar populations with very high Lyman continuum escape fractions. Our observations are consistent with model predictions that galaxies of these stellar masses atz ∼ 9–16 should have only modestly low metallicities (Z /Z ⊙∼ 0.1–0.2). -
Abstract We present a reanalysis of reverberation mapping data from 2005 for the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151, supplemented with additional data from the literature to constrain the continuum variations over a significantly longer baseline than the original monitoring program. Modeling of the continuum light curve and the velocity-resolved variations across the H
β emission line constrains the geometry and kinematics of the broad line region (BLR). The BLR is well described by a very thick disk with similar opening angle (θ o ≈ 57°) and inclination angle (θ i ≈ 58°), suggesting that our sight line toward the innermost central engine skims just above the surface of the BLR. The inclination is consistent with constraints from geometric modeling of the narrow-line region, and the similarity between the inclination and opening angles is intriguing given previous studies of NGC 4151 that suggest BLR gas has been observed temporarily eclipsing the X-ray source. The BLR kinematics are dominated by eccentric bound orbits, with ∼10% of the orbits preferring near-circular motions. With the BLR geometry and kinematics constrained, the models provide an independent and direct black hole mass measurement of orM ⊙, which is in good agreement with mass measurements from stellar dynamical modeling and gas dynamical modeling. NGC 4151 is one of the few nearby broad-lined Seyferts where the black hole mass may be measured via multiple independent techniques, and it provides an important test case for investigating potential systematics that could affect the black hole mass scales used in the local universe and for high-redshift quasars. -
Abstract We describe the results of a new reverberation mapping program focused on the nearby Seyfert galaxy NGC 3227. Photometric and spectroscopic monitoring was carried out from 2022 December to 2023 June with the Las Cumbres Observatory network of telescopes. We detected time delays in several optical broad emission lines, with H
β having the longest delay at days and Heii having the shortest delay with days. We also detect velocity-resolved behavior of the Hβ emission line, with different line-of-sight velocities corresponding to different observed time delays. Combining the integrated Hβ time delay with the width of the variable component of the emission line and a standard scale factor suggests a black hole mass ofM ⊙. Modeling of the full velocity-resolved response of the Hβ emission line with the phenomenological codeCARAMEL finds a similar mass ofM ⊙and suggests that the Hβ -emitting broad-line region (BLR) may be represented by a biconical or flared disk structure that we are viewing at an inclination angle ofθ i ≈ 33° and with gas motions that are dominated by rotation. The new photoionization-based BLR modeling toolBELMAC finds general agreement with the observations when assuming the best-fitCARAMEL results; however,BELMAC prefers a thick-disk geometry and kinematics that are equally composed of rotation and inflow. Both codes infer a radially extended and flattened BLR that is not outflowing. -
Abstract Cosmic reionization was the last major phase transition of hydrogen from neutral to highly ionized in the intergalactic medium (IGM). Current observations show that the IGM is significantly neutral at
z > 7 and largely ionized byz ∼ 5.5. However, most methods to measure the IGM neutral fraction are highly model dependent and are limited to when the volume-averaged neutral fraction of the IGM is either relatively low ( ) or close to unity ( ). In particular, the neutral fraction evolution of the IGM at the critical redshift range ofz = 6–7 is poorly constrained. We present new constraints on atz ∼ 5.1–6.8 by analyzing deep optical spectra of 53 quasars at 5.73 <z < 7.09. We derive model-independent upper limits on the neutral hydrogen fraction based on the fraction of “dark” pixels identified in the Lyα and Lyβ forests, without any assumptions on the IGM model or the intrinsic shape of the quasar continuum. They are the first model-independent constraints on the IGM neutral hydrogen fraction atz ∼ 6.2–6.8 using quasar absorption measurements. Our results give upper limits of (1σ ), (1σ ), and (1σ ). The dark pixel fractions atz > 6.1 are consistent with the redshift evolution of the neutral fraction of the IGM derived from Planck 2018. -
ALMA Reveals Extended Cool Gas and Hot Ionized Outflows in a Typical Star-forming Galaxy at Z = 7.13
Abstract We present spatially resolved morphological properties of [C
II ] 158μ m, [OIII ] 88μ m, dust, and rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) continuum emission for A1689-zD1, a strongly lensed, sub-L* galaxy atz = 7.13, by utilizing deep Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations. While the [OIII ] line and UV continuum are compact, the [CII ] line is extended up to a radius ofr ∼ 12 kpc. Using multi-band rest-frame far-infrared continuum data ranging from 52 to 400μ m, we find an average dust temperature and emissivity index of K and , respectively, across the galaxy. We find slight differences in the dust continuum profiles at different wavelengths, which may indicate that the dust temperature decreases with distance. We map the star formation rate (SFR) via IR and UV luminosities and determine a total SFR of 37 ± 1M ⊙yr−1with an obscured fraction of 87%. While the [OIII ] line is a good tracer of the SFR, the [CII ] line shows deviation from the localL [CII ]-SFR relations in the outskirts of the galaxy. Finally, we observe a clear difference in the line profile between [CII ] and [OIII ], with significant residuals (∼5σ ) in the [OIII ] line spectrum after subtracting a single Gaussian model. This suggests a possible origin of the extended [CII ] structure from the cooling of hot ionized outflows. The extended [CII ] and high-velocity [OIII ] emission may both contribute in part to the highL [OIII ]/L [CII ]ratios recently reported inz > 6 galaxies.
