Title: Two loop mass renormalisation in heterotic string theory: NS states
A<sc>bstract</sc> In this work computation of the renormalised mass at two loop order for the NS sector of heterotic string theory is attempted. We first implement the vertical integration prescription for choosing a section avoiding the spurious poles due to the presence of a required number of picture changing operators. As a result the relevant amplitude on genus 2 Riemann surface can be written as a boundary term. We then identify the 1PI region of the moduli space having chosen a gluing compatible local coordinates around the external punctures. We also identify the relevant integrands and the relevant region of integration for the modular parameters at the boundary.  more » « less

  1. A<sc>bstract</sc> We consider the problem of defining a microcanonical thermofield double state at fixed energy and angular momentum from the gravitational path integral. A semiclassical approximation to this state is obtained by imposing a mixed boundary condition on an initial time surface. We analyze the corresponding boundary value problem and gravitational action. The overlap of this state with the canonical thermofield double state, which is interpreted as the Hartle-Hawking wavefunction of an eternal black hole in a mini-superspace approximation, is calculated semiclassically. The relevant saddlepoint is a higher-dimensional, rotating generalization of the wedge geometry that has been studied in two-dimensional gravity. Along the way we discuss a new corner term in the gravitational action that arises at a rotating horizon.

  2. A<sc>bstract</sc> We give a general construction relating Narain rational conformal field theories (RCFTs) and associated 3d Chern-Simons (CS) theories to quantum stabilizer codes. Starting from an abelian CS theory with a fusion group consisting ofneven-order factors, we map a boundary RCFT to ann-qubit quantum code. When the relevant ’t Hooft anomalies vanish, we can orbifold our RCFTs and describe this gauging at the level of the code. Along the way, we give CFT interpretations of the code subspace and the Hilbert space of qubits while mapping error operations to CFT defect fields.

  3. A<sc>bstract</sc> The formulation of the S-matrix as a path integral with specified asymptotic boundary conditions naturally leads to the realization of a Carrollian partition function defined on the boundary of Minkowski space. This partition function, specified at past and future null infinity in the case of massless particles, generates Carrollian correlation functions that encode the S-matrix. We explore this connection, including the realization of symmetries, soft theorems arising from large gauge transformations, and the correspondence with standard momentum space amplitudes. This framework is also well-suited for embedding the Minkowski space S-matrix into the AdS/CFT duality in the large radius limit. In particular, we identify the AdS and Carrollian partition functions through a simple map between their respective asymptotic data, establishing a direct correspondence between the actions of symmetries on both sides. Our approach thus provides a coherent framework that ties together various topics extensively studied in recent and past literature.

  4. A<sc>bstract</sc> We study further the duality between semiclassical AdS3and formal CFT2ensembles. First, we study torus wormholes (Maldacena-Maoz wormholes with two torus boundaries) with one insertion or two insertions on each boundary and find that they give non-decaying contribution to the product of two torus one-point or two-point functions at late-time. Second, we study the ℤ2quotients of a torus wormhole such that the outcome has one boundary. We identify quotients that give non-decaying contributions to the torus two-point function at late-time. We comment on reflection (R) or time-reversal (T) symmetry vs. the combination RT that is a symmetry of any relativistic field theory. RT symmetry itself implies that to the extent that a relativistic quantum field theory exhibits random matrix statistics it should be of the GOE type for bosonic states and of the GSE type for fermionic states. We discuss related implications of these symmetries for wormholes.

Abstract We characterize the multiphase circumgalactic medium (CGM) and galaxy properties atz= 6.0–6.5 in four quasar fields from the James Webb Space Telescope A SPectroscopic survey of biased halos In the Reionization Era (ASPIRE) program. We use the Very Large Telescope/X-shooter spectra of quasar J0305–3150 to identify one new metal absorber atz= 6.2713 with multiple transitions (Oi, Mgii, Feii,and Cii). They are combined with the published absorbing systems in Davies et al. at the same redshift range to form a sample of nine metal absorbers atz= 6.03–6.49. We identify eight galaxies within 1000 km s−1and 350 kpc around the absorbing gas from the ASPIRE spectroscopic data, with their redshifts secured by [Oiii] (λλ4959, 5007) doublets and Hβemission lines. Our spectral energy distribution fitting indicates that the absorbing galaxies have stellar masses ranging from 107.2to 108.8Mand metallicity between 0.02 and 0.4 solar. Notably, thez= 6.2713 system in the J0305–3150 field resides in a galaxy overdensity region, which contains two (tentatively) merging galaxies within 350 kpc and seven galaxies within 1 Mpc. We measure the relative abundances ofαelements to iron ([α/Fe]) and find that the CGM gas in the most overdense region exhibits a lower [α/Fe] ratio. Our modeling of the galaxy’s chemical abundance favors a top-heavy stellar initial mass function and hints that we may be witnessing the contribution of the first generation of Population III stars to the CGM at the end of the reionization epoch.
