Title: More on torus wormholes in 3d gravity
Abstract We study further the duality between semiclassical AdS3and formal CFT2ensembles. First, we study torus wormholes (Maldacena-Maoz wormholes with two torus boundaries) with one insertion or two insertions on each boundary and find that they give non-decaying contribution to the product of two torus one-point or two-point functions at late-time. Second, we study the ℤ2quotients of a torus wormhole such that the outcome has one boundary. We identify quotients that give non-decaying contributions to the torus two-point function at late-time. We comment on reflection (R) or time-reversal (T) symmetry vs. the combination RT that is a symmetry of any relativistic field theory. RT symmetry itself implies that to the extent that a relativistic quantum field theory exhibits random matrix statistics it should be of the GOE type for bosonic states and of the GSE type for fermionic states. We discuss related implications of these symmetries for wormholes.  more » « less

  1. Abstract We study 3d quantum gravity with two asymptotically anti-de Sitter regions, in particular, using its relation with coupled Alekseev-Shatashvili theories and Liouville theory. Expressions for the Hartle-Hawking state, thermal 2n-point functions, torus wormhole correlators and Wheeler-DeWitt wavefunctions in different bases are obtained using the ZZ boundary states in Liouville theory. Exact results in 2d Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity are uplifted to 3d gravity, with two copies of Liouville theory in 3d gravity playing a similar role as Schwarzian theory in JT gravity. The connection between 3d gravity and the Liouville ZZ boundary states are manifested by viewing BTZ black holes as Maldacena-Maoz wormholes, with the two wormhole boundaries glued along the ZZ boundaries. In this work, we also study the factorization problem of the Hartle-Hawking state in 3d gravity. With the relevant defect operator that imposes the necessary topological constraint for contractibility, the trace formula in gravity is modified in computing the entanglement entropy. This trace matches with the one from von Neumann algebra considerations, further reproducing the Bekenstein-Hawking area formula from entanglement entropy. Lastly, we propose a calculation for off-shell geometrical quantities that are responsible for the ramp behavior in the late time two-point functions, which follows from the understanding of the Liouville FZZT boundary states in the context of 3d gravity, and the identification between Verlinde loop operators in Liouville theory and “baby universe” operators in 3d gravity.

  2. Abstract We interpret appropriate families of Euclidean wormhole solutions of AdS3gravity in individual 2d CFTs as replica wormholes described by branching around the time-symmetric apparent horizons of black holes sourced by the backreaction of heavy point particles. These wormholes help describe a rich formalism to coarse grain pure states in 2d CFTs dual to the black hole geometries because the wormhole amplitudes match with the Renyi entropies of CFT states obtained by decohering the pure states in a specific way. This formalism can be generalised to coarse grain pure states in several copies of the CFT dual to multi-boundary black holes using wormhole solutions with higher genus boundaries using which we illustrate that coarse graining away the interior of multi-boundary black holes sets the mutual information between any two copies of the dual CFT to zero. Furthermore, this formalism of coarse graining pure states can be extended to decohere transition matrices between pure states which helps interpret more general families of wormhole solutions including those with non replica-symmetric boundary conditions in individual CFTs. The pseudo entropy of the decohered transition matrices has interesting holographic interpretation in terms of the area of minimal surfaces on appropriate black hole or wormhole geometries. The wormhole solutions which show up in the coarse graining formalism also compute the Renyi entropies of Hawking radiation after the Page time in a setup which generalizes the West Coast model to 3d gravity. Using this setup, we discuss the evaporation of one-sided black holes sourced by massive point particles and multi-boundary black holes in 3d gravity.

  3. Abstract We study how entanglement spreads in the boundary duals of finite-cutoff three-dimensional theories with positive, negative and zero cosmological constant, the$$ T\overline{T} $$ T T ¯ + Λ2two-dimensional theories. We first study the Hawking-Page transition in all three cases, and find that there is a transition in all three scenarios at the temperature where the lengths of the two cycles of the torus are the same. We then study the entanglement entropy in the thermofield double states above the Hawking-Page transition, of regions symmetrically placed on the two boundaries. We consider the case where the region is one interval on each side, and the case where it is two intervals on each side. We give an entanglement tsunami interpretation of the time-evolution of the entanglement entropies.

  4. Abstract As shown by Louko and Sorkin in 1995, topology change in Lorentzian signature involves spacetimes with singular points, which they called crotches. We modify their construction to obtain Lorentzian semiclassical wormholes in asymptotically AdS. These solutions are obtained by inserting crotches on known saddles, like the double-cone or multiple copies of the Lorentzian black hole. The crotches implement swap-identifications, and are classically located near an extremal surface. The resulting Lorentzian wormholes have an instanton action equal to their area, which is responsible for topological suppression in any number of dimensions. We conjecture that including such Lorentzian wormhole spacetimes is equivalent to path integrating over all mostly Euclidean smooth spacetimes. We present evidence for this by reproducing semiclassical features of the genus expansion of the spectral form factor, and of a late-time two point function, by summing over the moduli space of Lorentzian wormholes. As a final piece of evidence, we discuss the Lorentzian version of West-Coast replica wormholes.

  5. Abstract We study two-point functions of symmetric traceless local operators in the bulk of de Sitter spacetime. We derive the Källén-Lehmann spectral decomposition for any spin and show that unitarity implies its spectral densities are nonnegative. In addition, we recover the Källén-Lehmann decomposition in Minkowski space by taking the flat space limit. Using harmonic analysis and the Wick rotation to Euclidean Anti de Sitter, we derive an inversion formula to compute the spectral densities. Using the inversion formula, we relate the analytic structure of the spectral densities to the late-time boundary operator content. We apply our technical tools to study two-point functions of composite operators in free and weakly coupled theories. In the weakly coupled case, we show how the Källén-Lehmann decomposition is useful to find the anomalous dimensions of the late-time boundary operators. We also derive the Källén-Lehmann representation of two-point functions of spinning primary operators of a Conformal Field Theory on de Sitter.
