Abstract The genericity of Arnold diffusion in the analytic category is an open problem. In this paper, we study this problem in the followinga prioriunstable Hamiltonian system with a time-periodic perturbation where , withn,d⩾ 1,Viare Morse potentials, andɛis a small non-zero parameter. The unperturbed Hamiltonian is not necessarily convex, and the induced inner dynamics does not need to satisfy a twist condition. Using geometric methods we prove that Arnold diffusion occurs for generic analytic perturbationsH1. Indeed, the set of admissibleH1isCωdense andC3open (a fortiori,Cωopen). Our perturbative technique for the genericity is valid in theCktopology for allk∈ [3, ∞) ∪ {∞,ω}.

                            A Nascent Tidal Dwarf Galaxy Forming within the Northern H i Streamer of M82
                        
                    
    
            Abstract We identify a ∼600 pc wide region of active star formation located within a tidal streamer of M82 via Hαemission (FHα∼ 6.5 × 10−14erg s−1cm−2), using a pathfinder instrument based on the Dragonfly Telephoto Array. The object is kinematically decoupled from the disk of M82 as confirmed via Keck/LRIS spectroscopy and is spatially and kinematically coincident with an overdensity of Hiand molecular hydrogen within the “northern Histreamer” induced by the passage of M81 several hundred Myr ago. From Hidata, we estimate that ∼5 × 107M⊙of gas is present in the specific overdensity coincident with the Hαsource. The object’s derived metallicity (12+ ), position within a gas-rich tidal feature, and morphology (600 pc diameter with multiple star-forming clumps), indicate that it is likely a tidal dwarf galaxy in the earliest stages of formation.

            Abstract We use the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array to detect CO(1–0), CO(3–2), and rest-frame 349 GHz continuum emission from an Hi-selected galaxy, DLA1020+2733g, atz ≈ 2.3568 in the field of thez= 2.3553 damped Lyαabsorber (DLA) toward QSO J1020+2733. The VLA CO(1–0) detection yields a molecular gas mass of (2.84 ± 0.42) × 1011 × (αCO/4.36)M⊙, the largest ever measured in an Hi-selected galaxy. The DLA metallicity is +0.28 ± 0.16, from the Zniiλ2026 absorption line detected in a Keck Echellette Spectrograph and Imager spectrum. This continues the trend of high-metallicity DLAs being frequently associated with massive galaxies. We obtain a star formation rate (SFR) of ≲400M⊙yr−1from the rest-frame 349 GHz continuum emission and a relatively long molecular gas depletion timescale of ≳0.6 Gyr. The excitation of theJ= 3 rotational level is subthermal, with , suggesting that DLA1020+2733g has a low SFR surface density. The large velocity spread of the CO lines, ≈500 km s−1, and the long molecular gas depletion timescale suggest that DLA1020+2733g is likely to be a cold rotating-disk galaxy.more » « less

            Abstract We present a detection of 21 cm emission from large-scale structure (LSS) between redshift 0.78 and 1.43 made with the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment. Radio observations acquired over 102 nights are used to construct maps that are foreground filtered and stacked on the angular and spectral locations of luminous red galaxies (LRGs), emission-line galaxies (ELGs), and quasars (QSOs) from the eBOSS clustering catalogs. We find decisive evidence for a detection when stacking on all three tracers of LSS, with the logarithm of the Bayes factor equal to 18.9 (LRG), 10.8 (ELG), and 56.3 (QSO). An alternative frequentist interpretation, based on the likelihood ratio test, yields a detection significance of 7.1σ(LRG), 5.7σ(ELG), and 11.1σ(QSO). These are the first 21 cm intensity mapping measurements made with an interferometer. We constrain the effective clustering amplitude of neutral hydrogen (Hi), defined as , where ΩHiis the cosmic abundance of Hi,bHiis the linear bias of Hi, and 〈fμ2〉 = 0.552 encodes the effect of redshift-space distortions at linear order. We find for LRGs (z= 0.84), for ELGs (z= 0.96), and for QSOs (z= 1.20), with constraints limited by modeling uncertainties at nonlinear scales. We are also sensitive to bias in the spectroscopic redshifts of each tracer, and we find a nonzero bias Δv= − 66 ± 20 km s−1for the QSOs. We split the QSO catalog into three redshift bins and have a decisive detection in each, with the upper bin atz= 1.30 producing the highest-redshift 21 cm intensity mapping measurement thus far.more » « less

            Abstract We measure the CO-to-H2conversion factor (αCO) in 37 galaxies at 2 kpc resolution, using the dust surface density inferred from far-infrared emission as a tracer of the gas surface density and assuming a constant dust-to-metal ratio. In total, we have ∼790 and ∼610 independent measurements ofαCOfor CO (2–1) and (1–0), respectively. The mean values forαCO (2–1)andαCO (1–0)are and , respectively. The CO-intensity-weighted mean is 5.69 forαCO (2–1)and 3.33 forαCO (1–0). We examine howαCOscales with several physical quantities, e.g., the star formation rate (SFR), stellar mass, and dust-mass-weighted average interstellar radiation field strength ( ). Among them, , ΣSFR, and the integrated CO intensity (WCO) have the strongest anticorrelation with spatially resolvedαCO. We provide linear regression results toαCOfor all quantities tested. At galaxy-integrated scales, we observe significant correlations betweenαCOandWCO, metallicity, , and ΣSFR. We also find thatαCOin each galaxy decreases with the stellar mass surface density (Σ⋆) in high-surface-density regions (Σ⋆≥ 100M⊙pc−2), following the power-law relations and . The power-law index is insensitive to the assumed dust-to-metal ratio. We interpret the decrease inαCOwith increasing Σ⋆as a result of higher velocity dispersion compared to isolated, self-gravitating clouds due to the additional gravitational force from stellar sources, which leads to the reduction inαCO. The decrease inαCOat high Σ⋆is important for accurately assessing molecular gas content and star formation efficiency in the centers of galaxies, which bridge “Milky Way–like” to “starburst-like” conversion factors.more » « less

            Abstract We present measurements of the neutral atomic hydrogen (Hi) mass function (HiMF) and cosmic Hidensity (ΩH I) at 0 ≤z≤ 0.088 from the Looking at the Distant Universe with MeerKAT Array (LADUMA) survey. Using LADUMA Data Release 1 (DR1), we analyze the HiMF via a new “recovery matrix” method that we benchmark against a more traditional modified maximum likelihood (MML) method. Our analysis, which implements a forward modeling approach, corrects for survey incompleteness and uses extensive synthetic source injections to ensure robust estimates of the HiMF parameters and their associated uncertainties. This new method tracks the recovery of sources in mass bins different from those in which they were injected and incorporates a Poisson likelihood in the forward modeling process, allowing it to correctly handle uncertainties in bins with few or no detections. The application of our analysis to a high-purity subsample of the LADUMA DR1 spectral line catalog in turn mitigates any possible biases that could result from the inconsistent treatment of synthetic and real sources. For the surveyed redshift range, the recovered Schechter function normalization, low-mass slope, and “knee” mass are Mpc−3dex−1, , and , respectively, which together imply a comoving cosmic Hidensity of . Our results show consistency between recovery matrix and MML methods and with previous low-redshift studies, giving confidence that the cosmic volume probed by LADUMA, even at low redshifts, is not an outlier in terms of its Hicontent.more » « less
