ALMA Reveals Extended Cool Gas and Hot Ionized Outflows in a Typical Star-forming Galaxy at Z = 7.13
Abstract II ] 158μ m, [OIII ] 88μ m, dust, and rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) continuum emission for A1689-zD1, a strongly lensed, sub-L* galaxy atz = 7.13, by utilizing deep Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations. While the [OIII ] line and UV continuum are compact, the [CII ] line is extended up to a radius ofr ∼ 12 kpc. Using multi-band rest-frame far-infrared continuum data ranging from 52 to 400μ m, we find an average dust temperature and emissivity index of K and , respectively, across the galaxy. We find slight differences in the dust continuum profiles at different wavelengths, which may indicate that the dust temperature decreases with distance. We map the star formation rate (SFR) via IR and UV luminosities and determine a total SFR of 37 ± 1M ⊙yr−1with an obscured fraction of 87%. While the [OIII ] line is a good tracer of the SFR, the [CII ] line shows deviation from the localL [CII ]-SFR relations in the outskirts of the galaxy. Finally, we observe a clear difference in the line profile between [CII ] and [OIII ], with significant residuals (∼5σ ) in the [OIII ] line spectrum after subtracting a single Gaussian model. This suggests a possible origin of the extended [CII ] structure from the cooling of hot ionized outflows. The extended [CII ] and high-velocity [OIII ] emission may both contribute in part to the highL [OIII ]/L [CII ]ratios recently reported inz > 6 galaxies. -
Abstract With ΣSFR∼ 4200
M ⊙yr−1kpc−2, SPT 0346–52 (z = 5.7) is the most intensely star-forming galaxy discovered by the South Pole Telescope. In this paper, we expand on previous spatially resolved studies, using ALMA observations of dust continuum, [Nii ] 205μ m, [Cii ] 158μ m, [Oi ] 146μ m, and undetected [Nii ] 122μ m and [Oi ] 63μ m emission to study the multiphase interstellar medium (ISM) in SPT 0346–52. We use pixelated, visibility-based lens modeling to reconstruct the source-plane emission. We also model the source-plane emission using the photoionization codecloudy and find a supersolar metallicity system. We calculateT dust= 48.3 K andλ peak= 80μ m and see line deficits in all five lines. The ionized gas is less dense than comparable galaxies, withn e < 32 cm−3, while ∼20% of the [Cii ] 158μ m emission originates from the ionized phase of the ISM. We also calculate the masses of several phases of the ISM. We find that molecular gas dominates the mass of the ISM in SPT 0346–52, with the molecular gas mass ∼4× higher than the neutral atomic gas mass and ∼100× higher than the ionized gas mass. -
Abstract We report the discovery of two companion sources to a strongly lensed galaxy SPT0418-47 (“ring”) at redshift 4.225, targeted by the JWST Early Release Science program. We confirm that these sources are at a similar redshift to the ring based on H
α detected in the NIRSpec spectrum and [Cii ]λ 158μ m line from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). Using multiple spectral lines detected in JWST/NIRSpec, the rest-frame optical to infrared images from NIRCam and MIRI and far-infrared dust continuum detected by ALMA, we argue that the newly discovered sources are actually lensed images of the same companion galaxy SPT0418-SE, hereafter referred to “SE,” located within 5 kpc in the source plane of the ring. The star formation rate derived using [Cii ] and the dust continuum puts a lower limit of 17M ☉yr−1, while the SFRHα is estimated to be >2 times lower, thereby confirming that SE is a dust-obscured star-forming galaxy. Analysis using optical strong line diagnostics suggests that SE has near-solar elemental abundance, while the ring appears to have supersolar metallicity O/H and N/O. We attempt to reconcile the high metallicity in this system by invoking early onset of star formation with continuous high star-forming efficiency or by suggesting that optical strong line diagnostics need revision at high redshift. We suggest that SPT0418-47 resides in a massive dark-matter halo with yet-to-be-discovered neighbors. This work highlights the importance of joint analysis of JWST and ALMA data for a deep and complete picture of the early universe. -
Abstract We use medium-resolution Keck/Echellette Spectrograph and Imager spectroscopy of bright quasars to study cool gas traced by Ca
ii λλ 3934, 3969 and Nai λλ 5891, 5897 absorption in the interstellar/circumgalactic media of 21 foreground star-forming galaxies at redshifts 0.03 <z < 0.20 with stellar masses 7.4 ≤ logM */M ⊙≤ 10.6. The quasar–galaxy pairs were drawn from a unique sample of Sloan Digital Sky Survey quasar spectra with intervening nebular emission, and thus have exceptionally close impact parameters (R ⊥< 13 kpc). The strength of this line emission implies that the galaxies’ star formation rates (SFRs) span a broad range, with several lying well above the star-forming sequence. We use Voigt profile modeling to derive column densities and component velocities for each absorber, finding that column densitiesN (Caii ) > 1012.5cm−2(N (Nai ) > 1012.0cm−2) occur with an incidencef C(Caii ) = 0.63+0.10−0.11(f C(Nai ) = 0.57+0.10−0.11). We find no evidence for a dependence off Cor the rest-frame equivalent widthsW r (Caii K) orW r (Nai 5891) onR ⊥orM *. Instead,W r (Caii K) is correlated with local SFR at >3σ significance, suggesting that Caii traces star formation-driven outflows. While most of the absorbers have velocities within ±50 km s−1of the host redshift, their velocity widths (characterized by Δv 90) are universally 30–177 km s−1larger than that implied by tilted-ring modeling of the velocities of interstellar material. These kinematics must trace galactic fountain flows and demonstrate that they persist atR ⊥> 5 kpc. Finally, we assess the relationship between dust reddening andW r (Caii K) (W r (Nai 5891)), finding that 33% (24%) of the absorbers are inconsistent with the best-fit Milky WayE (B −V)-W r relations at >3σ significance. -
Abstract M82 is an archetypal starburst galaxy in the local Universe. The central burst of star formation, thought to be triggered by M82's interaction with other members in the M81 group, is driving a multiphase galaxy-scale wind away from the plane of the disk that has been studied across the electromagnetic spectrum. Here, we present new velocity-resolved observations of the [C
ii ] 158μ m line in the central disk and the southern outflow of M82 using the upGREAT instrument on board SOFIA. We also report the first detections of velocity-resolved (ΔV = 10 km s−1) [Cii ] emission in the outflow of M82 at projected distances of ≈1–2 kpc south of the galaxy center. We compare the [Cii ] line profiles to observations of CO and Hi and find that likely the majority (>55%) of the [Cii ] emission in the outflow is associated with the neutral atomic medium. We find that the fraction of [Cii ] actually outflowing from M82 is small compared to the bulk gas outside the midplane (which may be in a halo or tidal streamers), which has important implications for observations of [Cii ] outflows at higher redshift. Finally, by comparing the observed ratio of the [Cii ] and CO intensities to models of photodissociation regions, we estimate that the far-ultraviolet (FUV) radiation field in the disk is ∼103.5G 0, in agreement with previous estimates. In the outflow, however, the FUV radiation field is 2–3 orders of magnitudes lower, which may explain the high fraction of [Cii ] arising from the neutral medium in the wind.
