ABSTRACT Under an adaptive hypothesis, the reciprocal influence between mutualistic plants and frugivores is expected to result in suites of matching frugivore and plant traits that structure fruit consumption. Recent work has suggested fruit traits can represent adaptations to broad groups of functionally similar frugivores, but the role of frugivore traits and within‐species variation in structuring fruit consumption is less understood. To address these knowledge gaps, we assess the presence of reciprocal trait matching for the mutualistic ecological network comprising ofCarolliabats that feed on and dispersePiperseeds. We used generalized joint attribute modeling (GJAM), a Bayesian modeling approach that simultaneously accounts for multiple sources of variance across trait types. In support of frugivore adaptation to their dietary composition and suggesting niche partitioning amongCarolliabats, we find differential consumption of a suite ofPiperspecies influenced by bat traits such as body size; however, thePipermorphological traits considered had no effect on bat consumption. Slow evolutionary rates, dispersal by other vertebrates, and unexamined fruit traits, such asPiperchemical bouquets, may explain the lack of association between batPiperconsumption and fruit morphological traits. We have identified a potential asymmetric influence of frugivore traits on plant–frugivore interactions, providing a template for future trait analyses of plant–animal networks. As intraspecific trait variation is rarely included in studies on trait matching, this paper contributes to closing that important knowledge gap.

Isolation of new neolignans and an unusual meroterpenoid from Piper cabagranum
A novel meroterpenoid cabagranin D was isolated with related neolignans cabagranins A–C from the leaves ofPiper cabagranum(Costa Rica). Cabagranins A–C represent the first examples of 3,3′-neolignans isolated from the plant genusPiper, and the meroterpenoid cabagranin D displays an unprecedented Diels–Alder conjugate of an unsubstituted phenylpropenone and α-phellandrene. Details of the full structural elucidation of these compounds and a discussion of their potential biosynthetic relationships are presented.

Insect herbivory can be an important selective pressure and contribute substantially to local plant richness. As herbivory is the result of numerous ecological and evolutionary processes, such as complex insect population dynamics and evolution of plant antiherbivore defenses, it has been difficult to predict variation in herbivory across meaningful spatial scales. In the present work, we characterize patterns of herbivory on plants in a species‐rich and abundant tropical genus (Piper) across forests spanning 44° of latitude in the Neotropics. We modeled the effects of geography, climate, resource availability, andPiperspecies richness on the median, dispersion, and skew of generalist and specialist herbivory. By examining these multiple components of the distribution of herbivory, we were able to determine factors that increase biologically meaningful herbivory at the upper ends of the distribution (indicated by skew and dispersion). We observed a roughly twofold increase in median herbivory in humid relative to seasonal forests, which aligns with the hypothesis that precipitation seasonality plays a critical role in shaping interaction diversity within tropical ecosystems. Site level variables such as latitude, seasonality, and maximumPiperrichness explained the positive skew in herbivory at the local scale (plot level) better for assemblages ofPipercongeners than for a single species. Predictors that varied between local communities, such as resource availability and diversity, best explained the distribution of herbivory within sites, dampening broad patterns across latitude and climate and demonstrating why generalizations about gradients in herbivory have been elusive. The estimated population means, dispersion, and skew of herbivory responded differently to abiotic and biotic factors, illustrating the need for careful studies to explore distributions of herbivory and their effects on forest diversity.more » « less

Abstract We report sputtered [Pt/Co(dCo)/Cu]×15multilayers and their integration with superconducting Nb. Tuning the Co thicknessdCo = 0.6–1.2 nm transforms nearly square perpendicular hysteresis into wasp-waisted switching, while room-temperature magnetic force microscopy (MFM) shows a progression from sparse to dense worm-like domains. Hall measurements on thedCo = 1.2 nm stack reveal an antisymmetric excess Hall signal, obtained after subtracting the ordinary and anomalous components. Incorporating Nb layers of thickness 20 and 60 nm beneath the magnetic multilayer preserves wasp-waisted loops and MFM contrast, whereas a layer of 120 nm modifies the hysteresis loop. A 60 nm Nb layer above the magnetic multilayer reduces the MFM contrast. In low temperature magnetic field dependent MFM imaging, a progression from worm-like to isolated skyrmion-like domains is observed on the application of perpendicular field. Nb–[Pt/Co/Cu]×15heterostructures exhibit the expected suppression ofTcwith decreasing Nb thickness, with an additional reduction relative to single-layer Nb films. These results provide practical design rules, particularly layer order and Nb thickness, for integrating conventional superconductivity with magnetic multilayers.more » « less

Declines in biodiversity generated by anthropogenic stressors at both species and population levels can alter emergent processes instrumental to ecosystem function and resilience. As such, understanding the role of biodiversity in ecosystem function and its response to climate perturbation is increasingly important, especially in tropical systems where responses to changes in biodiversity are less predictable and more challenging to assess experimentally. Using large-scale transplant experiments conducted at five neotropical sites, we documented the impacts of changes in intraspecific and interspecific plant richness in the genusPiperon insect herbivory, insect richness, and ecosystem resilience to perturbations in water availability. We found that reductions of both intraspecific and interspecificPiperdiversity had measurable and site-specific effects on herbivory, herbivorous insect richness, and plant mortality. The responses of these ecosystem-relevant processes to reduced intraspecificPiperrichness were often similar in magnitude to the effects of reduced interspecific richness. Increased water availability reduced herbivory by 4.2% overall, and the response of herbivorous insect richness and herbivory to water availability were altered by both intra- and interspecific richness in a site-dependent manner. Our results underscore the role of intraspecific and interspecific richness as foundations of ecosystem function and the importance of community and location-specific contingencies in controlling function in complex tropical systems.more » « less

The discovery of bioactive natural products is often challenged by the complexity of isolating and characterizing active compounds within diverse mixtures. Previously, we introduced a 1H NMR-based weighted gene correlation network analysis (WGCNA) approach to identify spectral features linked to growth inhibitory activity of Piper (Piperaceae) leaf extracts against model plant, fungal, and bacterial organisms. This method enabled us to prioritize specific spectral features linked to bioactivity, offering a targeted approach to natural product discovery. In this study, we validate the predictive capacity of the WGCNA by isolating the compounds responsible for the bioactivity-associated resonances and confirming their antifungal efficacy. Using growth inhibition assays, we verified that the isolated compounds, including three novel antifungal agents, exhibited significant bioactivity. Notably, one of these compounds contains a rare imidazolium heterocyclic motif, marking a new structural class in Piper. These findings substantiate the 1H NMR-based WGCNA as a reliable tool for identifying structural types associated with biological activity, streamlining the process of discovering bioactive natural products in complex extracts.more » « less
