In a recent work, we have reported outstanding strength and work hardening exhibited by a metastable high entropy alloy (HEA), Fe42Mn28Co10Cr15Si5 (in at. %), undergoing the strain-induced martensitic transformation from metastable gamma austenite (γ) to stable epsilon martensite (ε). However, the alloy exhibited poor ductility, which was attributed to the presence of the brittle sigma (σ) phase in its microstructure. The present work reports the evolution of microstructure, strength, and ductility of a similar HEA, Fe38.5Mn20Co20Cr15Si5Cu1.5 (in at. %), designed to suppress the formation of σ phase. A cast and then rolled plate of the alloy was processed into four conditions by annealing for 10 and 30 min at 1100 °C and by friction stir processing (FSP) at tool rotation rates of 150 and 400 revolutions per minute (RPM) to facilitate detailed examinations of variable initial grain structures. Neutron diffraction and electron microscopy were employed to characterize the microstructure and texture evolution. The initial materials had variable grain size but nearly 100% γ structure. Diffusionless strain induced γ→ε phase transformation took place under compression with higher rate initially and slower rate at the later stages of deformation, independent on the initial grain size. The transformation facilitated part of plastic strain accommodation and rapid strain hardening owing to a transformation-induced dynamic Hall-Petch-type barrier effect, increase in dislocation density, and texture. The peak strength of nearly 2 GPa was achieved under compression using the structure created by double pass FSP (150 RPM followed by 150 RPM). Remarkably, the tensile elongation exhibited by the alloy was nearly 20% with fracture surfaces featuring a combination of ductile dimples and cleavage.

Assessing strength of phases in a quadruplex high entropy alloy via high-throughput nanoindentation to clarify origins of strain hardening
This paper describes the main findings from an experimental investigation into local and overall strength and fracture behavior of a microstructurally flexible, quadruplex, high entropy alloy (HEA), Fe42Mn28Co10Cr15Si5 (in at%). The alloy consists of metastable face-centered cubic austenite (g), stable hexagonal epsilon martensite (ε), stable body-centered cubic ferrite (a), and stable tetragonal sigma (σ) phases. The overall behavior of the alloy in compression features a great deal of plasticity and strain hardening before fracture. While the contents of diffusion created a and σ phases remain constant during deformation, the fraction of ε increases at the expanse of g due to the diffusionless strain induced γ→ε phase transformation. High-throughput nanoindentation mapping is used to assess the mechanical hardness of individual phases contributing to the plasticity and hardening of the alloy. Increasing the fraction of the dislocated ε phase during deformation due to the transformation is found to act as a secondary source of hardening because g and ε exhibit similar hardness at a given strain level. While these two phases exhibit moderate hardening during plasticity, significant softening is observed in σ owing to the phase fragmentation. While the phase transformation mechanism facilitates accommodation of the plasticity, the primary source of strain hardening in the alloy is the refinement of the structure during the transformation inducing a dynamic Hall-Petch-type barrier effect. Results pertaining to the evolution of microstructure and local behavior of the alloy under compression are presented and discussed clarifying the origins of strain hardening. While good under compression, the alloy poorly behaves under tension. Fracture surfaces after tension feature brittle micromechanisms of fracture. Such behavior is attributed to the presence of the brittle σ phase.

The yield strength of a CrCoNiSi0.3 medium-entropy alloy is significantly increased from 450 MPa (quasi-static, 0.001 s−1) to 1600 MPa (at a strain rate of 5000 s−1) under dynamic tension, with a considerable ductility of 60%. The high strain-rate sensitivity (SRS) of strength and work hardening is obtained, and the strength SRS reaches 0.408. The dominant deformation mechanisms are abundant multiple-twinning, increasing fractions of deformation twins and phase transformation from face-centered-cubic to hexagonal-close-packed (HCP) phases with a strain rate. A universal dislocation-hardened constitutive model considering the evolution of the twin and HCP transformation is established to predict the flow stress and microstructure evolution.more » « less

Single-phase body-centered cubic (bcc) refractory medium- or high-entropy alloys can retain compressive strength at elevated temperatures but suffer from extremely low tensile ductility and fracture toughness. We examined the strength and fracture toughness of a bcc refractory alloy, NbTaTiHf, from 77 to 1473 kelvin. This alloy’s behavior differed from that of comparable systems by having fracture toughness over 253 MPa·m1/2, which we attribute to a dynamic competition between screw and edge dislocations in controlling the plasticity at a crack tip. Whereas the glide and intersection of screw and mixed dislocations promotes strain hardening controlling uniform deformation, the coordinated slip of <111> edge dislocations with {110} and {112} glide planes prolongs nonuniform strain through formation of kink bands. These bands suppress strain hardening by reorienting microscale bands of the crystal along directions of higher resolved shear stress and continually nucleate to accommodate localized strain and distribute damage away from a crack tip.more » « less

In this work a transformation strain gradient enhancement is introduced into a phenomenological constitutive model for the pseudoelastic behavior of shape memory alloys. The constitutive model is able to capture several unique features of the constitutive response of these materials during the transformation between austenite and martensite during the pseudoelastic response. These features include the asymmetry in the initial transformation stresses in tension versus compression, the asymmetry in the transformation strains in tension and compression, and finally the asymmetry in the hardening behavior in tension and compression. In fact, experiments have shown that untrained NiTi exhibits hardening during its transformation in compression, but softening for tensile loading. It is this softening behavior that motivates the need for the introduction of the transformation strain gradient into the constitutive modeling. Transformation strain gradient effects are introduced via a phase variable that describes the extent of transformation. The free energy of the material then depends on gradients of the phase variable, which introduces a material length scale into the theory. The governing equation for the phase variable is developed from a microforce balance and continuum thermodynamics analysis. The model is implemented in the commercial finite element software Abaqus through user defined subroutines and several numerical simulations are performed to illustrate the model response and lack of numerical mesh-dependency of the results.more » « less

Abstract The individual effects of strain rate and temperature on the strain hardening rate of a quenched and partitioned steel have been examined. During quasistatic tests, resistive heating was used to simulate the deformation-induced heating that occurs during high-strain-rate deformation, while the deformation-induced martensitic transformation was tracked by a combination of x-ray and electron backscatter diffraction. Unique work hardening rates under various thermal–mechanical conditions are discussed, based on the balance between the concurrent dislocation slip and transformation-induced plasticity deformation mechanisms. The diffraction and strain hardening data suggest that the imposed strain rate and temperature exhibited dissonant influences on the martensitic phase transformation. Increasing the strain rate appeared to enhance the martensitic transformation, while increasing the temperature suppressed the martensitic transformation.more » « less
