Title: A MATHEMATICS MENTORING PROGRAM: POST-PANDEMIC
The purpose of this report is to share the supports created as part of a mathematics mentoring program in a mid-sized western university. The research is longitudinal, and the current paper will share results from the fourth (of six) years of a project. I use a mixed method approach to examining the efficacy of the mentoring program, and the results indicate that the program may have helped students through the pandemic and to shift back afterwards.  more » « less

  1. There are relatively few ongoing supports for novice computer science (CS) teachers, particularly focused on increasing teachers’ use of equitable and inclusive teaching practices. To address this need, we implemented a year-long, equity-focused peer mentoring program with 38 CS teachers across Wisconsin. Through design-based implementation research, we refined structures, streamlined activities, strengthened the focus on developing trust in mentoring partnerships, and created opportunities to build community among mentees. Pilot data suggests both mentees and mentors benefitted from the program, increasing their confidence in teaching and mentoring. In this experience report, we share lessons learned during our first two years of implementation.

  2. Peer mentoring is an integral part of our Cardinal Chemistry Scholars Program, an NSF S-STEM funded scholarship program for academically talented, financially disadvantaged undergraduates majoring in biochemistry and chemistry. The presentation will include how peer mentoring is integrated into our program, the ‘lessons learned’ and improvements made since our start in the Fall of 2018 as well as the adaptation to online environment necessitated by the pandemic. Participants will be actively engaged through a combination of group discussions and breakout activities. They will be given the opportunity to share their own experiences, exchange ideas, and support the development of one another's programs. Polling will be used to gather data and direct session discussions.

  3. Effective mentorship has been linked to improving research skills and productivity, reducing the risk of anxiety and depression, and maintaining students' academic persistence in STEM fields. Recognizing the enormous effect of mentoring on students’ academic careers and confidence, many universities and research institutions provide training programs to faculty to enhance their mentoring skills and knowledge and strengthen mentoring relationships. Many existing mentor programs for faculty adopt the evidence-based Entering Mentoring training curriculum, originally developed by a team of researchers and practitioners at the University of Wisconsin Madison for research faculty in STEM disciplines [1]. From the program evaluation perspective, measuring a training program's results and determining whether intended outcomes are achieved (i.e., the outcome evaluation) can tell whether a program achieves its goals. The results of the evaluation further inform program organizers of needed improvements. Therefore, having good knowledge of these assessment tools and their appropriate usage is essential to planning and evaluating mentoring programs. After the Entering Mentoring training curriculum was launched, various assessment tools and approaches have been utilized by different training program evaluations. This study systematically and thoroughly reviews the extant empirical studies in STEM fields (including intervention and program evaluation studies) that used the Entering Mentoring training curriculum since it was first introduced (2005 to 2023). The goal is to examine: (1) what outcome variables have been assessed to indicate the effectiveness of the Entering Mentoring training curriculum, and (2) what measurement instruments have been used to quantify the outcome variables? Finally, a further discussion is provided, particularly on selecting the appropriate tool based on research goals and resources. The findings of this study not only offer timely insight into research trends on the evaluation of the Entering Mentoring training curriculum in STEM fields but also guide professionals of mentoring training evaluation in identifying important outcome variables and selecting appropriate instrument tools.

  4. Abstract The mixed method examination of a pilot of a virtual peer mentoring program for the advancement of women faculty is described. Evidence from the semi-structured interviews and surveys demonstrated that the peer mentoring experience had a direct impact on the mentor and mentees’ s efficacy related to their career progress, promotion, and mentoring competencies. Sense of belonging in the STEM community also improved. The study results will be presented and discussed as well as the development of the program.

A research and mentoring program was developed to provide local first-generation students, students returning to school after a professional experience, and underrepresented minority students resources and relationships to guide them toward a STEM degree from a four-year university. A multi-tiered mentoring community was formed including direct mentoring from graduate students and faculty advisors, peer mentoring among undergraduate students from different colleges and universities, and high school students to increase the accessibility of research opportunities for this demographic. Local students were recruited from Northwest Arkansas Community College and Upward Bound to combine community college and high school students in a novel manner. The programs were integrated whenever possible to emphasize peer mentoring, including mentoring lunches, research meetings, presentation sessions, conference presentations, and professional development mentoring sessions. ResultsOn the post-program survey, students indicated the community formed in the program supported their STEM identity development, provided them with quality relationships, and developed skills valuable to completion of a STEM degree. This identity development was further evidenced by the students presenting their work at a conference and obtaining additional research positions after the summer program ended. The post-program scores and continued efforts of different demographics of students to pursue STEM highlight the versatility of the multi-tiered mentoring community model to serve students from different ages, backgrounds, and demographics.
