Title: Articular surface interactions distinguish dinosaurian locomotor joint poses
Abstract Our knowledge of vertebrate functional evolution depends on inferences about joint function in extinct taxa. Without rigorous criteria for evaluating joint articulation, however, such analyses risk misleading reconstructions of vertebrate animal motion. Here we propose an approach for synthesizing raycast-based measurements of 3-D articular overlap, symmetry, and congruence into a quantitative “articulation score” for any non-interpenetrating six-degree-of-freedom joint configuration. We apply our methodology to bicondylar hindlimb joints of two extant dinosaurs (guineafowl, emu) and, through comparison with in vivo kinematics, find that locomotor joint poses consistently have high articulation scores. We then exploit this relationship to constrain reconstruction of a pedal walking stride cycle for the extinct dinosaurDeinonychus antirrhopus, demonstrating the utility of our approach. As joint articulation is investigated in more living animals, the framework we establish here can be expanded to accommodate additional joints and clades, facilitating improved understanding of vertebrate animal motion and its evolution.  more » « less

  1. Abstract This paper investigates the use of multimaterial compliant joints produced through additive manufacturing in order to approximate a revolute joint. Compliant joints benefit from low friction and reduced wear, but at the cost of increased joint stiffness, reduced range of motion, and a reduced ability to resist loading. In addition, they might also provide a poor approximation of the revolute joints they intend to replace. In this paper, we experiment with three multimaterial compliant joint configurations. The first joint emphasizes accurate kinematics, the second joint aims to reduce axis-aligned stiffness, and the third joint compromises between the two. Samples were fabricated on a desktop 3D printer using PLA (polylactic acid) as the rigid material and TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) for its flexibility. Samples were measured for tensile stiffness, torsional stiffness, range of motion, and approximation of a hinge motion. Our results indicate design trade offs where joints that measure most ideal for one property will be least ideal for another. The most novel design in this paper straddles this trade off. In the end, the suitability of each joint design is determined by the loading, accuracy, and range of motion requirements posed by a given application.

Abstract BackgroundKinematic coupling between the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) and midtarsal joints is evident during gait and other movement tasks, however kinetic foot coupling during walking has not been examined. Furthermore, contributing factors to foot coupling are still unclear. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate kinematic and kinetic coupling within the foot by restricting MTP motion during overground walking. We hypothesized that when the MTP joint was prevented from fully extending, the midtarsal joint would achieve less peak motion and generate less positive work compared to walking with normal MTP motion. MethodsTwenty‐six individuals participated in this randomized cross‐over study. Using motion capture to track motion, participants walked at 1.3 m/s while wearing a brace that restricted MTP motion in a neutral (BR_NT) or extended (BR_EX) position. Additionally, participants walked while wearing the brace in a freely moveable setting (BR_UN) and with no brace (CON). A pressure/shear sensing device was used to capture forces under each foot segment. During stance, peak joint motion and work were calculated for the MTP and midtarsal joints using inverse dynamics. A series of ANOVAs and Holm post hoc tests were performed for all metrics (alpha = 0.05). ResultsThe brace successfully decreased peak MTP motion by 19% compared to BR_UN and CON. This was coupled with 9.8% less midtarsal motion. Kinetically, the work absorbed by the MTP joint (26–51%) and generated by the midtarsal joint (30–38%) were both less in BR_EX and BR_NT compared to BR_UN. ConclusionImplications and sources of coupling between the MTP and midtarsal joints are discussed within the context of center of pressure shifts and changes to segmental foot forces. Our results suggest that interventions aimed at modulating MTP negative work (such as footwear or assistive device design) should not ignore the midtarsal joint.

In evolutionary biomechanics, musculoskeletal computer models of extant and extinct taxa are often used to estimate joint range of motion (ROM) and muscle moment arms (MMAs), two parameters which form the basis of functional inferences. However, relatively few experimental studies have been performed to validate model outputs. Previously, we built a model of the short-beaked echidna ( Tachyglossus aculeatus ) forelimb using a traditional modelling workflow, and in this study we evaluate its behaviour and outputs using experimental data. The echidna is an unusual animal representing an edge-case for model validation: it uses a unique form of sprawling locomotion, and possesses a suite of derived anatomical features, in addition to other features reminiscent of extinct early relatives of mammals. Here we use diffusible iodine-based contrast-enhanced computed tomography (diceCT) alongside digital and traditional dissection to evaluate muscle attachments, modelled muscle paths, and the effects of model alterations on the MMA outputs. We use X-ray Reconstruction of Moving Morphology (XROMM) to compare ex vivo joint ROM to model estimates based on osteological limits predicted via single-axis rotation, and to calculate experimental MMAs from implanted muscles using a novel geometric method. We also add additional levels of model detail, in the form of muscle architecture, to evaluate how muscle torque might alter the inferences made from MMAs alone, as is typical in evolutionary studies. Our study identifies several key findings that can be applied to future models. 1) A light-touch approach to model building can generate reasonably accurate muscle paths, and small alterations in attachment site seem to have minimal effects on model output. 2) Simultaneous movement through multiple degrees of freedom, including rotations and translation at joints, are necessary to ensure full joint ROM is captured; however, single-axis ROM can provide a reasonable approximation of mobility depending on the modelling objectives. 3) Our geometric method of calculating MMAs is consistent with model-predicted MMAs calculated via partial velocity, and is a potentially useful tool for others to create and validate musculoskeletal models. 4) Inclusion of muscle architecture data can change some functional inferences, but in many cases reinforced conclusions based on MMA alone.

Abstract Posttraumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) is typically initiated by momentary supraphysiologic shear and compressive forces delivered to articular cartilage during acute joint injury and develops through subsequent degradation of cartilage matrix components and tissue remodeling. PTOA affects 12% of the population who experience osteoarthritis and is attributed to over $3 billion dollars annually in healthcare costs. It is currently unknown whether articulation of the joint post‐injury helps tissue healing or exacerbates cellular dysfunction and eventual death. We hypothesize that post‐injury cartilage articulation will lead to increased cartilage damage. Our objective was to test this hypothesis by mimicking the mechanical environment of the joint during and post‐injury and determining if subsequent joint articulation exacerbates damage produced by initial injury. We use a model of PTOA that combines impact injury and repetitive sliding with confocal microscopy to quantify and track chondrocyte viability, apoptosis, and mitochondrial depolarization in a depth‐dependent manner. Cartilage explants were harvested from neonatal bovine knee joints and subjected to either rapid impact injury (17.34 ± 0.99 MPa, 21.6 ± 2.45 GPa/s), sliding (60 min at 1 mm/s, under 15% axial compression), or rapid impact injury followed by sliding. Explants were then bisected and fluorescently stained for cell viability, caspase activity (apoptosis), and mitochondria polarization. Results show that compared to either impact or sliding alone, explants that were both impacted and slid experienced higher magnitudes of damage spanning greater tissue depths.

  5. Sounds produced by the articulation of joints have been shown to contain information characteristic of underlying joint health, morphology, and loading. In this work, we explore the use of a novel form factor for non-invasively acquiring acoustic/vibrational signals from the knee joint: an instrumented glove with a fingertip-mounted accelerometer. We validated the glove-based approach by comparing it to conventional mounting techniques (tape and foam microphone pads) in an experimental framework previously shown to reliably alter healthy knee joint sounds (vertical leg press). Measurements from healthy subjects (N = 11) in this proof-of-concept study demonstrated a highly consistent, monotonic, and significant (p < 0.01) increase in low-frequency signal root-mean-squared (RMS) amplitude—a straightforward metric relating to joint grinding loudness—with increasing vertical load across all three techniques. This finding suggests that a glove-based approach is a suitable alternative for collecting joint sounds that eliminates the need for consumables like tape and the interface noise associated with them.
