The NSF S-STEM-funded program titled Fostering Leaders in Technology Entrepreneurship (FLiTE) hosted by the School of Engineering+Technology at Western Carolina University has now completed its second year of operation. The program aims to create graduates who bring impactful contributions to industry employers or create new businesses with their own original technology innovations. FLiTE has continued its mission to cultivate entrepreneurial and growth oriented thinking among financially needy engineering and technology students. With the first and second-year classes aboard, the program currently serves eighteen students. Program activities for the 2023 calendar year included the induction of a newly recruited class, connection with campus resources and veteran entrepreneurs, and scholar participation in a formal pitch development course. Pre- and post-year surveys were completed by the scholars to characterize personal perceptions of their initial and developing aptitudes toward the entrepreneurial mindset. This paper describes the cohort teaming sessions, invited speakers, informal and formal pitch presentations, and survey results from the fall 2022 and spring 2023 semesters. Summary results show improvement in scholar perceptions of entrepreneurial dimensions entrepreneurial targeted by program interventions. Findings from these activities may inform the curriculum at Western Carolina University and the content of similar entrepreneurship programs.

Multiscale genome organization symposium — annual biophysical society meeting 2023
The MGO symposium was held on February 18th with seven featured speakers from all over the globe. Drs. Bin Zhang and Alexey Onufriev chaired the session with Drs. Yamini Dalal and Anna Panchenko as the 2022 MGO co-chairs. The session and goals of the MGO subgroup were introduced by Dr. Panchenko, followed by talks from the invited speakers. The presentations showcased research at the forefront of the field and elicited high audience engagement. Here, we summarize the presentations of these invited speakers.

On August 4-5, 2022, the Thomas J. O’Keefe Institute for Sustainable Supply of Strategic Minerals at Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) hosted the 2nd annual national workshop on ‘Resilient Supply of Critical Minerals’ funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The workshop was convened via Zoom and attracted 346 registrants, including 171 registrants from academia (62 students), 88 registrants from government agencies, and 87 registrants from the private sector. The workshop was free to attend for everyone who registered. On day 1 of the workshop, 152 unique viewers logged into the sessions. Day 2 had 111 unique viewers. Four topical sessions were covered: A. The Critical Mineral Potential of the USA: Evaluation of existing, and exploration for new resources (Day 1). Keynote speaker: Jeffrey Mauk, United States Geological Survey. B. Mineral Processing and Recycling: Maximizing critical mineral recovery from existing production streams (Day 1). Keynote speaker: Karin Olson Hoal, Cornell University. C. Critical Mineral Policies: Toward effective and responsible governance (Day 2). Keynote speaker: Michelle Michot Foss, Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy. D. Resource Sustainability: Ethical and environmentally sustainable supply of critical minerals (Day 2). Keynote speaker: Debra Struhsacker, Professional Geologist, Environmental Permitting & Government Relations Consultant. Each topical session was composed of one keynote lecture and three invited presentations. The sessions concluded with a Q/A discussion with all presenters. Recordings of selected presentations are available from the workshop website: https://criticalminerals.mst.edu/2022-presentation-videos/. The third annual workshop on ‘Resilient Supply of Critical ‘Minerals’ will be held in the summer of 2023 on the Missouri S&T campus, Rolla, Missouri, USA. The dates will be announced in January 2023.more » « less

Daehn, G; Cao, J; Kinsey, B; Tekkaya, E; Vivek, A; Yoshida, Y (Ed.)The technology of plasticity primarily refers to processing techniques based on forming technology and the forming process of various metals generally. Metal forming is a vital component to the production of goods worldwide, however, the underlying theme of ICTP2021 were sustained manufacturing, as it relates to metal forming, with interests paid to the impact on industrial applications and fundamental science underpinnings of the field. This conference covered a range of topical areas in metal forming research, representing the most critical, rapidly growing, innovative subject areas (including, but not limited to, Big Data in metal forming, agile metal forming, and the value of, and limits to, simulation), and will bring together a wide array of researchers in this arena, including scientists, engineers, managers, government program officers, professors, and students from across industry, academia, and government. Sessions ran in parallel with as many as five sessions running congruently. The program also included multiple plenary talks, invited speakers, and a robust poster session. This variety of programming offerings provided a breadth of information through in-depth discussions and interaction opportunities. This meeting was open to all interested individuals, with a mixture of attendees from academic research, industry and educational professions, representing both senior and junior investigators, postdoctoral trainees and students. The nine overarching topical areas explored during this international conference included Metal Forming Processes & Equipment; Joining by Forming and Deformation; Microstructure and Damage Development & Characterization; Big Data and Metal Forming; High Speed and Impulse Forming; Agile Metal Forming; Microstructure development by Forming; Technologies to Speed Innovation; and Value of, and Limits to, Simulation.more » « less

People who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing (DHH) benefit from text captioning to understand audio, yet captions alone are often insufficient for the complex environment of a panel presentation, with rapid and unpredictable turn-taking among multiple speakers. It is challenging and tiring for DHH individuals to view captioned panel presentations, leading to feelings of misunderstanding and exclusion. In this work, we investigate the potential of Mixed Reality (MR) head-mounted displays for providing captioning with visual cues to indicate which person on the panel is speaking. For consistency in our experimental study, we simulate a panel presentation in virtual reality (VR) with various types of MR visual cues; in a study with 18 DHH participants, visual cues made it easier to identify speakers.more » « less
