Title: Developmental stage‐dependent effects of perceived predation risk on nestling tree swallows ( Tachycineta bicolor )
Abstract The risk of predation directly affects the physiology, behavior, and fitness of wild birds. Strong social connections with conspecifics could help individuals recover from a stressful experience such as a predation event; however, competitive interactions also have the potential to exacerbate stress. Few studies have investigated the interaction between environmental stressors and the social landscape in wild bird populations. In 2 years of field studies, we experimentally simulated predation attempts on breeding female tree swallows (Tachicyneta bicolor). At the same time, we manipulated female breast plumage color, a key social signal. Simulated predation events on tree swallows early in the nestling period reduced young nestlings' mass by approximately 20% and shortened telomere lengths. Ultimately, only 31% of nestlings in the predation group fledged compared with 70% of control nestlings. However, the effects of experimental manipulations were timing dependent: the following year when we swapped the order of the experimental manipulations and simulated predation during incubation, there were no significant effects of predation on nestling condition or fledging success. Contrary to our expectations, manipulation of the social environment did not affect the response of tree swallows to simulated predation. However, manipulating female plumage during the nestling period did reduce nestling skeletal size and mass, although the effects depended on original plumage brightness. Our data demonstrate that transient stressors on female birds can have carry‐over effects on their nestlings if they occur during critical periods in the breeding season.  more » « less

  1. Abstract Animals that feed socially can sometimes better locate prey, often by transferring information about food that is patchy, dense, and temporally and spatially unpredictable. Information transfer is a potential benefit of living in breeding colonies where unsuccessful foragers can more readily locate successful ones and thereby improve feeding efficiency. Most studies on social foraging have been short term, and how long‐term environmental change affects both foraging strategies and the associated benefits of coloniality is generally unknown. In the colonial Cliff Swallow (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota), we examined how social foraging, information transfer, and feeding ecology changed over a 40‐year period in western Nebraska. Relative to the 1980s, Cliff Swallows in 2016–2022 were more likely to forage solitarily or in smaller groups, spent less time foraging, were more successful as solitaries, fed in more variable locations, and engaged less in information transfer at the colony site. The total mass of insects brought back to nestlings per parental visit declined over the study. The diversity of insect families captured increased over time, and some insect taxa dropped out of the diet, although the three most common insect families remained the same over the decades. Nestling Cliff Swallow body mass at 10 days of age and the number of nestlings surviving per nest declined more sharply with colony size in 2015–2022 than in 1984–1991 at sites where the confounding effects of ectoparasites were removed. Adult body mass during the provisioning of nestlings was lower in more recent years, but the change did not vary with colony size. The reason(s) for the reduction in social foraging and information transfer over time is unclear, but the consequence is that colonial nesting may no longer offer the same fitness advantages for Cliff Swallows as in the 1980s. The results illustrate the flexibility of foraging behavior and dynamic shifts in the potential selective pressures for group living.

  2. When evaluating avian reproduction, life history theory examines the trade‐offs between parental effort, the number and size of offspring, and the rate of nestling development. The growth rates and body sizes of developing birds vary geographically and can diverge with both latitude and migratory strategy. In terms of offspring size, growth rate can deviate in nestlings of the same or similar species due to the correlated influences of weather events, predation pressure, food availability, number of nestmates and parental provisioning. Furthermore, a longer photoperiod for species nesting at higher latitudes increases the duration over which a nestling can be fed each day, and increased nestling provisioning has been positively correlated with growth rate. Whether the amount of time a bird is fed during development drives this variation in growth rate and morphology is unknown. By removing supplemental environmental stressors (e.g. weather, predation) and standardizing feeding rate and environment, we explored the influence of daily duration of nestling provisioning on dark‐eyed junco Junco hyemalis nestlings. We hand‐reared 65 chicks of a sedentary junco subspecies J. h. carolinensis under both their natural photoperiod and the longer photoperiod of a closely related migratory subspecies J. h. hyemalis and compared growth rate, mass, morphology and the amount of food consumed. Average growth rate, fasted mass, wing length and total daily food consumption were all greater in birds hand‐reared under the longer, more northern photoperiod treatment. These findings suggest that increased daily photoperiod at higher latitudes may allow for greater total food provisioning and thus may play a role in the ability of parents in compressed breeding seasons to produce high quality offspring. This points to a trade‐off between provisioning effort and nestling growth rate in lower latitude (shorter photoperiod) populations and points to an important role of developmental plasticity on growth rate and morphology.

  3. Abstract Extra-pair mating is common in avian species and can modulate the strength of sexual selection. Mate searching behavior of female birds may be an important predictor of mating opportunities and extra-pair mating, yet important knowledge is lacking as we have little data on fine-scale movement of females during the peak fertilization period. Accordingly, much is still unknown about whether and how female phenotypes contribute to extra-pair mating. Here, we examined how female space use and female plumage color are associated with extra-pair mating outcomes in wild barn swallows (Hirundo rustica erythrogaster). We tracked 10 females breeding in Colorado, USA with GPS backpack tags for two hours each morning during their fertile period following an experimental nest failure. We then used low-coverage whole-genome sequencing to determine offspring paternity and to quantify extra-pair mating in the removed clutch and the replacement clutch. Plumage and movement did not correlate with changes in paternity between successive clutches, but movement did correlate with paternity in the replacement clutch. Females that spent more time away from the nest had a higher proportion and number of extra-pair offspring in the clutch laid immediately after the tracking period. These results suggest that differences in female space use contribute to differences in extra-pair fertilizations. In contrast to the historic emphasis on male traits, our study highlights female movement behavior as an important variable associated with mating outcomes in natural populations.

    Abstract While female mate choice is well established, mutual choice may play a larger role in mate selection than currently recognized. Assortative mating is a common form of nonrandom mating in animals that can result from mutual choice. However, few studies address assortative patterns beyond the social pair, potentially overlooking assortativity in the mating pair and in the social environment that shapes reproductive decisions. We asked whether North American barn swallows (Hirundo rustica erythrogaster) breeding in a large colony form pairs, mate (through both within-pair and extra-pair fertilizations), and interact assortatively by ventral plumage color, wing length, and age. Social interactions were tracked using proximity loggers, which recorded close contact between tagged individuals when birds were mating and laying eggs. Barn swallows paired and mated assortatively by their ventral plumage color; however, the assortative patterns in mating pairs were not as strong as they were in social pairs. Barn swallows also interacted assortatively, associating more often with individuals of both sexes who had similar phenotypes relative to the other birds in the colony. Finally, older males and females with darker ventral plumage achieved the highest reproductive success. Investigation of assortative behavior beyond the level of the social pair provides a more complete understanding of mate choice and suggests a mechanism that may maintain the large variation in ventral plumage color in North American barn swallows.

  5. Abstract Many animals breed colonially, often in dense clusters, representing a complex social environment with cognitive demands that could ultimately impact individual fitness. However, the effects of social breeding on the evolution of cognitive processes remain largely unknown. We tested the hypothesis that facultative colonial breeding influences attention and decision-making. Barn swallows (Hirundo rustica) breed in solitary pairs or in a range of colony sizes, up to dozens of pairs. We tested for selective attention to social information with playbacks of conspecific alarm calls and for decision-making with simulated predator intrusions, across a range of colony sizes from 1 to 33 pairs. We also evaluated the adaptive value of both processes by measuring seasonal reproductive success. Swallows breeding in larger colonies were more selective in their attention to social information. Birds breeding in larger colonies were also less risk averse, deciding to return more quickly to their nests after a predator approach paradigm. Finally, birds that showed higher selective attention hatched more eggs and birds that returned to their nests more quickly after a predator intrusion had more nestlings. Although we cannot fully attribute these fitness outcomes to the cognitive measures considered in this study, our results suggest that social breeding plays a role in adaptively shaping both the acquisition of social information and decision-making.
