Title: On the Mass Transfer in the 3D Pitaevskii Model
Abstract We examine a micro-scale model of superfluidity derived by Pitaevskii (Sov. Phys. JETP 8:282-287, 1959) which describes the interacting dynamics between superfluid He-4 and its normal fluid phase. This system consists of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation and the incompressible, inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations, coupled to each other via a bidirectional nonlinear relaxation mechanism. The coupling permits mass/momentum/energy transfer between the phases, and accounts for the conversion of superfluid into normal fluid. We prove the existence of global weak solutions in$${\mathbb {T}}^3$$ T 3 for a power-type nonlinearity, beginning from small initial data. The main challenge is to control the inter-phase mass transfer in order to ensure the strict positivity of the normal fluid density, while obtaining time-independent a priori estimates.  more » « less

  1. Abstract We consider thed-dimensional MagnetoHydroDynamics (MHD) system defined on a sufficiently smooth bounded domain,$$d = 2,3$$ d = 2 , 3 with homogeneous boundary conditions, and subject to external sources assumed to cause instability. The initial conditions for both fluid and magnetic equations are taken of low regularity. We then seek to uniformly stabilize such MHD system in the vicinity of an unstable equilibrium pair, in the critical setting of correspondingly low regularity spaces, by means of explicitly constructed, static, feedback controls, which are localized on an arbitrarily small interior subdomain. In additional, they will be minimal in number. The resulting space of well-posedness and stabilization is a suitable product space$$\displaystyle \widetilde{\textbf{B}}^{2- ^{2}\!/_{p}}_{q,p}(\Omega )\times \widetilde{\textbf{B}}^{2- ^{2}\!/_{p}}_{q,p}(\Omega ), \, 1< p < \frac{2q}{2q-1}, \, q > d,$$ B ~ q , p 2 - 2 / p ( Ω ) × B ~ q , p 2 - 2 / p ( Ω ) , 1 < p < 2 q 2 q - 1 , q > d , of tight Besov spaces for the fluid velocity component and the magnetic field component (each “close” to$$\textbf{L}^3(\Omega )$$ L 3 ( Ω ) for$$d = 3$$ d = 3 ). Showing maximal$$L^p$$ L p -regularity up to$$T = \infty $$ T = for the feedback stabilized linear system is critical for the analysis of well-posedness and stabilization of the feedback nonlinear problem.

  2. Abstract We investigate a micro-scale model of superfluidity derived by Pitaevskii (1959Sov. Phys. JETP8282–7) to describe the interacting dynamics between the superfluid and normal fluid phases of Helium-4. The model involves the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) and the Navier–Stokes equations, coupled to each other via a bidirectional nonlinear relaxation mechanism. Depending on the nature of the nonlinearity in the NLS, we prove global/almost global existence of solutions to this system in T 2 —strong in wavefunction and velocity, and weak in density.

  3. Abstract A model based on a$$U(1)_{T^3_R}$$ U ( 1 ) T R 3 extension of the Standard Model can address the mass hierarchy between generations of fermions, explain thermal dark matter abundance, and the muon$$g - 2$$ g - 2 ,$$R_{(D)}$$ R ( D ) , and$$R_{(D^*)}$$ R ( D ) anomalies. The model contains a light scalar boson$$\phi '$$ ϕ and a heavy vector-like quark$$\chi _\textrm{u}$$ χ u that can be probed at CERN’s large hadron collider (LHC). We perform a phenomenology study on the production of$$\phi '$$ ϕ and$${\chi }_u$$ χ u particles from proton–proton$$(\textrm{pp})$$ ( pp ) collisions at the LHC at$$\sqrt{s}=13.6$$ s = 13.6 TeV, primarily through$$g{-g}$$ g - g and$$t{-\chi _\textrm{u}}$$ t - χ u fusion. We work under a simplified model approach and directly take the$$\chi _\textrm{u}$$ χ u and$$\phi '$$ ϕ masses as free parameters. We perform a phenomenological analysis considering$$\chi _\textrm{u}$$ χ u final states to b-quarks, muons, and neutrinos, and$$\phi '$$ ϕ decays to$$\mu ^+\mu ^-$$ μ + μ - . A machine learning algorithm is used to maximize the signal sensitivity, considering an integrated luminosity of 3000$$\text {fb}^{-1}$$ fb - 1 . The proposed methodology can be a key mode for discovery over a large mass range, including low masses, traditionally considered difficult due to experimental constraints.

  4. Abstract The symmetry-breaking first-order phase transition between superfluid phases$$^3$$ 3 He-A and$$^3$$ 3 He-B can be triggered extrinsically by ionising radiation or heterogeneous nucleation arising from the details of the sample cell construction. However, the role of potential homogeneous intrinsic nucleation mechanisms remains elusive. Discovering and resolving the intrinsic processes may have cosmological consequences, since an analogous first-order phase transition, and the production of gravitational waves, has been predicted for the very early stages of the expanding Universe in many extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics. Here we introduce a new approach for probing the phase transition in superfluid$$^3$$ 3 He. The setup consists of a novel stepped-height nanofluidic sample container with close to atomically smooth walls. The$$^3$$ 3 He is confined in five tiny nanofabricated volumes and assayed non-invasively by NMR. Tuning of the state of$$^3$$ 3 He by confinement is used to isolate each of these five volumes so that the phase transitions in them can occur independently and free from any obvious sources of heterogeneous nucleation. The small volumes also ensure that the transitions triggered by ionising radiation are strongly suppressed. Here we present the preliminary measurements using this setup, showing both strong supercooling of$$^3$$ 3 He-A and superheating of$$^3$$ 3 He-B, with stochastic processes dominating the phase transitions between the two. The objective is to study the nucleation as a function of temperature and pressure over the full phase diagram, to both better test the proposed extrinsic mechanisms and seek potential parallel intrinsic mechanisms.

  5. It has recently been understood that the complete global symmetry of finite group topological gauge theories contains the structure of a higher-group. Here we study the higher-group structure in (3+1)D\mathbb{Z}_2 2 gauge theory with an emergent fermion, and point out that pumping chiralp+ip p + i p topological states gives rise to a\mathbb{Z}_{8} 8 0-form symmetry with mixed gravitational anomaly. This ordinary symmetry mixes with the other higher symmetries to form a 3-group structure, which we examine in detail. We then show that in the context of stabilizer quantum codes, one can obtain logical CCZ and CS gates by placing the code on a discretization ofT^3 T 3 (3-torus) andT^2 \rtimes_{C_2} S^1 T 2 C 2 S 1 (2-torus bundle over the circle) respectively, and pumpingp+ip p + i p states. Our considerations also imply the possibility of a logicalT T gate by placing the code on\mathbb{RP}^3 3 and pumping ap+ip p + i p topological state.
