Title: Light-flavor particle production in high-multiplicity pp collisions at $$ \sqrt{\textrm{s}} $$ = 13 TeV as a function of transverse spherocity
Abstract Results on the transverse spherocity dependence of light-flavor particle production (π, K, p,ϕ, K*0,$$ {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $$ KS0 , Λ, Ξ) at midrapidity in high-multiplicity pp collisions at$$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 13 TeV were obtained with the ALICE apparatus. The transverse spherocity estimator$$ \left({S}_{\textrm{O}}^{p_{\textrm{T}}=1}\right) $$ SO pT=1 categorizes events by their azimuthal topology. Utilizing narrow selections on$$ {S}_{\textrm{O}}^{p_{\textrm{T}}=1} $$ SO pT=1 , it is possible to contrast particle production in collisions dominated by many soft initial interactions with that observed in collisions dominated by one or more hard scatterings. Results are reported for two multiplicity estimators covering different pseudorapidity regions. The$$ {S}_{\textrm{O}}^{p_{\textrm{T}}=1} $$ SO pT=1 estimator is found to effectively constrain the hardness of the events when the midrapidity (|η| < 0.8) estimator is used. The production rates of strange particles are found to be slightly higher for soft isotropic topologies, and severely suppressed in hard jet-like topologies. These effects are more pronounced for hadrons with larger mass and strangeness content, and observed when the topological selection is done within a narrow multiplicity interval. This demonstrates that an important aspect of the universal scaling of strangeness enhancement with final-state multiplicity is that high-multiplicity collisions are dominated by soft, isotropic processes. On the contrary, strangeness production in events with jet-like processes is significantly reduced. The results presented in this article are compared with several QCD-inspired Monte Carlo event generators. Models that incorporate a two-component phenomenology, either through mechanisms accounting for string density, or thermal production, are able to describe the observed strangeness enhancement as a function of$$ {S}_{\textrm{O}}^{p_{\textrm{T}}=1} $$ SO pT=1 more » « less

  1. Abstract The transverse momentum ($$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ pT ) differential production cross section of the promptly produced charm-strange baryon$$\mathrm {\Xi _{c}^{0}}$$ Ξc0 (and its charge conjugate$$\overline{\mathrm {\Xi _{c}^{0}}}$$ Ξc0 ¯ ) is measured at midrapidity via its hadronic decay into$$\mathrm{\pi ^{+}}\Xi ^{-}$$ π+Ξ- in p–Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon–nucleon collision$$\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}~=~5.02$$ sNN =5.02  TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The$$\mathrm {\Xi _{c}^{0}}$$ Ξc0 nuclear modification factor ($$R_{\textrm{pPb}}$$ RpPb ), calculated from the cross sections in pp and p–Pb collisions, is presented and compared with the$$R_{\textrm{pPb}}$$ RpPb of$$\mathrm {\Lambda _{c}^{+}}$$ Λc+ baryons. The ratios between the$$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ pT -differential production cross section of$$\mathrm {\Xi _{c}^{0}}$$ Ξc0 baryons and those of$$\mathrm {D^0}$$ D0 mesons and$$\mathrm {\Lambda _{c}^{+}}$$ Λc+ baryons are also reported and compared with results at forward and backward rapidity from the LHCb Collaboration. The measurements of the production cross section of prompt$$\Xi ^0_\textrm{c}$$ Ξc0 baryons are compared with a model based on perturbative QCD calculations of charm-quark production cross sections, which includes only cold nuclear matter effects in p–Pb collisions, and underestimates the measurement by a factor of about 50. This discrepancy is reduced when the data is compared with a model that includes string formation beyond leading-colour approximation or in which hadronisation is implemented via quark coalescence. The$$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ pT -integrated cross section of prompt$$\Xi ^0_\textrm{c}$$ Ξc0 -baryon production at midrapidity extrapolated down to$$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ pT = 0 is also reported. These measurements offer insights and constraints for theoretical calculations of the hadronisation process. Additionally, they provide inputs for the calculation of the charm production cross section in p–Pb collisions at midrapidity.

  2. Abstract Event-by-event fluctuations of the event-wise mean transverse momentum,$$\langle p_{\textrm{T}}\rangle $$ pT , of charged particles produced in proton–proton (pp) collisions at$$\sqrt{s}$$ s = 5.02 TeV, Xe–Xe collisions at$$\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}$$ sNN = 5.44 TeV, and Pb–Pb collisions at$$\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}$$ sNN = 5.02 TeV are studied using the ALICE detector based on the integral correlator$$\langle \!\langle \Delta p_\textrm{T}\Delta p_\textrm{T}\rangle \!\rangle $$ ΔpTΔpT . The correlator strength is found to decrease monotonically with increasing produced charged-particle multiplicity measured at midrapidity in all three systems. In Xe–Xe and Pb–Pb collisions, the multiplicity dependence of the correlator deviates significantly from a simple power-law scaling as well as from the predictions of the HIJING and AMPT models. The observed deviation from power-law scaling is expected from transverse radial flow in semicentral to central Xe–Xe and Pb–Pb collisions. In pp collisions, the correlation strength is also studied by classifying the events based on the transverse spherocity,$$S_0$$ S0 , of the particle production at midrapidity, used as a proxy for the presence of a pronounced back-to-back jet topology. Low-spherocity (jetty) events feature a larger correlation strength than those with high spherocity (isotropic). The strength and multiplicity dependence of jetty and isotropic events are well reproduced by calculations with the PYTHIA 8 and EPOS LHC models.

  3. Abstract The azimuthal-correlation distributions between electrons from the decays of heavy-flavor hadrons and associated charged particles in Pb–Pb collisions at$$\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} = 5.02$$ sNN =5.02 TeV are reported for the 0–10% and 30–50% centrality classes. This measurement provides access to the jet-like correlation observables in the heavy-flavor sector in Pb–Pb collisions. The analysis is performed for trigger electrons from heavy-flavor hadron decays with transverse momentum$$4< p_\textrm{T}^\textrm{e} < 16~\textrm{GeV}/c$$ 4<pTe<16GeV/c , considering associated particles within the transverse-momentum range$$1< p_\textrm{T}^\textrm{assoc} < 7$$ 1<pTassoc<7 $$\textrm{GeV}/c$$ GeV/c , and a pseudorapidity difference of$$|\Delta \eta |<1$$ |Δη|<1 between the trigger electron and associated particles. The per-trigger nuclear modification factor ($$I_\textrm{AA}$$ IAA ) is calculated to compare the near- and away-side peak yields to those in pp collisions at$$\sqrt{s} = 5.02$$ s=5.02 TeV. In 0–10% central collisions, the$$I_\textrm{AA}$$ IAA indicates a hint of enhancement of associated-particle yields with$$p_\textrm{T}<3$$ pT<3 GeV/con the near side, and a suppression of yields with$$p_\textrm{T}>4$$ pT>4 GeV/con the away side. The$$I_\textrm{AA}$$ IAA for electron triggers from heavy-flavor hadron decays is compared with that for light-flavor and strange-particle triggers to investigate the dependence on different fragmentation processes and parton-medium dynamics, and is found to be the same within uncertainties.

  4. Abstract This paper presents the measurement of the isolated prompt photon inclusive production cross section in pp and p–Pb collisions by the ALICE Collaboration at the LHC. The measurement is performed in p–Pb collisions at centre-of-mass energies per nucleon pair of$$\sqrt{s_{\text {NN}}}={5.02}\,\textrm{TeV}$$ sNN =5.02TeV and 8.16 TeV, as well as in pp collisions at$$\sqrt{s}={5.02}\,\textrm{TeV}$$ s=5.02TeV and 8 TeV. The cross section is obtained at midrapidity$$(|y|<0.7)$$ (|y|<0.7) using a charged-track based isolation momentum$$p_\textrm{T}^{\text {iso,~ch}}<{1.5}\,\textrm{GeV}/c$$ pTiso, ch <1.5GeV/c in a cone with radius$$R=0.4$$ R=0.4 . The data for both collision systems are well reproduced by perturbative QCD (pQCD) calculations at next-to-leading order (NLO) using recent parton distribution functions for free (PDF) and bound (nPDF) nucleons. Furthermore, the nuclear modification factor$$R_{\text {pA}}$$ RpA for both collision energies is consistent with unity for$$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ pT $$>{20}\,\textrm{GeV}/c$$ >20GeV/c . However, deviations from unity ($$R_\textrm{pA}<1$$ RpA<1 ) of up to 20% are observed for$$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ pT $$<{20}\,\textrm{GeV}/c$$ <20GeV/c with limited significance, indicating the possible presence of nuclear effects in the initial state of the collision. The suppression increases with decreasing$$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ pT with a significance of$$2.3\upsigma $$ 2.3σ for a non-zero slope and yields$$R_{\textrm{pA}}<1$$ RpA<1 with a significance of$$1.8\upsigma $$ 1.8σ at$$\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}={8.16}\,\textrm{TeV}$$ sNN =8.16TeV for$$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ pT $$<{20}\,\textrm{GeV}/c$$ <20GeV/c . In addition, a significance of$$1.1\upsigma $$ 1.1σ is observed for$$R_{\textrm{pA}}<1$$ RpA<1 at the lower collision energy$$\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}={5.02}\,\textrm{TeV}$$ sNN =5.02TeV for$$p_{\textrm{T}} < {14}\,\textrm{GeV}/c$$ pT<14GeV/c . The magnitude and shape of the suppression are consistent with pQCD predictions at NLO using nPDFs that incorporate nuclear shadowing effects in the Pb nucleus.

  5. Abstract The first measurement of the multiplicity dependence of intra-jet properties of leading charged-particle jets in proton–proton (pp) collisions is reported. The mean charged-particle multiplicity and jet fragmentation distributions are measured in minimum-bias and high-multiplicity pp collisions at center-of-mass energy$$\sqrt{s}$$ s = 13 TeV using the ALICE detector. Jets are reconstructed from charged particles produced in the midrapidity region ($$|\eta | < 0.9$$ |η|<0.9 ) using the sequential recombination anti-$$k_{\textrm{T}}$$ kT algorithm with jet resolution parametersR= 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4 for the transverse momentum ($$p_\textrm{T}$$ pT ) interval 5–110 GeV/c. The high-multiplicity events are selected by the forward V0 scintillator detectors. The mean charged-particle multiplicity inside the leading jet cone rises monotonically with increasing jet$$p_\textrm{T}$$ pT in qualitative agreement with previous measurements at lower energies. The distributions of jet fragmentation function variables$$z^{\textrm{ch}}$$ zch and$$\xi ^{\textrm{ch}}$$ ξch are measured for different jet-$$p_\textrm{T}$$ pT intervals. Jet-$$p_\textrm{T}$$ pT independent fragmentation of leading jets is observed for wider jets except at high- and low-$$z^{\textrm{ch}}$$ zch values. The observed “hump-backed plateau” structure in the$$\xi ^{\textrm{ch}}$$ ξch distribution indicates suppression of low-$$p_\textrm{T}$$ pT particles. In high-multiplicity events, an enhancement of the fragmentation probability of low-$$z^{\textrm{ch}}$$ zch particles accompanied by a suppression of high-$$z^{\textrm{ch}}$$ zch particles is observed compared to minimum-bias events. This behavior becomes more prominent for low-$$p_\textrm{T}$$ pT jets with larger jet radius. The results are compared with predictions of QCD-inspired event generators, PYTHIA 8 with Monash 2013 tune and EPOS LHC. It is found that PYTHIA 8 qualitatively reproduces the jet modification in high-multiplicity events except at high jet$$p_\textrm{T}$$ pT . These measurements provide important constraints to models of jet fragmentation.
