Abstract A search is reported for charge-parity$$CP$$ violation in$${{{\textrm{D}}}^{{0}}} \rightarrow {{\textrm{K}} _{\text {S}}^{{0}}} {{\textrm{K}} _{\text {S}}^{{0}}} $$ decays, using data collected in proton–proton collisions at$$\sqrt{s} = 13\,\text {Te}\hspace{-.08em}\text {V} $$ recorded by the CMS experiment in 2018. The analysis uses a dedicated data set that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 41.6$$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$$ , which consists of about 10 billion events containing a pair of b hadrons, nearly all of which decay to charm hadrons. The flavor of the neutral D meson is determined by the pion charge in the reconstructed decays$${{{\textrm{D}}}^{{*+}}} \rightarrow {{{\textrm{D}}}^{{0}}} {{{\mathrm{\uppi }}}^{{+}}} $$ and$${{{\textrm{D}}}^{{*-}}} \rightarrow {\overline{{\textrm{D}}}^{{0}}} {{{\mathrm{\uppi }}}^{{-}}} $$ . The$$CP$$ asymmetry in$${{{\textrm{D}}}^{{0}}} \rightarrow {{\textrm{K}} _{\text {S}}^{{0}}} {{\textrm{K}} _{\text {S}}^{{0}}} $$ is measured to be$$A_{CP} ({{\textrm{K}} _{\text {S}}^{{0}}} {{\textrm{K}} _{\text {S}}^{{0}}} ) = (6.2 \pm 3.0 \pm 0.2 \pm 0.8)\%$$ , where the three uncertainties represent the statistical uncertainty, the systematic uncertainty, and the uncertainty in the measurement of the$$CP$$ asymmetry in the$${{{\textrm{D}}}^{{0}}} \rightarrow {{\textrm{K}} _{\text {S}}^{{0}}} {{{\mathrm{\uppi }}}^{{+}}} {{{\mathrm{\uppi }}}^{{-}}} $$ decay. This is the first$$CP$$ asymmetry measurement by CMS in the charm sector as well as the first to utilize a fully hadronic final state.

Measurement of non-prompt $${{\textrm{D}}^{0}}$$-meson elliptic flow in Pb–Pb collisions at $$\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} = 5.02$$ TeV
Abstract The elliptic flow$$(v_2)$$ of$${\textrm{D}}^{0}$$ mesons from beauty-hadron decays (non-prompt$${\textrm{D}}^{0})$$ was measured in midcentral (30–50%) Pb–Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair$$\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} = 5.02$$ TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The$${\textrm{D}}^{0}$$ mesons were reconstructed at midrapidity$$(|y|<0.8)$$ from their hadronic decay$$\mathrm {D^0 \rightarrow K^-\uppi ^+}$$ , in the transverse momentum interval$$2< p_{\textrm{T}} < 12$$ GeV/c. The result indicates a positive$$v_2$$ for non-prompt$${{\textrm{D}}^{0}}$$ mesons with a significance of 2.7$$\sigma $$ . The non-prompt$${{\textrm{D}}^{0}}$$ -meson$$v_2$$ is lower than that of prompt non-strange D mesons with 3.2$$\sigma $$ significance in$$2< p_\textrm{T} < 8~\textrm{GeV}/c$$ , and compatible with the$$v_2$$ of beauty-decay electrons. Theoretical calculations of beauty-quark transport in a hydrodynamically expanding medium describe the measurement within uncertainties.

Alexeev, G D; Alexeev, M G; Alice, C; Amoroso, A; Andrieux, V; Anosov, V; Augsten, K; Augustyniak, W; Azevedo, C_D R; Badelek, B; et al (, The European Physical Journal C)Abstract We report on a measurement of Spin Density Matrix Elements (SDMEs) in hard exclusive$$\rho ^0$$ meson muoproduction at COMPASS using 160 GeV/cpolarised$$ \mu ^{+}$$ and$$ \mu ^{-}$$ beams impinging on a liquid hydrogen target. The measurement covers the kinematic range 5.0 GeV/$$c^2$$ $$< W<$$ 17.0 GeV/$$c^2$$ , 1.0 (GeV/c)$$^2$$ $$< Q^2<$$ 10.0 (GeV/c)$$^2$$ and 0.01 (GeV/c)$$^2$$ $$< p_{\textrm{T}}^2<$$ 0.5 (GeV/c)$$^2$$ . Here,Wdenotes the mass of the final hadronic system,$$Q^2$$ the virtuality of the exchanged photon, and$$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ the transverse momentum of the$$\rho ^0$$ meson with respect to the virtual-photon direction. The measured non-zero SDMEs for the transitions of transversely polarised virtual photons to longitudinally polarised vector mesons ($$\gamma ^*_T \rightarrow V^{ }_L$$ ) indicate a violation ofs-channel helicity conservation. Additionally, we observe a dominant contribution of natural-parity-exchange transitions and a very small contribution of unnatural-parity-exchange transitions, which is compatible with zero within experimental uncertainties. The results provide important input for modelling Generalised Parton Distributions (GPDs). In particular, they may allow one to evaluate in a model-dependent way the role of parton helicity-flip GPDs in exclusive$$\rho ^0$$ production.more » « less

We consider a class of two-parameter function spaces which are completions of the linear span$$\mathcal {V}(\delta ^2)$$ of$$h_I\otimes h_J$$ ,$$I,J\in \mathcal {D}$$ . This class contains all the spaces of the formX(Y), whereXandYare either the Lebesgue spaces$$L^p[0,1]$$ or the Hardy spaces$$H^p[0,1]$$ ,$$1\le p < \infty $$ . We say that$$D:X(Y)\rightarrow X(Y)$$ is a Haar multiplier if$$D(h_I\otimes h_J) = d_{I,J} h_I\otimes h_J$$ , where$$d_{I,J}\in \mathbb {R}$$ , and ask which more elementary operators factor throughD. A decisive role is played by theCapon projection$$\mathcal {C}:\mathcal {V}(\delta ^2)\rightarrow \mathcal {V}(\delta ^2)$$ given by$$\mathcal {C} h_I\otimes h_J = h_I\otimes h_J$$ if$$|I|\le |J|$$ , and$$\mathcal {C} h_I\otimes h_J = 0$$ if$$|I| > |J|$$ , as our main result highlights: Given any bounded Haar multiplier$$D:X(Y)\rightarrow X(Y)$$ , there exist$$\lambda ,\mu \in \mathbb {R}$$ such that$$\begin{aligned} \lambda \mathcal {C} + \mu ({{\,\textrm{Id}\,}}-\mathcal {C})\text { approximately 1-projectionally factors through }D, \end{aligned}$$ i.e., for all$$\eta > 0$$ , there exist bounded operatorsA, Bso thatABis the identity operator$${{\,\textrm{Id}\,}}$$ ,$$\Vert A\Vert \cdot \Vert B\Vert = 1$$ and$$\Vert \lambda \mathcal {C} + \mu ({{\,\textrm{Id}\,}}-\mathcal {C}) - ADB\Vert < \eta $$ . U.; Ahuja, I.; et al (, The European Physical Journal C)Abstract The azimuthal ($$\Delta \varphi $$ ) correlation distributions between heavy-flavor decay electrons and associated charged particles are measured in pp and p–Pb collisions at$$\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{{NN}}}} = 5.02$$ TeV. Results are reported for electrons with transverse momentum$$4<16$$ $$\textrm{GeV}/c$$ and pseudorapidity$$|\eta |<0.6$$ . The associated charged particles are selected with transverse momentum$$1<7$$ $$\textrm{GeV}/c$$ , and relative pseudorapidity separation with the leading electron$$|\Delta \eta | < 1$$ . The correlation measurements are performed to study and characterize the fragmentation and hadronization of heavy quarks. The correlation structures are fitted with a constant and two von Mises functions to obtain the baseline and the near- and away-side peaks, respectively. The results from p–Pb collisions are compared with those from pp collisions to study the effects of cold nuclear matter. In the measured trigger electron and associated particle kinematic regions, the two collision systems give consistent results. The$$\Delta \varphi $$ distribution and the peak observables in pp and p–Pb collisions are compared with calculations from various Monte Carlo event generators.more » « less

The search is based on a dataset ofppcollisions at$$\sqrt{s}=13~\text {TeV} $$ recorded with the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb$$^{-1}$$ . Four signal regions, with the requirement of at least three light leptons (electron or muon) and at least two jets out of which at least one jet is identified as coming from ab-hadron, are considered based on the number of leptons of a given flavour. The main background processes are estimated using dedicated control regions in a simultaneous fit with the signal regions to data. No excess above the Standard Model background prediction is observed and 95% confidence level limits on the production cross section times branching ratio are derived as a function of the leptoquark mass. Under the assumption of exclusive decays into$$te^{-}$$ ($$t\mu ^{-}$$ ), the corresponding lower limit on the scalar mixed-generation leptoquark mass$$m_{\textrm{LQ}_{\textrm{mix}}^{\textrm{d}}}$$ is at 1.58 (1.59) TeV and on the vector leptoquark mass$$m_{{\tilde{U}}_1}$$ at 1.67 (1.67) TeV in the minimal coupling scenario and at 1.95 (1.95) TeV in the Yang–Mills scenario.more » « less

The$${\textrm{D}}^{0}$$D0mesons were reconstructed at midrapidity$$(|y|<0.8)$$(|y|<0.8)from their hadronic decay$$\mathrm {D^0 \rightarrow K^-\uppi ^+}$$D0→K-π+, in the transverse momentum interval$$2< p_{\textrm{T}} < 12$$2<pT<12 GeV/c. The result indicates a positive$$v_2$$v2for non-prompt$${{\textrm{D}}^{0}}$$D0mesons with a significance of 2.7$$\sigma $$σ. The non-prompt$${{\textrm{D}}^{0}}$$D0-meson$$v_2$$v2is lower than that of prompt non-strange D mesons with 3.2$$\sigma $$σsignificance in$$2< p_\textrm{T} < 8~\textrm{GeV}/c$$2<pT<8GeV/c, and compatible with the$$v_2$$v2of beauty-decay electrons.
